Photo: Benoit Pavan \/ Hans Lucas via Reuters Connect<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Jewish community in France has lambasted a European Union lawmaker for arguing that French-Palestinians must be able to join the \u201cPalestinian armed resistance\u201d if their French-Israeli counterparts are allowed to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/12\/19\/south-africa-threatens-prosecute-denaturalize-citizens-who-serve-idf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">serve in the Israel Defense Forces<\/a>\u00a0(IDF).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rima Hassan, a 32-year-old lawyer and activist, earlier this year became the first French-Palestinian member of the European Parliament, the EU\u2019s law-making body. On Wednesday, she posted on the social media platform X that the legacy of colonialism would be the only reason to oppose the idea that Palestinians in France should be allowed to join the so-called \u201cresistance\u201d currently fighting Israel in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIf Franco-Israelis are allowed to serve in the Israeli army while enjoying the benefits of dual nationality, any Franco-Palestinian must be able to join the Palestinian armed resistance whose legitimacy is recognized by the United Nations resolutions relating to the right to self-determination of peoples. The only thing that prevents you from considering it is the coloniality of the world,\u201d wrote Hassan, a member of the European Parliament\u2019s Foreign Affairs Committee and coordinator of the Human Rights Subcommittee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Critics were quick to note that several groups describing themselves as part of the pro-Palestinian \u201cresistance\u201d against Israel are designated internationally \u2014 including by the EU itself \u2014 as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/06\/19\/hamas-official-says-terror-group-would-do-oct-7-attack-again-possible-go-back-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">terrorist organizations<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF), the main representative body of French Jews, made this point on Thursday while lambasting Hassan\u2019s argument.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe organizations that claim to be part of the Palestinian \u2018armed resistance\u2019 \u2014 Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, etc. \u2014 are all recognized as terrorists by the European Union,\u201d CRIF posted on X. \u201cCan you imagine a European MP calling for people to join Al Qaeda or Daesh [ISIS]? If Rima Hassan wanted peace and truly defended the Palestinians, she would fight Hamas instead of defending it without taking responsibility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hassan, who was born in Syria to an Arab family that previously fled Israel during its war of independence in 1948, has falsely accused the Jewish state of \u201cgenocide\u201d in Gaza. She has also reportedly accused Israel of being a \u201cnameless monstrosity\u201d and a \u201cfascist colonial entity\u201d which \u201clies every day,\u201d and has described her keffiyeh as \u201cmy superhero cape.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The EU lawmaker\u2019s political party, the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI \u2014 \u201cFrance Unbowed\u201d), is the largest member of the New Popular Front (NFP), an anti-Israel leftist coalition of political parties that came to power in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/07\/08\/french-jews-sound-alarm-following-far-left-surge-elections-france-israel-relations-expected-plummet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">France\u2019s snap parliamentary elections<\/a>\u00a0in July. The coalition gained the most seats of any political bloc but not enough for a majority. Its leader,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/09\/24\/french-far-left-leader-long-accused-antisemitism-backs-hezbollah-resistance-israels-invading-army\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean-Luc Melenchon<\/a>, has been lambasted by French Jews as a threat to their community as well as those who support Israel. He previously suggested that Jews killed Jesus, echoing a false claim that was used to justify antisemitic violence and discrimination throughout the Middle Ages in Europe<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt seems France has no future for Jews,\u201d Rabbi Moshe Sebbag of Paris\u2019 Grand Synagogue told the\u00a0<em>Times of Israel<\/em>\u00a0following the ascension of the NFP in July\u2019s elections. \u201cWe fear for the future of our children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shortly after the NFP\u2019s victory, Melenchon \u2014 who in a 2017 speech referred to the French Jewish community as \u201can arrogant minority that lectures to the rest\u201d \u2014 called for France to recognize a Palestinian state. Supporters of the hard-left coalition, which includes socialist and communist parties, poured into the streets of Paris waving Palestinian flags. French flags were largely absent from the celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the wake of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas\u2019s invasion of and massacre across southern Israel last Oct. 7, Melenchon and his party\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/10\/09\/you-disgust-me-main-french-far-left-party-excoriated-for-response-to-hamas-invasion-of-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">issued a statement<\/a>\u00a0declaring the attacks \u201can armed offensive of Palestinian forces\u201d as a result of continued Israeli \u201coccupation.\u201d Melenchon also failed to condemn a deputy who\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SudRadio\/status\/1714172342421602780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a>\u00a0Hamas a \u201cresistance movement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last month, CRIF released a survey of the French public that found that 55 percent of LFI supporters\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/22\/half-french-people-adhere-over-6-antisemitic-prejudices-12-happy-see-jews-leave-country-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adhere to at least six antisemitic prejudices<\/a>\u00a0and that a third of LFI supporters indicated they adhere to at least nine such bigoted beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">By comparison, nearly half (46 percent) of French people overall said they adhere to more than six anti-Jewish prejudices, and 52 percent of those who support the far-right Rassemblement National (RN \u2014 \u201cNational Rally\u201d) said the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The survey also found that 20 percent of LFI supporters consider the departure of Jews from France desirable, compared to 15 percent of those who back RN and 12 percent of France\u2019s general population (up from just 6 percent in 2020). The number increases among people under the age of 35, of whom a striking 17 percent think that the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/11\/f-k-israel-monument-france-honoring-nazi-victims-defaced-antisemitic-graffiti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">departure of Jews from France<\/a>\u00a0would be good for the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Similarly troubling, the results showed that 25 percent of LFI supporters have \u201csympathy\u201d for Hamas, and 40 percent refuse to label the Palestinian Islamist group as a terrorist organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The survey noted that one in two French people now suspect their Jewish fellow citizens of \u201cdouble allegiance\u201d to Israel \u2014 a reality that CRIF president Yonathan Arfi blamed in part on LFI\u2019s fierce anti-Israel opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cLFI has given antisemitism a political endorsement,\u201d he told\u00a0<em>Le Point<\/em>. \u201cWe observe this toxic porosity between criticism of Israel and the ostracization of French Jews. The Palestinian cause becomes a license to hate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As for people aged 18 to 24, only 53 percent think that the majority of Jews are well integrated into the population, compared to 84 percent of French people more broadly, the survey found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Meanwhile, almost a quarter of those surveyed think that Jews are not really French like the rest of their countrymen, an uptick of more than six points. The findings also showed that, among the French people surveyed, 64 percent believe that Jews have reason to be afraid of living in France, and 70 percent believe that the country has experienced an increase in antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The survey results came as France has experienced a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/11\/29\/antisemitic-discrimination-painful-daily-reality-jews-france-newspaper-investigation-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">record surge of antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0in the wake of Hamas\u2019s atrocities last Oct. 7, amid the ensuing war in Gaza. Antisemitic outrages\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/03\/06\/french-cops-arrest-assailant-who-beat-abused-jewish-man-he-left-paris-synagogue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rose by over 1,000 percent<\/a>\u00a0in the final three months of 2023 compared with the previous year, with over 1,200 incidents reported \u2014 greater than the total number of incidents in France for the previous three years combined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This year, anti-Jewish hate crimes and demonstrations in France have continued to skyrocket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In August, then-French Interior Minister G\u00e9rald Darmanin warned that incidents targeting the country\u2019s Jewish community\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/08\/26\/antisemitic-incidents-france-up-200-this-year-interior-minister-warns-attempted-synagogue-arson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spiked by about 200 percent<\/a>\u00a0since Jan. 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cTwo-thirds of anti-religious acts \u2026 are against Jews,\u201d he added, according to French broadcaster BFM TV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Darmanin appeared to call out the hard left for fostering a hostile environment for Jews during his remarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThere is hateful political speech against the Jews of France and it must be denounced,\u201d he said, according to France Info. \u201cWe can clearly see that part of the left, unfortunately, is making this speech of encouragement of hatred toward our Jewish compatriots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Darmanin\u2019s comments followed him stating weeks earlier that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/08\/12\/antisemitic-incidents-france-have-tripled-since-last-fall-interior-minister-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">antisemitic acts in France have tripled<\/a>\u00a0over the last year. In the first half of 2024, 887 such incidents were recorded, almost triple the 304 recorded in the same period last year, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The now-former interior minister also called out Melenchon during his remarks, asking, \u201cHow can politicians think antisemitism is residual?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Darmanin was referring to a blog post published in June in which Melenchon wrote that antisemitism in France was \u201cresidual\u201d and \u201cabsent\u201d from anti-Israel rallies.
