Photo: Screenshot<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ireland\u2019s most senior Catholic figure has lambasted Israel\u2019s military campaign in Gaza as \u201cmerciless\u201d and a \u201cdisproportionate\u201d response to the Palestinian terror group Hamas\u2019s invasion of the Jewish state last Oct. 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The New Year\u2019s message by Archbishop Eamon Martin came amid&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/16\/israel-says-ireland-crossed-all-red-lines-icj-genocide-case-closing-dublin-embassy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deteriorating relations between Israel and Ireland<\/a>, the latter of which has been accused of normalizing antisemitism in daily life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn the past 15 months, for example, we have witnessed not only the egregious 7th October 2023 terror attacks by Hamas and Islamic Jihad on Israel, including the taking of hostages \u2014 100 of whom are still held captive in Gaza \u2014 but we have also seen a merciless and disproportionate response by Israel,\u201d Martin said in his remarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Martin \u2014 the Archbishop of Armagh who has been Primate of All Ireland since 2014 \u2014 then cited casualty figures provided by Gaza\u2019s Hamas-run Health Ministry, which according to recent analyses have been&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/16\/gaza-death-toll-figures-inflated-bolster-genocide-claims-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inflated to defame Israel<\/a>&nbsp;and support claims of genocide, to support his argument.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cInternational humanitarian law says that parties to a conflict cannot use disproportionate measures to achieve military objectives. The near-complete destruction of Gaza, and the bringing of its population to the brink of famine is, by any standard, a disproportionate measure,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI am conscious that people who have expressed similar views to these have been accused of antisemitism. I wish to put it on record, once again, that I abhor the violations by Hamas and other Islamist militant groups against the people of Israel, and that I fully support the right of Israelis to live in peace and security,\u201d Martin added. \u201cThis right has to be achieved in the context of a just peace, where the legitimate rights of Palestinians are also protected in line with international law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Martin was not the first prominent Irish cleric to use his platform to target Israel in recent days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In November, Reverend Canon David Oxley came under fire for&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/29\/preacher-slammed-appalling-remarks-irish-memorial-accusing-israel-viewing-itself-master-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">delivering an antisemitic memorial sermon<\/a>&nbsp;in which he suggested that Israelis and Jews see themselves as a \u201cmaster race\u201d that justifies \u201celiminating\u201d other groups \u201cbecause they don\u2019t count.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Oxley delivered the sermon at St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral in Dublin during a Remembrance Sunday service attended by Irish President Michael Higgins and other high-ranking dignitaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During his remarks, the preacher contended that Israel\u2019s war against Hamas in Gaza represented \u201cthe horrible blasphemy of the master race in action.\u201d Oxley\u2019s comments sparked strong condemnation from both Israeli officials and Jewish leaders in Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ireland\u2019s Chief Rabbi Yoni Wieder condemned the Anglican establishment for allowing such remarks and the Church of Ireland for not distancing itself from Oxley\u2019s comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Beyond the religious sphere, Ireland has been among Europe\u2019s fiercest critics of Israel since Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 invasion of and massacre across southern Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Amid the onslaught of criticism, Israel last month shuttered its embassy in Dublin, with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar explaining the key reason was Ireland\u2019s decision to join&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/12\/hamas-applauds-irelands-decision-join-south-africa-genocide-case-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Africa\u2019s genocide case against Israel<\/a>&nbsp;at the International Court of Justice and its support for redefining genocide in order to secure a conviction against the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jerusalem accused the Irish government of undermining Israel at international forums and promoting \u201cextreme anti-Israel policies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ireland has \u201ccrossed all the red lines,\u201d Sa\u2019ar told reporters at the time, calling the Irish government\u2019s actions \u201cunilateral hostility and persecution\u201d rather than mere criticism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The announcement came after Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris condemned Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza, accusing the country of \u201cthe starvation of children\u201d and \u201cthe killing of civilians\u201d \u2014&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/16\/israel-says-ireland-crossed-all-red-lines-icj-genocide-case-closing-dublin-embassy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remarks that Sa\u2019ar slammed as \u201cantisemitic\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;and historically insensitive. Sa\u2019ar also noted how \u201cwhen Jewish children died of starvation in the Holocaust, Ireland was at best neutral in the war against Nazi Germany.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In November, the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/07\/irish-parliament-passes-motion-accusing-israel-genocide-gaza-dublins-hostility-jewish-state-mounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Irish parliament passed a non-binding motion<\/a>&nbsp;saying that \u201cgenocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In May,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/28\/spain-norway-ireland-officially-recognize-palestinian-state-denmarks-parliament-rejects-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ireland officially recognized a Palestinian state<\/a>, prompting outrage in Israel, which described the move as a \u201creward for terrorism.\u201d Israel\u2019s Ambassador in Dublin Dana Erlich said at the time of Ireland\u2019s recognition of \u201cPalestine\u201d that Ireland was \u201cnot an honest broker\u201d in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">More recently, Harris in October called on the European Union to \u201creview its trade relations\u201d with Israel after the Israeli parliament passed legislation&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/10\/29\/israelis-defend-unrwa-ban-amid-us-rebuke-say-school-kids-better-off-without-agencys-poisonous-influence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">banning the activities in the country of UNRWA<\/a>, the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, because of its ties to Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Recent anti-Israel actions in Ireland came shortly after the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (Impact-se), an Israeli education watchdog group, released a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/05\/irish-school-textbooks-disparage-judaism-defame-israel-watchdog-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new report revealing Irish school textbooks<\/a>&nbsp;have been filled with negative stereotypes and distortions of Israel, Judaism, and Jewish history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Antisemitism in Ireland has become \u201cblatant and obvious\u201d in the wake of Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 onslaught, according to Alan Shatter, a former member of parliament who served in the Irish cabinet between 2011 and 2014 as Minister for Justice, Equality and Defense.
