Each war is accompanied by songs\u2014period hits written in real time, folk or pop songs that capture the zeitgeist and the ethos of a particular war. If they are eventually admitted into the cultural canon, they will forever remind us of that war\u2014like Naomi Shemer\u2019s \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/___https:\/www.tabletmag.com\/podcasts\/israel-story\/israel-story-mixtape-2-jerusalem-of-gold___.YXAzOnRhYmxldDphOm86YTkxOTg2NzY1NTY2MTExNDk4MGRmM2ExZDA3MDNiYTI6NjpmODc0OmM1MjA3ZWViY2U5ODlmYzdiNTJjZDM1ODRmNzE1MTVhZWUzZmE2OGFhZDQ2MTVkYTEyMmNlODY3OTA1Y2NjY2M6cDpUOk4\">Yerushalayim Shel Zahav<\/a>,\u201d for example, which will always be connected in our minds to the Six-Day War. Whether they\u2019re pro-war, anti-war, memorial songs, or descriptions of life during wartime or on the battlefield, war songs are an integral part of Israel\u2019s music, in every genre of popular music.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Oct. 7 war, of course, is no different. YouTube is filled with playlists dedicated to it: songs about lives lost, fighting songs, songs longing for the hostages\u2019 return. Over a year has passed since its beginning, and the songs just keep piling up. Here are 10 examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>EZ, \u2018October 7\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u05d0\u05d9\u05d6\u05d9 - \u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d1\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05d0\u05d5\u05e7\u05d8\u05d5\u05d1\u05e8 (prod. by joseph)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GAdS-TWD53Y\" width=\"680\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This shocking song was written less than 24 hours after the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, 2023, and released just days later on Oct. 11. Rapper EZ (Erez Sharon) states in the intro: \u201cWhen I don\u2019t know what to say, I just open a microphone and pour out everything that\u2019s inside me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The lyrics are angry and ooze with vengeance. \u201cMy Jewish blood is burning,\u201d EZ freestyles, speaking against those who criticize during wartime, telling the radical left, BDS, and the organization Breaking the Silence: \u201cnot now, not a word, shut up and let the IDF win.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The main sentiment here is \u201clet\u2019s go get \u2019em\u201d and \u201cno more mister nice guy,\u201d as he raps: \u201cI want to raise this glass to the soldiers of the IDF. No more \u2018the most moral army in the world.\u2019 Moral my ass. Moral soldiers come back in a coffin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ness ve Stilla, \u2018Charbu Darbu\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u05e0\u05e1 X \u05e1\u05d8\u05d9\u05dc\u05d4 - \u05d7\u05e8\u05d1\u05d5 \u05d3\u05e8\u05d1\u05d5 (Prod. Hip-hop war anthem\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/___https:\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/community\/articles\/life-during-wartime-tel-aviv___.YXAzOnRhYmxldDphOm86Y2Y5YmI4MTc2MmE4Yzc4M2QxMjgyODBkODcyYjRlMTU6NjpiNzRlOmU5ZDU4NzRiY2VhMWZkOGNlNmNiNzMyYzg2OGRiYmY4OWE2NmQ3NmVmYTAzMGJlNWQ2NGIwNjQ2ZTU2MmZhMjI6cDpUOk4\">\u201cCharbu Darbu\u201d<\/a> cheered on the IDF on its mission to obliterate Hamas. This aggressive and vitriolic cry for vengeance, including threats peppered with violent slang like \u201cGet your asses ready for the Israeli Air Force,\u201d placed over an extremely catchy beat, dominated the charts and the airwaves for months in the early stages of this war.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For its many fans, the song was an energy boost. The name \u201cWallak Mi\u201d is much too slang to attempt an accurate translation. It basically means \u201cno one is as ____ as you,\u201d alluding to any empowering compliment, such as strong, great, brave, capable, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The song was written by songwriter Avi Ohayon when his son enlisted in a combat unit, more than a year before the war started. But it was released after the war started, by Lior Narkis\u2014one of Mizrahi-pop\u2019s biggest stars\u2014and became the definitive pep song for Israeli fighters.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Omer Adam and Infected Mushroom, \u2018Tirkod LaNetsach\u2019 (\u2018Dance Forever\u2019)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Omer Adam &amp; Infected Mushroom  - \u05ea\u05e8\u05e7\u05d5\u05d3 \u05dc\u05e0\u05e6\u05d7 (Prod. The worst civilian massacre in the history of Israel happened at a trance music festival\u2014a giant rave in the Negev desert, near Kibbutz Re\u2019im; 384 people were murdered there and dozens were taken hostage. For weeks and months afterward, we saw heartbreaking images of beautiful youngsters, who lost their lives while all they wanted was to dance.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Naturally, Israel\u2019s trance music scene responded with tribute tracks. One of them is this collaboration between the internationally successful psychedelic trance duo Infected Mushroom and Israeli pop star Omer Adam, who provided the heartbreaking vocals. The song, which was dedicated to all the victims at the Nova festival and their families, was written by ShrekDiMC and essentially is a love song to a girl murdered at the Nova festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Miri Mesika, \u2018Mapal\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u05de\u05d9\u05e8\u05d9 \u05de\u05e1\u05d9\u05e7\u05d4 - \u05de\u05e4\u05dc - Miri Mesika - Mapal\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V5n_IF-sFjs\" width=\"680\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since Oct. 7, Israeli airwaves have been filled with tragic memorial songs: some general, others commemorating someone specific. One of these innumerable songs is \u201cMapal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Mapal<\/em>\u00a0means waterfall, and it was also the name of one of the young women murdered at the Nova festival. Mapal Adam, who was 27, was the little sister of TV host Maayan Adam, who wrote these lyrics about her sister\u2019s murder. Alex Dancyg was a Polish-born Israeli scholar and historian of the Holocaust. Dancyg was a member of Kibbutz Nir Oz and was kidnapped by Hamas during the massacre and murdered in captivity at the age of 76.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">His 18-year-old granddaughter, Talya Danzig, is one of the brightest talents to emerge from this tragedy, moving and unique. Here you can watch her, accompanied by the Music People, playing at the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/___https:\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL3qfm4rArt5BFo6BhnHRqbYahU5_lV9gj___.YXAzOnRhYmxldDphOm86Y2Y5YmI4MTc2MmE4Yzc4M2QxMjgyODBkODcyYjRlMTU6NjowZDkzOmQyYjNiNDBlZjdkZWFhOGM5ZjVhNGY3ZGVkNWM4YzU5NDI2NzQzZjA2MjMxYjY2OTg1ZmZkNzZlYWM5MThiYzQ6cDpUOk4\">\u201cAquarium October 7 special.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u201cAquarium\u201d is something like the Israeli version of NPR Music\u2019s \u201cTiny Desk Concerts,\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em>and Danzig\u2019s performance opens with a story she tells about a sack of peanuts she received from her grandfather\u2019s field, and continues with one of her songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Eden Golan, \u2018Hurricane\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eden Golan - Hurricane Israel\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lJYn09tuPw4\" width=\"680\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel\u2019s entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, was also inspired by Oct. 7, which caused much controversy. Pop ballad \u201cHurricane\u201d\u2014performed by singer Eden Golan, written by Avi Ohayon, Keren Peles, and Stav Beger\u2014was called \u201cOctober Rain\u201d at first. It was viewed as political propaganda in support of Israel in the war, and thus disqualified by the European Broadcasting Union, the organization in charge of the Eurovision Song Contest.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After several rewrites and a name change, all of which hid the message and the true meaning of the song, it was accepted. Even so, many feared that there would be violent attempts or unpleasant incidents against Golan at the contest itself, which led to additional security measures being added. In the end, everything went smoothly, Golan\u2019s performance was praised, and the song came in fifth.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Shem Tov Levi, \u2018Shuvi LeBeitech\u2019 (\u2018Return to Your Home\u2019)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u05e9\u05dd-\u05d8\u05d5\u05d1 \u05dc\u05d5\u05d9 - \u05e9\u05d5\u05d1\u05d9 \u05dc\u05d1\u05d9\u05ea\u05da\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e0EIvVlg1s8\" width=\"680\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since Oct. 7, Israel has been producing new songs but also listening to old ones that unfortunately receive this new and horrible context. Such is \u201cShuvi LeBeitech\u201d (\u201cReturn to Your Home\u201d) by Dahlia Ravikovitch\u2014one of the most important female poets in the history of Hebrew literature\u2014and musician Shem Tov Levi.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shem Tov Levi composed this tune in the early 1970s, and together with Ravikovitch\u2019s lyrics, released it on his second solo album in 1981. There is a famous\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/___https:\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VzDTlN3-72w___.YXAzOnRhYmxldDphOm86Y2Y5YmI4MTc2MmE4Yzc4M2QxMjgyODBkODcyYjRlMTU6NjpkMWFmOjQyM2IzOTg4ZmQxOTBmZmRmODA0ZGM2Y2NmMTM5NWQzY2NkZmNlYmVmZWMzMjEwYmQ1ODI2N2I2ZWRlYzY4M2M6cDpUOk4\">Chava Alberstein rendition<\/a> of this dark and somber song, as well as many other cover versions\u2014old and new.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The lyrics address a young girl, a \u201cwounded bird,\u201d and expresses deep longing for her return home.
