Photo: REUTERS\/Amir Cohen<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The \u201ccold\u201d temperatures in Gaza have been a staple of&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;and other news coverage \u2014 and of anti-Israel activism in the US \u2014 in recent weeks. But just how cold is it, actually, in Gaza?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/30\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-baby-deaths-cold.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">At Least 5 Babies Are Dead From Cold as Winter Grips Gaza<\/a>,\u201d was a Dec. 31, 2024 headline in the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>. \u201cDead From Cold\u201d was something of a euphemism, as the real baby-killers, the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;made clear with echoes of classical libels against Jews, were the \u201cIsraeli military\u2019s bombardment and attacks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Toward the end of the article came a mention of \u201cmore heavy rain expected in the coming days, and lows in the mid-40s Fahrenheit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;doubled down on this with a follow-up piece in its Jan. 2, 2024 edition headlined, \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/01\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-strike.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No Respite for Gazans as the War Grinds On<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOver the past few days, Gazans have endured chilly winter rainstorms; Gazan officials say some infants have died from the cold,\u201d the article said, with no mention of any temperature readings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Such claims were widespread. \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/babies-dying-gaza-cold-hypothermia-rcna185521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Born at war, dying in the cold<\/a>,\u201d was an NBC News headline. \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2025\/01\/06\/gaza-babies-winter-deaths-isarel-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Babies are dying in the cold<\/a>,\u201d said a&nbsp;<em>Washington Post<\/em>&nbsp;article published on Jan. 6, about \u201cat least seven infants in Gaza who have died in the cold in recent weeks, according to relatives, doctors, and the enclave\u2019s Health Ministry.\u201d The&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>, too, made clear who the real baby-killers were \u2014 the Jews \u2014 referring to \u201congoing Israeli restrictions on aid convoys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">So, how cold has it been in Gaza?&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/weather\/palestine\/gaza\/historic?month=12&amp;year=2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to<\/a>&nbsp;<a class=\"vglnk\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/timeanddate.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">TimeAndDate.com<\/a>, which seems reasonably reliable, the coldest it got in Gaza City for the entire month of December 2024 was 45 degrees Fahrenheit. On Dec. 25 the temperature hit 70 degrees. According to Google, the weather in Rafah, Gaza on Jan. 7, 2025 was sunny with a high of 69, a low of 51, and zero precipitation. Not exactly the Yukon permafrost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Any infant\u2019s death is tragic. It is indeed possible to die of hypothermia in wet conditions in the 40s, especially without adequate shelter and clothing. Yet it\u2019s also possible to survive in even lower temperatures, even without a fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">You wouldn\u2019t know it from the press coverage, but infants also do die for reasons other than cold or Israeli bombardment. In New York City in 2021,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/vs\/2021sum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">400 infants died before their first birthday<\/a>, for causes including respiratory distress, infections, cardiovascular disorders, sudden infant death syndrome, and congenital malformations.&nbsp; The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;has paid those New York City deaths less attention than the ones in Gaza, perhaps because they don\u2019t provide as ready an opportunity to vilify the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The \u201cGazan officials\u201d the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;mentions are part of a Hamas power structure dedicated to defaming Israel. Those officials use information as warfare against the Jewish state they are dedicated to destroy. The Gaza doctors are largely the same. Any claims coming out of Gaza deserve to be treated with a substantial dose of skepticism. They often reflect not so much the reality on the ground but the propaganda agenda of what remains of the Hamas terror organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Time and time again, the most extreme claims coming out of Gaza have proven false. There was the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/10\/23\/new-york-times-editors-note-gaza-hospital-coverage-phony-as-hamas-health-ministry-death-count\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claim that Israel had bombed a hospital<\/a>. The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;published an editors\u2019 note after it had accompanied the original claim with a photograph of a different demolished building, and after it turned out that the damage to the hospital site was caused by a misfired Palestinian rocket meant for the Jewish state, not an Israeli air strike targeting terrorists in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">There was also the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;claim that&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/03\/14\/what-new-york-times-left-out-its-starving-gaza-children-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Israel was starving Gazan children to death<\/a>, which left out the UN statistics showing Gazans about as well fed as children in India, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Now the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;and the rest of the media crowd are claiming that Gazan children are freezing to death in a place that enjoys 70-degree sunshine during the day and 40-50 degree lows at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For sure, I\u2019d rather be here in the US than there in Gaza. I don\u2019t doubt that some young Gazan children are genuinely miserable. There are also Israelis who are miserable because they are in bomb shelters hiding from Iranian-supplied rockets and missiles, and because their family members are kidnapped or serving on reserve duty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The best way to improve the lot of innocent Gazans would be for Hamas and Islamic Jihad to immediately put down their arms, surrender, and release to freedom the hostages who were kidnapped on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The coldest things of all in Gaza are the hearts of the Hamas terrorists. That is a fact that the international press, in its newfound fascination with the not-actually-that-frosty Gaza weather, seems intimidated by, and also a fact that the press is all too frequently unwilling to share directly with readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><i><strong>Ira Stoll<\/strong> was managing editor of&nbsp;<\/i>The Forward<i>&nbsp;and North American editor of&nbsp;<\/i>The Jerusalem Post<i>.
