Photo: Miraflores Palace\/Handout via REUTERS<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran has congratulated\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/10\/argentine-jews-express-outrage-venezuelas-maduro-blasts-argentina-government-nazi-zionist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicol\u00e1s Maduro for beginning his third term<\/a>\u00a0as Venezuela\u2019s president, despite international outcry over what many leaders have described as an \u201cillegitimate\u201d presidency only won through a \u201cdesperate attempt\u201d to seize power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Iranian government sent its best wishes to Maduro and vowed to strengthen ties with Venezuela, describing their bilateral relationship as a way to stand up to the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cCongratulations to President #NicolasMaduro on his inauguration into office as President of the Bolivarian Republic of #Venezuela,\u201d Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman\u00a0Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on X\/Twitter on Saturday. \u201cWe wish him all the success in serving his great people &amp; country and are looking forward to working with the elected government for the good of our nations in furtherance of Iran-Venezuela\u2019s extensive bilateral ties.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118567 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Iran-239x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"70%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Iran-239x300.png 239w, https:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Iran.png 611w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Baghaei then said that Iran will stand by Venezuela in opposition to the US government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIran stands in solidarity with Venezuelan people and government in the face of malign interventions and unilateral coercive measures led by the United States,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Maduro on Friday began his third term as Venezuela\u2019s president, despite\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/06\/blinken-calls-final-gaza-truce-push-before-biden-leaves-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US Secretary of State Antony Blinken<\/a>\u00a0referring to his \u201cillegitimate presidential inauguration in Venezuela\u201d as a \u201cdesperate attempt\u201d to seize power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe Venezuelan people and world know the truth \u2014 Maduro clearly lost the 2024 presidential election and has no right to claim the presidency,\u201d Blinken said in a statement. \u201cThe United States rejects the National Electoral Council\u2019s fraudulent announcement that Maduro won the presidential election and does not recognize Nicol\u00e1s Maduro as the president of Venezuela.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez Urrutia should have been sworn in as the Venezuelan president, according to the US State Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar agreed, posting on X\/Twitter that the Jewish state \u201cexpresses concern over the political persecution and arbitrary arrests by the regime and joins the call of many in the international community to restore freedom and democracy in Venezuela.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cToday, Jan. 10, Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez Urrutia, the elected president of Venezuela, who won the presidential elections by a significant majority, was supposed to be inaugurated,\u201d Sa\u2019ar added. \u201cHowever, the election results are not being respected, and his inauguration is not taking place. The ruler, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, an ally of Iran, must honor the will of the people in his country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">US President-elect Donald Trump also lambasted Maduro after Venezuelan opposition leader Mar\u00eda Corina Machado \u2014 who emerged from months of hiding last week to join anti-Maduro protesters in the capital city of Caracas and demand that Gonz\u00e1lez be sworn in instead \u2014 was briefly detained by government security forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cVenezuelan democracy activist Maria Corina Machado and President-elect Gonzalez are peacefully expressing the voices and the will of the Venezuelan people with hundreds of thousands of people demonstrating against the regime,\u201d Trump wrote on social media. \u201cThese freedom fighters should not be harmed, and must stay safe and alive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to reports, Machado was forced to record several videos before she was released, although details of those recordings remain unclear and Maduro\u2019s supporters have denied that the opposition leader was arrested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Meanwhile, Iran is also increasing its military presence in Venezuela, with some members of the country\u2019s elite even acquiring properties in the Latin American country and being offered political asylum should they need it,\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latintimes.com\/iran-increases-military-presence-venezuela-drone-factory-maduro-claims-new-term-office-despite-571806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Latin Times reported<\/a><\/em>\u00a0on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran has reportedly established a drone development base at the El Libertador air base in Venezuela, where training for Venezuelan military personnel also takes place in addition to the production and training in the use of a wide range of unnamed aerial vehicles (UAVs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The two countries have also strengthened economic ties in recent years, such as Iran\u2019s Mahan Air making direct flights between Caracas and Tehran. According to\u00a0<em>Infobae<\/em>, a Spanish-language Argentine online newspaper, these flights have been\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/venezuela\/2025\/01\/10\/iran-refuerza-su-presencia-militar-en-venezuela-con-drones-y-cooperacion-estrategica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used to violate international sanctions<\/a>\u00a0by transporting Venezuelan gold in exchange for Iranian oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The US and allied countries have imposed heavy sanctions on both Iran and Venezuela for a range of illicit activities, from human rights violations to supporting terrorist groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In 2021, for example, the US Justice Department announced charges against Iranian intelligence agents\u00a0for\u00a0plotting\u00a0to kidnap an American citizen, journalist Masih Alinejad, in the US and take her by boat to Venezuela before forcibly returning her to Iran, where she was born.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran\u2019s latest expression of support for Venezuela came about two weeks after a senior adviser to the Iranian health minister said that one of Iran\u2019s top foreign policy priorities will be working to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/31\/iran-pushes-expand-ties-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enhance its relationship with Cuba<\/a>\u00a0across several domains and to expand cooperation with Latin American countries more broadly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela have all continued looking for ways to combat US sanctions, which are only expected to become harsher when Trump enters office on Jan. 20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It is unclear if Iran will end up pursuing a relationship with Venezuela to resist US sanctions in a formalized way as it has with Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iranian and Russian leaders have been working on an initiative to form an international alliance against US sanctions known as the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/10\/iran-russia-finalize-establishment-international-union-against-us-sanctions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Union Against US Sanctions<\/a>.
