The investigative news television program \u201c60 Minutes\u201d has been widely criticized for airing a \u201cone-sided\u201d and \u201cbiased\u201d segment on Sunday night that featured former US State Department officials who condemned American support for Israel\u2019s defensive war against Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CBS News show aired a segment titled \u201cDissent Within the State Department Over US Role in Israel-Hamas War.\u201d It highlighted interviews with three former US State Department officials who resigned from their positions in protest of US support for Israel\u2019s ongoing military actions in Gaza, which target Hamas terrorists who orchestrated the deadly terrorist attack in southern Israel that took place on Oct. 7, 2023. One of the former State Department officials told \u201c60 Minutes\u201d: \u201cThere is a linkage between every single bomb that is dropped in Gaza and the US because every single bomb is dropped from an American-made plane.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) called the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d segment \u201cbiased and misguided\u201d in a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0released on Monday. The organization detailed a slew of issues with the segment, including its mention of unverified civilian casualty figures and the fact that it barely mentioned the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Oct. 7 that started the ongoing war in Gaza. The segment even described Hamas fighters as \u201cmilitants\u201d rather than terrorists. AJC also denounced the CBS show for promoting the \u201coutlandish notion\u201d that, after Hamas\u2019s atrocities in southern Israel, the Jewish state should have made efforts to make peace with the Palestinian terrorist group rather than engage in self-defense to rescue the hostages taken to Gaza and target the Hamas terrorists who threatened to\u00a0perpetrate similar deadly massacres<\/a>\u00a0in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis segment, the latest example of major news outlets recklessly reporting on Israel\u2019s defensive war against Hamas, was shockingly one-sided, lacked factual accuracy, and relied heavily on misguided information,\u201d AJC added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn this segment, \u2018<\/em>60 Minutes\u2019 plays directly into the hands of the enemies of the West who aim to show that support for Israel is not in the United States\u2019 best interest. Nothing could be further from the truth,\u201d AJC noted. \u201cIsrael\u2019s actions against Iranian-backed terror groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, as well as its recent direct responses to Iranian attacks, help deter attacks on the US. Each of these terror organizations has American blood on its hands. We share common enemies \u2014 the enemies of democracy and freedom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

AJC CEO Ted Deutch said in a separate\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0on X that the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d segment on Sunday night \u201crelies on the same biased accusations and information that attempt to demonize and delegitimize Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe one-sided segment plays into the hands of enemies of democracy and freedom who aim to divide the US and Israel,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is shocking to see this kind of irresponsible journalism from a long-running, respected news program like \u201960 Minutes.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), said in a\u00a0post<\/a>\u00a0on X he is \u201coutraged\u201d that \u201c60 Minutes\u201d would \u201cair such a biased and one-sided piece, villainizing Israel and berating US support for its ally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhere are the counter perspectives to those interviewed? Where is the mention of the nearly 100 hostages \u2014 including Americans \u2014 STILL in captivity!? What kind of journalism is that?\u201d he wrote. \u201cAccording to last night\u2019s piece, Israel should have responded to the mass slaughter, mutilation, rape, and kidnapping of its citizens by asking the perpetrators of these vicious crimes for peace. Newsflash: Rewarding terrorism won\u2019t bring peace. And this sort of biased coverage only serves to fuel hate. It\u2019s like a blood libel in a moment of expanding, intensifying antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cResponsible coverage of the war should not only honor the lives lost, but also accurately describe those responsible for this conflict for what they are \u2014 antisemitic terrorists,\u201d he concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n

Honest Reporting, a Jerusalem-based media watchdog that focuses on antisemitism and anti-Israel bias, released a detailed\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0on Monday of all the \u201cskewed\u201d and \u201cimbalanced\u201d reporting included in the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d segment. It revealed that the investigative news program amplified anti-Israel voices in the segment on Sunday night while failing to mention that two of its interviewees have \u201ca history of anti-Israel activism and associations with anti-Israel organizations,\u201d including the\u00a0Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)<\/a>\u00a0and Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN). Honest Reporting claimed \u201c60 Minutes\u201d tried to disguise these two former State Department officials \u2014\u00a0Josh Paul<\/a>, a former director in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs; and\u00a0Hala Rharrit<\/a>, a former American diplomat who specialized in the Middle East \u2014 as \u201cimpartial observers,\u201d when in reality they are anti-Israel activists.<\/span><\/p>\n

US Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.)\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0on X that \u201c60 Minutes\u201d aired \u201ca disgraceful hit job against Israel,\u201d and \u201cforgot that Hamas started the war, Hamas still holds American hostages, and any damage in Gaza is the sole fault of Hamas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Others who have condemned the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d segment include Jewish actor Michael Rapaport, who\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0the segment as a \u201csmear campaign\u201d against Israel and the show as a \u201cpropaganda machine.\u201d Dozens on social media have called the segment \u201cdespicable,\u201d labeled it as \u201ca hit piece vilifying Israel,\u201d and accused \u201c60 Minutes\u201d of defending Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n
