Photo Credit: Beyond My Ken\/Wikimedia.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Three years ago, almost to the day, I joined five brave professors at the City University of New York (CUNY) in&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/01\/14\/six-cuny-professors-sue-faculty-union-to-dissociate-over-antisemitic-anti-israel-positions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/01\/14\/six-cuny-professors-sue-faculty-union-to-dissociate-over-antisemitic-anti-israel-positions\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1736915811933000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3ParCpYNBk9NsRKOTAZ5fL\">filing a lawsuit<\/a>&nbsp;against the union that represents us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Why? For starters, as a Zionist Jew, I was appalled when the union\u2019s delegates chanted \u201cZionism out of CUNY!\u201d at an anti-Israel rally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And I was disgusted when the union passed a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/06\/14\/cuny-faculty-union-resolution-accusing-israel-of-massacre-of-palestinians-passes-by-wide-margin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/06\/14\/cuny-faculty-union-resolution-accusing-israel-of-massacre-of-palestinians-passes-by-wide-margin\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1736915811933000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3Q9o2pSb8ldivCUqC_a28v\">resolution<\/a>&nbsp;supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement that called Israel an \u201capartheid\u201d state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">My fellow plaintiffs and I aren\u2019t members of the union, but it imposes its tainted services on us, nonetheless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">New York\u2019s Taylor Law cruelly forces us to accept this hate-infested union\u2019s representation, even while the union\u2019s members and delegates openly chant that they want to expel Zionists from the university.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">That\u2019s right \u2014 this union is supposed to protect our jobs, but it is doing its best to destroy them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The union has just ratified a new contract, which will affect our terms and conditions of employment and the campus environment for Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Despite the findings by multiple investigations \u2014 the US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights, the report by Judge Lippman commissioned by New York\u2019s governor, an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission determination \u2014 of the massive antisemitism problem at CUNY, the union has been silent on the issue, and so is the new contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Does the contract propose reforms that will protect Zionist Jews from the violence and harassment that we have suffered on campus? No it does not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Does it rectify what I see as the expungement of Jews from senior leadership positions at CUNY? Not by my read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Does it demand measures to prevent violent and campus-disrupting anti-Israel encampments? No \u2014 probably because the union defended them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, because the union has pushed us out of its membership by spouting hateful attacks against our religion and heritage, my fellow plaintiffs and hundreds of other Jews have zero influence over the contract\u2019s details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">We\u2019ve been driven out, then denied a vote on an agreement that affects our careers and our safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">So much for democracy and a union\u2019s duty of equal and fair representation of all groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Union officials don\u2019t want Zionist Jews in their membership ranks? Fine. They shouldn\u2019t be speaking or negotiating for us either. We don\u2019t need or want their \u201crepresentation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A similar conflict existed 3,500 years ago in Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A tyrannical Pharaoh abused Jews, treating them like an underclass and exploiting their labor \u2014 until someone stood up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Moses made a famous demand of that unaccountable leader: Let my people go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I say the same to the leaders of the Professional Staff Congress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">They don\u2019t want us, but they are forcing us to labor under the conditions they set. And they have argued that representing every last professor at CUNY is \u201cfundamental to a union\u2019s power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">By their own admission, they are demanding the right to represent Zionist Jews not for our benefit but for theirs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Unfortunately, on Monday, the US Supreme Court denied our appeal to address this ongoing injustice, meaning our antisemitic union will remain free to enhance its own power by mistreating groups it considers to be undesirable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Court has chosen not to intervene, but that doesn\u2019t mean our representatives can\u2019t get involved. It\u2019s happened before. Just ahead of a Supreme Court decision in 2018 that affected public employees\u2019 rights, lawmakers passed a significant change to the Taylor Law. They should do so again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And Congress has a role, too.
