Photo: Courtesy of Bring Them Home Now\/Handout via REUTER<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The exchange, expected to begin on Saturday afternoon, follows the release on the ceasefire\u2019s first day last Sunday of three<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israeli\u00a0<\/span>women and 90 Palestinian prisoners, the first such exchange for more than a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s office confirmed that the list had been received from the mediators. Israel\u2019s response would be presented later, it said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Israeli\u00a0<\/span>media reported that the list of<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0hostage<\/span>s slated for release was not in line with the original agreement, but it was not immediately clear whether this would have any impact on the planned exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Later on Friday, a Hamas official told Reuters<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel\u00a0<\/span>had asked through the mediators that the group replaces one of the soldiers, Albag, with a female civilian, Arbel Yehoud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Asked why the switch had been requested, he replied: \u201cIt is technical and has to do with the situation in the field,\u201d without elaborating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the six-week first phase of the Gaza ceasefire, Israel has agreed to release 50 Palestinian prisoners for every\u00a0<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">female\u00a0<\/span>soldier\u00a0<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">released<\/span>, officials have said. That suggests that 200 Palestinian prisoners would be<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0released\u00a0<\/span>in return for the<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0four<\/span>. The Palestinians slated to be released from Israeli jails were largely detained for involvement in terrorist activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Hamas\u00a0<\/span>prisoners media office said it expected to get the<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0names\u00a0<\/span>of 200 Palestinians to be freed on Saturday in the coming hours. It said the list was expected to include 120 prisoners serving life sentences and 80 prisoners with other lengthy sentences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since the release of the first three women on Sunday and the recovery of the body of an<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israeli\u00a0<\/span>soldier missing for a decade, Israel says 94<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israeli<\/span>s and foreigners remain held in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The ceasefire agreement, worked out after months of on-off negotiations brokered by Qatar and Egypt and backed by the United States, halted the fighting for the first time since a truce that lasted just a week in November 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the first phase,<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Hamas\u00a0<\/span>has agreed to release 33<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0hostage<\/span>s in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held in<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israeli\u00a0<\/span>jails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a subsequent phase, the two sides would negotiate the exchange of the remaining<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0hostage<\/span>s and the withdrawal of<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israeli\u00a0<\/span>forces from Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hamas started the war when it led an invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. During the onslaught, Palestinian terrorists murdered 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 hostages. Israel responded with a military campaign aimed at freeing the hostages and dismantling Hamas\u2019s military and governing capabilities in neighboring Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The release of the first three<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0hostage<\/span>s last week brought an emotional response from<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israeli<\/span>s. But the phased release has drawn protests from some<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israeli<\/span>s who fear the<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0deal\u00a0<\/span>will break down after women, children, elderly, and ill<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0hostage<\/span>s are freed in the first phase, condemning male<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0hostage<\/span>s of military age whose fate is not to be resolved until later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Others, including some in the government, feel the<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0deal\u00a0<\/span>hands a victory to<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Hamas<\/span>, which has reasserted its presence in Gaza despite vows of<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israeli\u00a0<\/span>leaders to destroy it.
