Credit: The White House via Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The new Irish government may scale back an anti-Israel trade policy, while continuing to support international pressure on the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Irish parliament met on Jan. 22 to discuss and approve the \u201cdraft program for government 2025,\u201d which includes a section titled \u201cThe Middle East,\u201d focused solely on Israel and the Palestinians.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">That section states that the government will \u201cprogress legislation prohibiting goods from Occupied Palestinian Territories,\u201d referring to a bill that would ban trade with Israelis in Judea and Samaria.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A recent article in&nbsp;<em>The Irish Mail on Sunday<\/em>&nbsp;stated that the government, despite using the word \u201cprogress,\u201d may not advance the bill at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe bill is now unlikely to ever make the statute books amid deepening fears it will damage Ireland\u2019s corporate and diplomatic relations with the U.S.,\u201d stated the article under the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IrishMailSunday\/status\/1880758388033986989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">headline<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cIsraeli trade ban will be dropped to appease Trump.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Miche\u00e1l Martin, the incoming Irish foreign minister,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/01\/19\/occupied-territories-bill-to-be-replaced-by-new-legislation-tanaiste-confirms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Irish Times<\/em>&nbsp;on Jan. 19 that \u201cvirtually every section\u201d of the existing Occupied Territories Bill will need to be amended.&nbsp;\u201cIt is acknowledged by all sides that the bill was unconstitutional as drafted, and in other areas, it was deficient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In addition to addressing the Israel-Ireland trade policy, the government program states that Ireland will continue to support&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/ireland-files-intervention-in-south-africas-genocide-case-against-israel-at-icj\/\">South Africa<\/a>\u2019s case at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide, and plans to continue a call for a \u201creview\u201d of the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/irish-pm-calls-on-eu-to-review-trade-ties-with-israel\/\">free-trade agreement<\/a>&nbsp;between Israel and the European Union.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It also states that it will \u201cgive effect\u201d to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s working definition of antisemitism and implement the E.U. declaration on \u201cFostering Jewish Life in Europe.\u201d Martin announced last week that the government had adopted both, but received activist pressure against the move. He&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MichealMartinTD\/status\/1879972958392693206\">emphasized<\/a>&nbsp;in a later statement, however, that the decisions are \u201cnon-legally binding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In December, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/saar-orders-closure-of-israels-embassy-in-ireland\/\">ordered<\/a>&nbsp;the closure of Israel\u2019s embassy in Dublin due to \u201cantisemitic actions and rhetoric\u201d consistently undertaken by the Irish government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reunion68.com\/Biuletyn\/img\/break.png\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<h4 class=\"article-headline \" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Protesters dragged out of Irish leader\u2019s Holocaust memorial<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The peaceful, silent protest started after Michael Higgins, who has been accused of antisemitism, mentioned Israel in his speech<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jns.org\/uploads\/2024\/09\/President_Higgins.width-728-1320x880.jpg\" width=\"100%\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Irish President Michael Higgins delivers a speech in Dublin on March 17, 2023. All they did was stand up and turn their back\u201d at Higgins, he tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The speech was ahead of Jan. 27, the annual U.N.-designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Amichai Chikli, Israel\u2019s Minister for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, said he was \u201cstunned\u201d by Higgins\u2019 decision to use a Holocaust commemoration event to \u201cspit in the faces of Holocaust survivors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&lt;span class=&#8221;css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3&#8243;&gt;I was stunned by the decision of Ireland\u2019s President, Michael Higgins, to use the events of International Holocaust Remembrance Day as an opportunity to spit in the faces of Holocaust survivors and trample on the memory of six million innocent people murdered by Nazi Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Like a professional antisemite, Higgins masked his blatant hatred for the Jewish people with fabricated tales about genocide in Gaza. He falsely asserted last month that Israel is seeking to build a \u201csettlement\u201d in Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar responded to that allegation by saying: \u201cOnce an antisemitic liar\u2014always an antisemitic liar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In response to Sunday\u2019s events, Sa\u2019ar tweeted: \u201cEven on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Irish President Michael Higgins couldn\u2019t help himself and resorted to a cheap, despicable provocation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even though Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, had carried out the worst one-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, \u201cNonetheless, [Higgins] echoed Hamas\u2019s antisemitic lies and propaganda at a Holocaust memorial ceremony, leading to the removal of Jews, descendants of Holocaust survivors, from the event,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhat a despicable person. What a distorted policy. Shame!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel last month shuttered its embassy in Ireland after the Irish government approved a proposal to intervene in South Africa\u2019s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
