The new Irish government may scale back an anti-Israel trade policy, while continuing to support international pressure on the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Irish parliament met on Jan. 22 to discuss and approve the \u201cdraft program for government 2025,\u201d which includes a section titled \u201cThe Middle East,\u201d focused solely on Israel and the Palestinians. <\/span><\/p>\n

That section states that the government will \u201cprogress legislation prohibiting goods from Occupied Palestinian Territories,\u201d referring to a bill that would ban trade with Israelis in Judea and Samaria. <\/span><\/p>\n

A recent article in The Irish Mail on Sunday<\/em> stated that the government, despite using the word \u201cprogress,\u201d may not advance the bill at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe bill is now unlikely to ever make the statute books amid deepening fears it will damage Ireland\u2019s corporate and diplomatic relations with the U.S.,\u201d stated the article under the headline<\/a> \u201cIsraeli trade ban will be dropped to appease Trump.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Miche\u00e1l Martin, the incoming Irish foreign minister, told<\/a> The Irish Times<\/em> on Jan. 19 that \u201cvirtually every section\u201d of the existing Occupied Territories Bill will need to be amended. \u201cIt is acknowledged by all sides that the bill was unconstitutional as drafted, and in other areas, it was deficient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to addressing the Israel-Ireland trade policy, the government program states that Ireland will continue to support South Africa<\/a>\u2019s case at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide, and plans to continue a call for a \u201creview\u201d of the free-trade agreement<\/a> between Israel and the European Union. <\/span><\/p>\n

It also states that it will \u201cgive effect\u201d to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s working definition of antisemitism and implement the E.U. declaration on \u201cFostering Jewish Life in Europe.\u201d Martin announced last week that the government had adopted both, but received activist pressure against the move. He emphasized<\/a> in a later statement, however, that the decisions are \u201cnon-legally binding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In December, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar ordered<\/a> the closure of Israel\u2019s embassy in Dublin due to \u201cantisemitic actions and rhetoric\u201d consistently undertaken by the Irish government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Security staff at a Holocaust commemoration event in Dublin on Sunday forcibly removed several people who turned their backs to Ireland\u2019s president while he was speaking in protest against his anti-Israel policies.<\/span><\/p>\n

The demonstrators stood up as soon as Michael Higgins mentioned Israel during his speech at Dublin\u2019s Mansion House, the RTE<\/em> broadcaster reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that those in Israel who mourn their loved ones, those who have been waiting for the release of hostages, or the thousands searching for relatives in the rubble and Gaza, will welcome the long-overdue ceasefire, for which there has been such a heavy price paid,\u201d said Higgins.<\/span><\/p>\n

The President of Ireland\u2014as expected\u2014used his address at a Holocaust Remembeance Day ceremony to attack Israel, in a shocking instance of Holocaust inversion.<\/p>\n
