The director of the Oscar-nominated film \u201cEmilia Perez\u201d and its supporting actress Zoe Saldana have both publicly spoken out about the scandal involving the film\u2019s lead star Karla Sofia Gascon and her past comments on X\/Twitter, which include praise of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Spanish-language tweets from 2019 that\u00a0resurfaced<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday, Gascon seemingly defended Nazi leader Adolf Hitler for his hatred of Jews. \u201cI don\u2019t understand so much about the world war against Hitler, he simply had his opinion about Jews,\u201d she wrote in one post. She said in another tweet that year: \u201cHitler believed that his people were divine and belonged to a superior race. They all wiped him out, now the swastika can\u2019t even reproduce itself. The church, Islam, etc. have caused millions more deaths throughout the history of humanity and they are still there. It makes you think.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In Spanish-language separate tweets that resurfaced on Jan. 30, mostly from 2020 and 2021 but also as far back as 2016, Gasc\u00f3n\u00a0heavily criticized<\/a>\u00a0Islam, suggesting that it should be banned and that the religion \u201cviolates human rights.\u201d She attacked Muslim attire, language and culture in her native country of Spain. In 2016, she tweeted, \u201cIslam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured.\u201d In separate tweets she called African-Amercian man George Floyd a \u201cdrug addict and a hustler\u201d after he was killed by a police officer in 2020 and inspired protests around the US.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEmilia Perez,\u201d a Spanish-language musical and crime drama about a transgender gangster, received 13 Oscar nominations this year \u2013 more than any other film. It includes Saldana\u2019s first Academy Award nomination, for best supporting actress, and a nod for director\/co-writer Jacques Audiard. The film set a new record for the most Oscar nominations earned by a non-English film and marks the first time an openly trans actor, Gasc\u00f3n, has been nominated for an Oscar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Audiard told\u00a0Deadline<\/a>\u00a0this week on Wednesday that Gascon\u2019s past comments on X are \u201cinexcusable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sof\u00eda,\u201d he said. \u201cThe trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set that was indeed based on trust. And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected. It\u2019s as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sof\u00eda said is inexcusable.\u201d Audiard added that he has not spoken to Garcon since the controversy erupted last week, \u201cand I don\u2019t want to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not getting in touch with her because right now she needs space to reflect and take accountability for her actions,\u201d he explained. \u201cShe\u2019s really playing the victim. She\u2019s talking about herself as a victim, which is surprising. It\u2019s as if she thought that words don\u2019t hurt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Garcon apologized for her past social media activity in a statement on Jan. 30 via Netflix, where her \u201cEmilia Perez\u201d is streaming. \u201cAs someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain,\u201d she said. \u201cAll my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.\u201d Gasc\u00f3n has since deactivated her X account.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later, in a lengthy Instagram\u00a0post<\/a>, she apologized again but also defended herself, saying in Spanish that her posts were taken out of context. She insisted that she\u2019s \u201cnot racist\u201d and that she was not given the option to explain the \u201creal intention\u201d behind her comments on X. \u201cI have always fought for a more just society and for a world of freedom, of peace and of love. I will never support wars, religious extremism or oppression of races and peoples,\u201d she wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0Variety<\/em><\/a>\u00a0published this week on Wednesday, Saldana expressed sadness and disappointment about the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sad. Time and time again, that\u2019s the word because that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m also disappointed. I can\u2019t speak for other people\u2019s actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gascon told CNN Espa\u00f1ol that her \u201cEmilia Perez\u201d co-stars Salda\u00f1a and Gomez \u201csupport me 200 percent,\u201d but Salda\u00f1a would not confirm that claim while speaking to\u00a0Variety<\/em>. Instead, Saldana said: \u201cI do not support any negative rhetoric of racism and bigotry towards any group of people. That is what I want to stand for.\u201d Saldana made similar comments in London last week during a Q&A for \u201cEmilia Perez.\u201d She said at the time: \u201cI don\u2019t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
