U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, coordinating with the U.S. State Department, arrested Mahmoud Khalil, who completed his graduate studies at Columbia University in December, \u201cin support of President Trump\u2019s executive orders prohibiting antisemitism,\u201d the U.S. Department of Homeland Security\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKhalil led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization,\u201d the department added. \u201cICE and the Department of State are committed to enforcing President Trump\u2019s executive orders and to protecting U.S. national security.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be revoking the visas and\/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state, in response to an\u00a0Associated Press<\/em>\u00a0story about the arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the ICE website, a Mahmoud Khalil, who is from Syria, is in the custody at Elizabeth Contract Detention Facility in New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several senators supported Rubio\u2019s statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTerrorist sympathizers have no place in our country,\u201d\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho else is glad this pro-Hamas agent of antisemitism has been detained?\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). \u201cSo many people want to immigrate to America,\u201d he\u00a0added<\/a>. \u201cWe don\u2019t need those who support genocidal war criminals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are sending a clear message to terrorist sympathizers,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.). \u201cI\u2019ve been calling for this in the Senate, and I\u2019m thankful we have leadership in this new administration that is standing up for what is right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cObtaining a U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right,\u201d\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.). \u201cFriends of Hamas\u2014don\u2019t let the door hit you on the way out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Khalil\u2019s lawyer said that he was arrested in Columbia housing at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night, the\u00a0Columbia Spectator<\/em>, a student paper,\u00a0reported<\/a>. \u201cThe agents said they were detaining him because the State Department had revoked his student visa, but Khalil is a green card holder and a lawful permanent resident,\u201d his lawyer told the\u00a0Spectator<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Columbia stated on Sunday that \u201cthere have been reports of ICE around campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cColumbia has and will continue to follow the law. Consistent with our longstanding practice and the practice of cities and institutions throughout the country, law enforcement must have a judicial warrant to enter non-public university areas, including university buildings,\u201d the university\u00a0stated<\/a>. \u201cColumbia is committed to complying with all legal obligations and supporting our student body and campus community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The university also released a \u201cfurther\u201d\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday, in which it stated that \u201cthere have been reports of ICE in the streets around campus. Columbia has and will continue to follow the law. We want to again communicate to our campus community that we have a\u00a0protocol\u00a0in place, which includes\u00a0phone numbers to call in case you are approached on or off campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cConsistent with this protocol, and consistent with our longstanding practice and the practice of cities and institutions throughout the country, law enforcement must have a judicial warrant to enter non-public university areas, including residential university buildings,\u201d it stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cColumbia is committed to complying with all legal obligations and supporting our student body and campus community,\u201d it added. \u201cWe are also committed to the legal rights of our students and urge all members of the community to be respectful of those rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Khalil\u2019s lawyer\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Associated Press<\/em>\u00a0that ICE agents also sought to arrest Khalil\u2019s wife, \u201can American citizen who is eight months pregnant,\u201d per the news wire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump admin is going after students, who have used their First Amendment, constitutional rights. This is unacceptable,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), who has a long history of criticizing Israel. \u201cDeporting legal residents solely for expressing their political opinions is a violation of free speech rights. Who\u2019s next? Citizens?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFinally! An anti-Jewish activist Mahmoud Khalil, who led the pro-Hamas mobs at both Columbia University and Barnard College, has been arrested by ICE agents at his campus apartment,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Brooke Goldstein, executive director of the Lawfare Project.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKhalil faces having his visa revoked and his green card canceled following President Trump\u2019s long overdue crackdown on unrest at colleges,\u201d Goldstein wrote. \u201cGodspeed. Good riddance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
