Photo: Reuters\/Alexander Pohl<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Three young Syrian men rioted in front of the Jewish Museum in Munich this past weekend, spitting on photographs of Israeli hostages and deceased soldiers before one of the assailants threatened security personnel with a knife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The incident, first reported by German media, was one of the latest antisemitic cases in a country that has\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/29\/antisemitism-berlin-surges-record-levels-this-year-new-data-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experienced a surge in open hatred toward Jews<\/a>\u00a0since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During the Gaza conflict, the Jewish Museum has displayed photographs of hostages taken by Hamas-led Palestinian terrorists during their Oct. 7, 2023, invasion of southern Israel as well as deceased Israeli soldiers, along with candles, to honor and remember them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Saturday afternoon, three men \u2014 Syrian citizens living in Austria \u2014 vandalized the memorial by spitting on it while shouting antisemitic slogans, the German newspapers\u00a0<em>S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>J\u00fcdische Allgemeine\u00a0<\/em>reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After witnessing the attack, two employees from the Jewish community\u2019s security service tried to stop the assailants, who responded aggressively. One of the three men, a 19-year-old, allegedly kicked one of the employees before drawing a knife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Several police officers assigned to protect the Jewish Center, located next to the museum, noticed the incident and intervened. Soon afterward, more than 30 officers arrived at the scene. Police and security guards had to threaten to use their firearms before the teenager dropped the knife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to local police, the man and his two accomplices, a 20-year-old and a 31-year-old, have all been arrested and are under investigation for threats, assault, defamation, and insulting the memory of the deceased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">Munich<\/span><span class=\"VIpgJd-yAWNEb-VIpgJd-fmcmS-sn54Q\">\u00a0Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office has taken over the case, with senior prosecutor\u00a0<\/span>Andreas Franck, who also serves as the antisemitism commissioner of the Bavarian judiciary, overseeing the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Germany has experienced a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/24\/germanys-chancellor-anyone-who-incites-antisemitism-must-expect-be-prosecuted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sharp spike in antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0since Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 massacre across southern Israel, amid the ensuing war in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In just the first six months of 2024 alone, the number of antisemitic incidents in Berlin surpassed the total for all of the prior year and reached the highest annual count on record, according to Germany\u2019s Federal Association of Departments for Research and Information on Antisemitism (RIAS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The figures compiled by RIAS were the highest count for a single year since the federally-funded body began monitoring antisemitic incidents in 2015, showing the German capital averaged nearly eight anti-Jewish outrages a day from January to June last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), police registered 5,154 antisemitic incidents in Germany in 2023, a 95 percent increase compared to the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However,<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/06\/06\/the-real-number-of-antisemitic-incidents-is-five-times-what-is-reported-federal-commissioner-felix-klein-on-combating-jew-hatred-in-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0experts believe that the true number<\/a>\u00a0of incidents is much higher but not recorded because of reluctance on the part of the victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOnly 20 percent of the antisemitic crimes are reported, so the real number should be five times what we have,\u201d Felix Klein, the German federal government\u2019s chief official dealing with antisemitism, told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0in an interview in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Earlier this year,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/24\/germanys-chancellor-anyone-who-incites-antisemitism-must-expect-be-prosecuted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned<\/a>\u00a0the ongoing discrimination faced by the Jewish community, calling it \u201coutrageous and shameful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last month, Germany\u2019s federal parliament, the Bundestag, passed a motion to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/02\/03\/germanys-parliament-moves-combat-antisemitism-universities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">address antisemitism and hostility toward Israel<\/a>\u00a0in schools and universities, seeking to combat a surge in pro-Hamas demonstrations on campuses and antisemitic incidents across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jewish students at German universities\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/12\/28\/german-students-convicted-of-antisemitism-could-face-expulsion-from-universities-education-minister-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">widely expressed a growing sense of insecurity<\/a>\u00a0and uneasiness following Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 invasion of southern Israel, amid a slew of incidents purportedly meant to protest the war in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The recently passed parliamentary motion stipulates that the federal government \u2014 in collaboration with the ministers of education and the German Rectors\u2019 Conference, an association of state and state-recognized universities \u2014 must ensure that antisemitic behavior in educational institutions results in sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis includes the consistent enforcement of house rules, temporary exclusion from classes or studies, and even \u2026 expulsion,\u201d the motion reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background: #d0e6fa; width: 100%;\" \/>\n<div id=\"content\"
