background: #d0e6fa; width: 100%;\" \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Columbia University interim president steps down a week after announcing sweeping policy changes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/senate.columbia.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/cu_crop\/public\/content\/Images\/Armstrong_Katrina.jpg?itok=ptuRVPCr\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>The university\u2019s interim president issued a statement after the \u2018Washington Free Beacon\u2019 reported that she had downplayed an agreement with the Trump administration<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During a virtual meeting with faculty over the weekend, Katrina Armstrong, the interim president of Columbia University, downplayed the school\u2019s commitment to the Trump administration that it would address Jew-hatred on campus,\u00a0<em>The Washington Free Beacon<\/em>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/what-columbia-university-president-really-told-faculty-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Armstrong told some 75 professors assembled on a Saturday morning Zoom call that the Ivy League school had made \u201cno changes\u201d to rules about mask-wearing on campus, per a transcript of the call that the\u00a0<em>Free Beacon<\/em>\u00a0obtained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMuch has been said about Columbia by people inside and outside of our community, sometimes without full context, including statements attributed to me from internal meetings,\u201d Armstong\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/president.columbia.edu\/news\/statement-regarding-columbias-commitments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday. \u201cLet there be no confusion: I commit to seeing these changes implemented with the full support of Columbia\u2019s senior leadership team and the board of trustees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAny suggestion that these measures are illusory or lack my personal support is unequivocally false,\u201d she added. \u201cThese changes are real, and they are right for Columbia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Orri Zussman, 20, a freshman studying mechanical engineering at Columbia, told JNS that the school\u2019s declared mask-banning policy is vague.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"related-articles-module bg-silver moved\">\n<div class=\"related-articles-inner\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIf you look at the way that they phrased their \u2018ban,\u2019 it\u2019s basically just re-emphasizing Columbia\u2019s right to tell you to take off your mask if you\u2019re doing something that violates their policy,\u201d he said. \u201cThen if you refuse to take off your mask, then they have the right to kick you off of campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn essence, nothing has changed,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is no mask ban.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-jns.org\/uploads\/2025\/03\/2048px-Columbias_Kent_Hall-1320x880.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Kent Hall at Columbia University in New York, N.Y., Sept. 1, 2024.
