style=\"color: #000080;\">On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that both countries are trying to negotiate a deal, with talks set to take place in Oman\u2019s capital, Muscat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe\u2019re having direct talks with Iran, and they\u2019ve started,\u201d Trump told reporters while\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/04\/07\/trump-netanyahu-meet-dc-talk-tariffs-iran-white-house-cancels-press-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>\u00a0at the White House. \u201cThere\u2019s a major meeting going on between us and Iran that will take place on Saturday, and it will be top level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">US and Iranian officials have put out contradictory statements about whether the talks will be direct or indirect, the latter of which would involve Omani mediators passing messages between the sides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable,\u201d Trump said in the Oval Office on Monday. \u201cIran cannot have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He added, \u201cIf it can be done diplomatically in a full way, the way it was done in Libya, I think that would be a good thing. \u2026 Hopefully, those talks will be successful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to Iranian state media, the negotiations will be led by Araghchi and US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, with Oman\u2019s Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, serving as a mediator, as the country has long been a channel for communication between the two adversaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tehran has previously said that the country\u2019s missile program would be off limits in any nuclear discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last week,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/04\/03\/russia-says-us-threats-military-strikes-against-iran-unacceptable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trump threatened to bomb Iran<\/a>\u00a0and impose secondary tariffs if Tehran does not reach an agreement with Washington to curb its nuclear program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In response to the White House\u2019s military threats, Iran issued notices to Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, and Bahrain, warning that any support for a US attack on Iran \u2014 including the use of their airspace or territory by American forces \u2014 would be considered an act of hostility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During his first term, Trump withdrew the US from a 2015 nuclear deal \u2014 known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) \u2014\u00a0between Iran and several world powers, which had imposed temporary limits on Tehran\u2019s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Addressing Washington\u2019s military threats, Araghchi said last week that Iran has always complied with the nuclear deal and never sought to develop nuclear weapons, stressing that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/03\/31\/iran-will-deliver-strong-blow-against-us-if-it-attacks-khamenei-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">military action against the country<\/a>\u00a0is not a viable option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201c10 years after signing the JCPOA \u2014 and 7 years after the US unilaterally walked away from it \u2014 there is not ONE SHRED OF PROOF that Iran has violated this commitment,\u201d Araghchi wrote in a post on X. \u201cDiplomatic engagement worked in the past and can still work. However, Netanyahu also mentioned that military action was discussed as a secondary option if diplomacy fails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe second possibility, that will not be, is that they drag out the talks and then there is the military option,\u201d he said in a statement after his meeting with Trump. \u201cEveryone understands this.
