Photo: REUTERS\/Carlos Barria<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">US President Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy to the Middle East on Tuesday called on Iran to \u201cstop and eliminate its\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/19\/iran-covertly-ramping-up-nuclear-weaponization-work-dissident-group-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nuclear enrichment and weaponization program<\/a>,\u201d apparently toughening his position against Tehran less than 24 hours after suggesting the Islamic Republic would be allowed to maintain its nuclear program in a limited capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cA deal with Iran will only be completed if it is a Trump deal,\u201d Steve Witkoff posted on the social media platform X\/Twitter. \u201cAny final arrangement must set a framework for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Middle East \u2014 meaning that Iran must stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weaponization program. It is imperative for the world that we create a tough, fair deal that will endure, and that is what\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/04\/11\/white-house-says-hell-pay-should-iran-develop-nuclear-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">President Trump has asked me to do<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Witkoff\u2019s statement appeared to be a complete reversal from comments he made to Fox News during an interview on Monday night, in which he indicated that the White House would allow Iran to enrich uranium to a 3.67 percent threshold, allowing Tehran to create a \u201ccivil nuclear program.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIran does not need to enrich past 3.67 percent. In some circumstances, they\u2019re at 60 percent; in other circumstances, 20 percent. That cannot be,\u201d Witkoff said. \u201cYou do not need to run \u2014 as they claim \u2014 a civil nuclear program where you\u2019re enriching past 3.67 percent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Negotiations between the US and Iran regarding a potential deal over the latter\u2019s nuclear program began this past weekend in Oman.\u00a0Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi each led their respective delegations in the discussions, which were facilitated indirectly via mediators. The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/04\/12\/iran-us-end-high-level-talks-in-oman-agree-to-resume-next-week-tehran-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White House touted the deliberations<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cpositive and constructive\u201d and confirmed a second round of deliberations set for Saturday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During Monday\u2019s interview, Witkoff confirmed that the next round of negotiations will center on \u201cverification on the enrichment program and then ultimately verification on weaponization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThat includes missiles \u2014 the type of missiles that they have stockpiled there. And it includes the trigger for a bomb,\u201d Witkoff said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Critics pointed out that Witkoff\u2019s proposal seemed to resemble the 2015 deal struck between the US under the Obama administration, Iran, and other world powers which also aimed to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon by prohibiting the regime from enriching uranium past 3.67 percent. The first Trump administration scrapped the deal in 2018, arguing that the agreement would allow Iran to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/02\/03\/iran-covertly-developing-nuclear-warheads-be-placed-missiles-dissident-group-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clandestinely pursue a nuclear weapon<\/a>, and reimposed harsh sanctions on the regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran has claimed that its nuclear program is for civilian purposes rather than building weapons. However, the UN\u2019s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reported in December that Iran had\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/02\/26\/irans-near-bomb-grade-uranium-stockpile-jumps-iaea-reports-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">greatly accelerated uranium enrichment<\/a>\u00a0to close to the 90 percent weapons-grade level at its Fordow site dug into a mountain. The UK, France, and Germany said in a joint statement that there is no \u201ccredible civilian justification\u201d for Iran\u2019s recent nuclear activity, arguing it \u201cgives Iran the capability to rapidly produce sufficient fissile material for multiple nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel has been among the most vocal proponents of dismantling Iran\u2019s nuclear program, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arguing that that the US should pursue a \u201cLibyan option\u201d to eliminate the possibility of Tehran acquiring a nuclear weapon by overseeing the destruction of Iran\u2019s nuclear installations and the dismantling of equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThat could be done diplomatically, in a full way, the way it was done in Libya.
