Israel intended to strike Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities as early as May, a plan that would have required American assistance. But U.S. President Donald Trump decided against an attack in favor of negotiations,\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0<\/em>reported on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s decision came \u201cafter months of internal debate\u201d about whether to pursue a military or diplomatic option. Even hawkish members of Trump\u2019s cabinet expressed skepticism that a military strike could destroy Iran\u2019s nuclear ambitions, resulting in a \u201crough consensus\u201d that for the time being negotiation was the better option, the\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/em>reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0said it had spoken to multiple officials who had been briefed on Israel\u2019s plans. Most were interviewed on condition of anonymity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel, which has long been preparing for an attack on Iran, with or without U.S. help, sees the current situation as favorable to a strike on Iran\u2019s nuclear sites.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s air force has already eliminated most of Iran\u2019s air defenses, and has severely damaged Iran\u2019s proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon. The fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December eliminated a key Iranian ally that acted as a conduit for Iranian arms to Hezbollah.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Times<\/em>, senior Israeli officials pitched a plan to their American counterparts that would have combined an Israeli commando raid on underground Iranian nuclear sites with a bombing effort that would have involved U.S. aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n

The goal was to set back Iran\u2019s ability to develop a nuclear weapon by a year or more.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Israel\u2019s military said the commando operation wouldn\u2019t be ready until October. As Netanyahu wanted the timeline for an attack sped up, Israeli planners shifted to a proposal for an extended bombing campaign, necessitating U.S. support, the paper reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. officials were open to considering Israel\u2019s plans. U.S. Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, head of U.S. Central Command, and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz discussed how the United States might support such an attack, according to the\u00a0Times<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. assistance would have focused on responding to Iranian retaliation against Israel, and ensuring the attack itself was successful. (U.S. forces\u00a0assisted\u00a0<\/a>Israel in intercepting Iranian missile attacks in April and October of last year.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s attacks were ineffective, with most of its missiles and drones failing to reach their targets. Israel\u2019s counterattacks against Tehran\u2019s anti-aircraft systems left the country\u00a0naked<\/a>\u00a0to attack, something Israel wants to capitalize on, the\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0said.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, during a meeting with Netanyahu in the Oval Office on April 7, Trump\u00a0announced\u00a0<\/a>that he would pursue talks with Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Israeli prime minister, in a video released by his office the next day,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0an agreement would work only if Iran agreed to completely dismantle its nuclear facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey go in, blow up the installations, dismantle all of the equipment under American supervision and carried out by America\u2014this would be good,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He warned that Iran may try to play for time. \u201cThe second possibility\u2014that will not be\u2014is that they drag out the talks, and then there is the military option. Everyone understands this. We spoke about this at length,\u201d he said, referring to his discussions with the U.S. president.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump agreed on this point,\u00a0telling<\/a>\u00a0the press on Wednesday that he wouldn\u2019t allow talks to drag on. \u201cWe have a little time, but we don\u2019t have much time,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The president also didn\u2019t rule out a military option, stating that it \u201cabsolutely\u201d remains an option. \u201cWith Iran, if it requires military, we\u2019re going to have military. Israel will obviously be very much involved in that and be the leader in that,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump has\u00a0signaled<\/a>\u00a0readiness to directly attack Iran before.<\/span><\/p>\n

On March 17, he accused Iran of orchestrating attacks by Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels and warned that any further aggression from the group would result in severe retaliation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet nobody be fooled! The hundreds of attacks being made by Houthi, the sinister mobsters and thugs based in Yemen, who are hated by the Yemeni people, all emanate from, and are created by, IRAN,\u201d Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States has moved significant military assets into the region, including the USS\u00a0Carl Vinson<\/em>\u00a0and USS Harry S. Truman.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, the United States\u00a0sent\u00a0<\/a>multiple B-2 bombers to a military base on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n

With a range of 6,900 miles, the B-2 is the only stealth aircraft that can carry the GBU-57, a 30,000-pound \u201cbunker-buster\u201d bomb known as the Massive Ordnance Penetrator.<\/span><\/p>\n
