Palestinians in Gaza again protested against Hamas on Wednesday after the initial wave of protests died down earlier this month amid Hamas threats and brutal violence against those who participated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crowds of Palestinians marched in Beit Lahia, which is in northern Gaza, on Wednesday\u00a0chanting<\/a>\u00a0\u201cHamas out, out!\u201d and \u201cWe don\u2019t want a Qatari tent\u2014we want to live in freedom.\u201d Other chants included, \u201cYes to love, no to terrorism, yes to peace\u201d and \u201cDeliver the message\u2026 all of Hamas is garbage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

One protest leader\u00a0explained<\/a>, \u201cWe want to live in peace\u2014we don\u2019t want more wars.\u201d Based on videos of the protests, it appears hundreds may have been in attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon after the protests started, members of Hamas showed up in masks with pro-Hamas messages on posters such as \u201cBeit Lahia with the resistance.\u201d Photos and\u00a0videos<\/a>\u00a0of the pro-Hamas agitators\u00a0circulated<\/a>\u00a0on Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood-aligned social channels. However, the protesters quickly\u00a0kicked out<\/a>\u00a0those who aimed to distort what the aims of the protests truly were.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamas, which brutally seized full control of Gaza in 2007, sparked the current war in the Palestinian enclave when it invaded Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 hostages. The ensuing conflict has resulted in massive losses for Hamas but also created a humanitarian crisis among Gazan civilians.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anger with Hamas among Gaza\u2019s population is widespread. A recent poll from the Institute for Social and Economic Progress\u00a0showed<\/a>\u00a0that only 6 percent of Gazans want Hamas to exclusively rule the enclave after the war, and even fewer said they would vote for them if elections were held today. However, 38 percent expressed support for a unity government, which would presumably include Hamas in power as part of a coalition with other Palestinian factions.<\/span><\/p>\n

In late March, an initial wave of anti-Hamas\u00a0protests broke out across Gaza<\/a>, with thousands marching against the war and Hamas. The Assembly of Southern Gaza clans released a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0at the time against Hamas, saying, \u201cEnough is enough \u2014 a popular uprising against injustice. No more playing with our lives, our children\u2019s future, or disregarding our suffering. Gaza is not anyone\u2019s hostage; Gaza will be liberated by the will of its people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0statement<\/a>, released by the clans of Shuja\u2019iyya in northern Gaza, read, \u201cWe call on you to take to the streets in a popular march of anger rejecting the continuation of the war, and demanding the lifting of Hamas\u2019s control over the Gaza Strip, so that life can return to its people and our ongoing suffering can come to an end.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, after a little less than a week of continuous protests, they died down , partly due to Hamas threats and violence against those who took part in them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, there<\/a>\u00a0were\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0death threats<\/a>\u00a0and even attempted executions and kidnappings by Hamas targeting those participating in the protests. Hamas officials have also\u00a0reportedly<\/a>\u00a0called activists and threatened them not to join that Friday\u2019s protests, which were supposed to be a part of a \u201cDay of Rage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamas reportedly tortured a 22-year-old man, Uday Rabie, to death for speaking out against the group and attending the protests. Rabie\u2019s brother, Hassan,\u00a0told CNN<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cThey took him, they kept torturing him.\u201d Rabie was reportedly tied by the neck with a rope<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey handed him over to me, and told me, in these words,\u201d Hassan said. \u201cThis is the fate of everyone who disrespects Al-Qassam Brigades and speaks ill of them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabie died in the hospital shortly after.<\/span><\/p>\n
