Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In March 2022, the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0unveiled a global\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/press\/our-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strategy<\/a>\u00a0that spoke of targeting \u201cevery curious, English-speaking person\u201d and playing \u201can even bigger role in the lives of tens of millions of people around the world.\u201d It didn\u2019t speak of being a New York or American newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The paper was following through on an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/15\/business\/media\/new-york-times-plans-international-digital-expansion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effort<\/a>\u00a0it announced in 2016 as \u201can ambitious plan to expand its international digital audience and increase revenue outside the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/15\/business\/media\/new-york-times-plans-international-digital-expansion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0then, \u201cJust as The Times pushed beyond its local boundaries to become a national newspaper in the 1990s, the executives said in the memo that they now saw the \u201copportunity to become an indispensable leader in global news and opinion\u2019 by expanding its presence outside the country\u2019s borders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How far has the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0gotten toward achieving its objective of shifting its prototypical customer from a housewife in the Westchester County, New York, suburb of Scarsdale to some college professor in Berlin or bureaucrat in Brussels?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An indication is available in the reader comments on a\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0news article headlined \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/15\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-medics-autopsies-israel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autopsies of Gaza Medics Killed by Israeli Troops Show Some Were Shot in the Head<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Many of the Israel-bashing comments on the article come from readers based outside of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThere appears to be no law at all when it comes to Israel\u2019s prosecution of war. No constraints. No real international pressure to try and contain these all too frequent violations,\u201d\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/shared\/comment\/46t3hn?rsrc=cshare&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0commenter identified as Richard Smith from Edinburgh, U.K. He called Israel\u2019s behavior \u201csickening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Another\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0commenter, H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Volat of Paris,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/shared\/comment\/46t32n?rsrc=cshare&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a>, \u201ceach time I thought of having seen the worst, Israel surprises me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Another commenter, \u201cMelan\u201d from Berlin,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/shared\/comment\/46t2o0?rsrc=cshare&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a>\u00a0to call for sanctions on Israel similar to those on Russia: \u201cFreeze assets, ban travel, and block arms deals for officials behind the killings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0commenter Michelle from Montreal\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/15\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-medics-autopsies-israel.html#permid=141462202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a>, \u201cI will never buy anything made in Israel ever again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Times<\/em>\u00a0commenter \u201cSteve\u201d from Toronto\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/shared\/comment\/46soqn?rsrc=cshare&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a>, \u201cI really wish the USA would stop supporting this country. Have you no morals?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Another\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0commenter, Denis Coakley from Ireland,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/shared\/comment\/46sp5e?rsrc=cshare&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contends<\/a>, \u201cIsrael has descended to the level of Hamas\u2026 Sadly this is a result of the blank-cheque given to Netanyahu by his fellow tyrant in the White House.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0staff is becoming increasingly international just as its readership is. The bylines on this story include those of Christoph Koettl, a graduate of the University of Vienna, according to his\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/christophkoettl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>, who spent eight years as an employee of or consultant to the anti-Israel advocacy group Amnesty International and its affiliates; and of Bilal Shbair, who previously worked in Gaza as an English teacher for UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. Reporting was also contributed by \u201cAbubakr Abdelbagi and Naziha Baassiri,\u201d who don\u2019t have biographies available on the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0article says the autopsies \u201cwere performed by Dr. Ahmad Dhair, the head of the Gazan health ministry\u2019s forensic medicine unit,\u201d without telling readers that the health ministry is controlled by the Hamas terrorist organization, or that Hamas restricts what reporters inside Gaza can report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Having maxed out of anti-Israel readers on university campuses that provide enterprise-wide\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0access to students, faculty, and staff, the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0is now trying to increase its revenues by chasing anti-Israel readers all the way to Europe and Canada. As a business growth strategy it may make some sense. The tradeoff, though, is turning the newspaper\u2019s comments section into an anti-Israel sewer, and also allowing the news section of the paper to be used as a platform for stories that seem calculated to fuel anti-Israel animus. That comes at some cost to whatever is left of the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u2019s fading credibility with whatever readers remain from the days when the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0was a New York newspaper, or a proudly American one.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><i><strong>Ira Stoll<\/strong> was managing editor of The Forward and North American editor of The Jerusalem Post.
