Israel\u2019s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer vowed at a policy summit on Monday that Israel would defeat Hamas and bring home the hostages still being held by the Palestinian terrorist group in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

His remarks came amid reports that Israeli officials had formally rejected an\u00a0Egyptian-brokered proposal for a five-year truce<\/a>\u00a0between Israel and Hamas in exchange for the release of 59 hostages still held in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to dismantle Hamas\u2019s military capabilities and end its rule in Gaza. We will ensure that Gaza can never again pose a threat to the State of Israel. And we are committed to bringing all our hostages home. These are the goals we have set, and we fully intend to achieve them,\u201d Dermer vowed.<\/span><\/p>\n

An Israeli senior official was cited earlier in the day as saying that Jerusalem had rebuffed a five-year truce that would see Hamas able to \u201crearm, recover, and continue\u00a0its war against the State of Israel<\/a>\u00a0with greater intensity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The sentiment was echoed by several civil society leaders at the Jewish News Syndicate policy summit in Jerusalem, which brought together largely conservative policymakers, diplomats, academics, and journalists.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is absolutely no way that Hamas will give over every piece of its leverage. Even if there is a ceasefire, it will look\u00a0more like [the one with] Hezbollah<\/a>, which is not actually a ceasefire,\u201d political commentator Meira Kolatch said, referring to the truce repeatedly violated by the Iran-backed terrorist group.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe soldiers won\u2019t agree to this,\u201d Kolatch told\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

American influencer and PragerU host Xaviaer DuRousseau warned against \u201cover-negotiating\u201d with a terrorist organization such as Hamas. \u201cFive years is far too long for Hamas to exist. Five days is too long. We need to be much more direct and forceful in doing everything to bring the hostages home and make sure Hamas is wiped off the planet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the Gaza war, a major focus of the gathering was Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his address at the summit a day earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid out a framework for\u00a0countering Iranian nuclear ambitions<\/a>. Noting strong US-Israel alignment on preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, Netanyahu called for a deal that would fully dismantle Iran\u2019s enrichment infrastructure and curb its production of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA bad deal is worse than no deal,\u201d Netanyahu warned, emphasizing that only the complete dismantling of Iran\u2019s nuclear infrastructure would eliminate the threat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe only good deal that works is a deal like the one that was made with Libya that removed all [nuclear] infrastructure,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/i>, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon expressed skepticism over the\u00a0Trump administration\u2019s Oman-based talks<\/a>\u00a0with the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program, calling the Iranians \u201cmasters of deception.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dermer was more diplomatic, telling audience members that he was \u201cconfident\u201d that US President Donald Trump would \u201cmake a good deal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In his address to the gathering,\u00a0<\/i>Danon vowed the war against Hamas \u201cwill not end with hostages [remaining] in Gaza,\u201d referring to those kidnapped during the Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

Addressing Trump\u2019s decision to\u00a0nix the nomination of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY)<\/a>\u00a0as the American ambassador to the UN, Danon said he was \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d but confident that the president would pick a \u201cstrong\u201d candidate for the role and also have a hand in appointing a secretary-general who would be more favorable to Israel than the incumbent, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Danon, who led a delegation of over 30 UN ambassadors to the Hamas-attacked communities of southern Israel as well as to the site of the Nova music festival massacre, said Israel was under \u201cconstant attack\u201d at the UN. He pointed to the virulently\u00a0anti-Israel UN special rapporteur for Palestinian rights, Francesca Albanese<\/a>, who he said should be barred from entering the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Israeli envoy also backed Trump\u2019s efforts to\u00a0weed out antisemitism on US campuses<\/a>\u00a0and stop \u201cdangerous outsiders who are not even students but who go on campuses to incite.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Supporters of Israel should be \u201cas engaged as possible in the fight against antisemitism,\u201d Danon told\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/i>.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the war against Hamas, some experts in attendance argued that Israel also has to\u00a0alter its approach to Egypt<\/a>, with which Jerusalem has maintained a peace treaty for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jonathan Conricus, former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman and senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said Israel\u2019s approach toward Egypt needed urgent reassessment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey hold the keys to the future of Gaza,\u201d Conricus told\u00a0the Algemeiner<\/i>, referring to Egypt\u2019s control of the Rafah border crossing, which connects southern Gaza and Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n

He criticized Israel\u2019s reliance on diplomatic incentives with its southern neighbor, urging a\u00a0tougher stance while preserving the peace treaty<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been using way too much carrot, and far less than the necessary stick. They are, in many ways, dictating terms that we should be dictating and that\u2019s very regrettable,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery moment that they continue to keep the gates closed at Rafah really makes it close to impossible for us to actually defeat Hamas,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the status of the US-Israel relationship, Matt Brooks, CEO of the\u00a0Republican Jewish Coalition<\/a>, warned against what he termed the \u201cwoke right\u201d of the Republican party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe cancer that has taken over the Democratic Party with the woke progressive left \u2013 with Bernie Sanders, AOC, Ilhan Oman, Rashida Talib, and the protesters on college campuses \u2013 we\u2019re starting to see the beginning cells of that cancer start to take hold in the Republican Party,\u201d Brooks told the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking later to\u00a0The Algemeiner,\u00a0<\/i>Brooks said the danger came from rising voices within the GOP advocating American disengagement from the world, led by figures like\u00a0Tucker Carlson<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of foreign policy difference and in some ways economic populist difference between, say, Bernie Sanders on one hand and Tucker Carlson on the other,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Extremes on both the right and the left were converging in a form of \u201cneoisolationism\u201d that seeks to \u201cwithdraw America\u2019s role in the world and shrink it to just to our borders\u201d and that views Israel as a liability rather than a strategic ally, Brooks said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very dangerous place for the Republican Party and for the country to go,\u201d Brooks said.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the international scene, the director of UK Lawyers for Israel, Natasha Hausdorff, who joined a legal panel at the event, urged private individuals to take a more active role in advocating for the rule of law and equal treatment for\u00a0Israel in the international arena<\/a>, particularly in legal forums. She emphasized that civil society actors are often able to speak and act more freely than the state itself, which is constrained by diplomatic considerations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI fundamentally believe that we as civil society have a great deal more to contribute to the legal debate. There is currently a deficiency of Israel demanding its equal rights and demanding the proper application of international law in the international space,\u201d she told\u00a0The Algemeiner.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

In Israel\u2019s case, Hausdorff said, international law was being weaponized, resulting in \u201cthe erosion of legal terminology like apartheid, genocide, ethnic cleansing, colonialism, occupation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Marcus Sheff, CEO of curricula watchdog IMPACT-se, focused on the role of education in combating antisemitism. He cited Elie Wiesel\u2019s assertion that\u00a0fighting antisemitism must begin with books<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTextbooks are uniquely authoritative: they are a key tool in creating the societies of the future that will keep Jews safe,\u201d Sheff told\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/i>. \u201cFrom Saudi Arabia and the UAE to Morocco and Azerbaijan,\u00a0antisemitism is being eradicated from<\/a>\u00a0national school curricula.\u201d He urged Western countries \u2014 and even some school districts in the US \u2014 to follow the lead of those Muslim states.<\/span><\/p>\n
