She was held in captivity for months before being released earlier this year as part of a ceasefire deal. Photo: Jason Alpert-Wisnia\/Sipa USA via Reuters Connect<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a statement announcing this year\u2019s awards, the Pulitzer committee praised Abu Toha, 32, for his \u201cessays on the physical and emotional carnage in Gaza that combine deep reporting with the intimacy of memoir to convey the Palestinian experience of more than a year and a half of war with Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Damari, who was\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/30\/israeli-report-un-exposes-hamas-torture-sexual-abuse-hostages-including-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of 251 hostages kidnapped<\/a>\u00a0in southern Israel by Hamas-led Palestinian terrorists during the Oct. 7 onslaught, described the writer in different terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMosab Abu Toha is not a courageous writer,\u201d Damari wrote in her letter. \u201cHe is the modern-day equivalent of a Holocaust denier. And by honoring him, you have joined him in the shadows of denial.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">She continued, \u201cThis is not a question of politics. This is a question of humanity. And today, you have failed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">HonestReporting, a media watchdog group, also called for the Pulitzer Prize to be rescinded after it highlighted several posts in which Abu Toha denigrated Damari and other hostages, denied the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/02\/20\/saddest-day-yet-israel-mourns-slain-hostages-return-following-grotesque-hamas-ceremony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">murder of the Bibas children<\/a>, and spread fake news and antisemitic remarks across social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHow on earth is this girl called a hostage? (And this is the case of most \u2018hostages\u2019). This is Emily Damari, a 28 UK-Israeli soldier that Hamas detailed [sic] on 10\/7,\u201d Abu Toha wrote in a post on Facebook earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cSo this girl is called a \u2018hostage\u2019? This soldier who was close to the border with a city that she and her country have been occupying is called a \u2018hostage\u2019?\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In other social media posts, Abu Toha referred to Israeli soldiers as \u201ckillers who join the army and have family in the army,\u201d while criticizing international media for \u201chumaniz[ing]\u201d them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to HonestReporting, the Palestinian writer\u2019s online rhetoric fits the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/03\/04\/israel-begins-leadership-international-holocaust-remembrance-alliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism<\/a>, spreading misinformation and perpetuating harmful antisemitic stereotypes.
