Photo: REUTERS\/Martin Cassarini<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The head of Argentina\u2019s largest Jewish community center commended President Javier Milei for standing on \u201cthe right side of history\u201d and for his clear and forceful condemnation of terrorism following Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7, 2023, invasion of and massacre across southern Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe are very pleased with Milei\u2019s open support for Israel,\u201d Amos Linetzky, president of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA), told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0in an exclusive interview. \u201cThis stance places Argentina on the right side of history by openly defending the only democracy in the Middle East.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since taking office over a year ago, Milei has been\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/03\/03\/argentine-president-javier-milei-visit-israel-aim-strengthening-bilateral-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of Israel\u2019s most vocal supporters<\/a>, strengthening bilateral relations to unprecedented levels and in the process breaking with decades of Argentine foreign policy tradition to firmly align with Jerusalem and Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cSince Oct. 7, there can be no ambiguity: terrorism must be confronted without concern for political correctness,\u201d Linetzky said. \u201cTerrorism must be condemned where, whether directly or indirectly, it is being supported.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He continued, \u201cIn Argentina, there is a clear stance against terrorism at both the national and provincial levels, which is key to taking a firm approach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AMOS-1-1.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Amos Linetzky, president of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. Photo: AMIA<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Milei, who won Argentina\u2019s November 2023 presidential election, has been proactive in confronting terrorist groups and seeking justice for past atrocities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Less than a year after Hamas\u2019s onslaught in Israel, Milei\u2019s administration designated the Palestinian Islamist group as a terrorist organization \u2014 making Argentina the first Latin American country to do so \u2014\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/04\/25\/israeli-fm-praises-paraguay-decision-label-irans-irgc-proxies-hamas-hezbollah-terrorist-organizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with Paraguay joining the effort just last month<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Argentine president has also activated Interpol red notices in connection with the 1994 AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires. Last month, the lead prosecutor in the case petitioned Argentina\u2019s federal court\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/04\/09\/argentina-prosecutor-seeks-arrest-warrants-irans-supreme-leader-1994-amia-bombing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to issue national and international arrest warrants<\/a>\u00a0for Iran\u2019s so-called \u201csupreme leader,\u201d Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, over his alleged involvement in the deadly terrorist attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This latest legal move represents a significant shift from the country\u2019s past approach in the case, in which the Iranian leader was treated as enjoying diplomatic immunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, Sebasti\u00e1n Basso \u2014 who succeeded former\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/21\/amia-bombing-investigator-alberto-nisman-who-accused-iran-was-murdered-new-argentine-report-concludes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prosecutor Alberto Nisman after his murder in 2015<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 claimed that \u201cthis approach does not align with international law,\u201d especially regarding crimes against humanity and acts of terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The lead prosecutor argued that Khamenei was directly involved in planning the 1994 AMIA bombing \u2014 the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2020\/01\/01\/netflix-releases-documentary-series-on-murder-of-argentine-amia-bombing-prosecutor-alberto-nisman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deadliest terrorist attack in Argentina\u2019s history<\/a>, in which 85 people were killed and more than 300 wounded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThirty-one years after the attack, there are still no sanctions or convictions \u2014 no one has been held accountable,\u201d Linetzky told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>. \u201cAn appalling level of impunity continues to prevail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the Jewish leader, true justice remains out of reach without critical reforms \u2014 including judicial independence, genuine political will, and effective legislative tools to combat terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBeyond the lasting pain and continued impunity, the systemic failures of the Argentine state that allowed the attack to happen still remain \u2014 and that\u2019s deeply alarming,\u201d Linetzky said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cImpunity hasn\u2019t just persisted, but there has been no meaningful progress or reflection on the past,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, Linetzky also noted that the current government appears to have demonstrated a renewed commitment to pursuing justice \u2014 but whether that leads to real change remains to be seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThere is no true democracy without justice,\u201d the Jewish leader told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>. \u201cThere can be no justice as long as one of the most significant cases in Argentine history remains unpunished.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In 2006, former prosecutor Nisman formally charged Iran for orchestrating the 1994 terrorist attack and Iran\u2019s chief proxy, the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah, for carrying it out. Nine years later, he accused former Argentine President Cristina Fern\u00e1ndez de Kirchner of attempting to cover up the crime and block efforts to extradite the suspects behind the AMIA atrocity in return for Iranian oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AMIA-EDIFICIO.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>The 1994 AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires was the deadliest terrorist attack in Argentina\u2019s history, in which 85 people were killed and more than 300 wounded. Photo: AMIA<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The alleged cover-up was reportedly formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2013 between Kirchner\u2019s government and Iranian authorities, with the stated goal of cooperating to investigate the AMIA bombing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In April 2024,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/04\/12\/argentina-court-blames-iran-deadly-1994-bombing-jewish-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Argentina\u2019s second-highest court ruled\u00a0<\/a>that the 1994 attack in Buenos Aires was \u201corganized, planned, financed, and executed under the direction of the authorities of the Islamic State of Iran, within the framework of Islamic Jihad.\u201d The court also said that the bombing was carried out by Hezbollah terrorists responding to \u201ca political and strategic design\u201d by Tehran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The court additionally ruled that Iran had been responsible for the 1992 truck bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, which killed 29 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since the terrorist attacks in 1992 and 1994, diplomatic relations between Buenos Aires and Tehran have remained strained, with the latest moves by Basso and Argentina\u2019s growing support for Israel further intensifying tensions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Milei will visit Israel in June, where he is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jewish state against terrorism and antisemitism. He is also scheduled to address the Israeli parliament and meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In February 2024, on his first international trip as president,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/02\/06\/new-argentine-president-lands-in-israel-with-pledge-to-move-embassy-to-jerusalem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milei visited Israel<\/a>\u00a0in a show of wartime solidarity and reiterated his pledge to move Argentina\u2019s embassy to Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Earlier this year, more than 30 members of the Argentine Congress signed a Declaration of Solidarity and Friendship with the State of Israel in the Buenos Aires parliament.
