Duke University has apparently permitted an entire academic department to publicly align itself against Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2021, Duke\u2019s Department of Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies\u00a0endorsed<\/a>\u00a0a public statement declaring, \u201cWe stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine \u2026We do not subscribe to a \u2018both sides\u2019 rhetoric.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Duke gender studies website presently features a\u00a0section<\/a>\u00a0titled, \u201cDonation Suggestions for Palestine,\u201d which provides links to 12 organizations including Electronic Intifada and Mondoweiss, which are both stridently anti-Israel publications. There are no suggestions for donations directed towards Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anna Storti<\/a>\u00a0is Assistant Professor in the department. On Oct. 7, 2023, while Israelis were actively being murdered, raped, mutilated, and taken hostage by Hamas-led terrorists, Storti was\u00a0reposting<\/a>\u00a0anti-Israel complaints on X.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2020, Storti\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0\u201cf[***]\u00a0 the usa\u201d and in 2024,\u00a0posted<\/a>, \u201cF[***] these cops. Shame on the admin who call them on their own students\u2026It\u2019s all about Free Palestine\u2026this month and always. Liberation within our lifetimes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She also\u00a0reposted<\/a>\u00a0on X the slogan, \u201cFrom the river to the sea.\u201d The Anti-Defamation League (ADL)\u00a0explains<\/a>\u00a0the meaning of \u201cFrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be free\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

This is a cry for Israel to not exist. It is calling for a Palestinian state that extends from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea \u2013 effectively erasing and destroying the entire Jewish state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Emily Rogers<\/span><\/a>, Secondary Faculty in Duke\u2019s gender studies department, was\u00a0detained<\/a>\u00a0at the UNC anti-Israel encampment in 2024 and\u00a0banned<\/a>\u00a0from that campus. Rogers\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0a local progressive paper, \u201cWe won\u2019t stop till universities disclose and divest\u201d and \u201cWe won\u2019t stop \u2018til all of Palestine is free.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mishana Garschi<\/a>, Postdoctoral Associate in the Duke gender studies program,\u00a0reposted<\/a>\u00a0on X, \u201chaving a phd and being a zionists is nuts, you need to return that damn degree because you clearly lost all sense of critical thought [sic].\u201d She also\u00a0reposted<\/a>, \u201czionism is monstrous [sic]\u201d\u00a0and<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThe Israeli occupiers don\u2019t care about the hostages [sic].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, I\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0The Algemeiner\u00a0<\/em>that\u00a0Frances Hasso<\/a>, Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the same department, excitedly\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0on X, \u201cHAMAS OFFICIALLY DEFEATS ISRAEL!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hasso has repeatedly made social media posts\u00a0using<\/a>\u00a0the antisemitic\u00a0slur<\/a>\u00a0\u201cZio\u201d \u2014 and also\u00a0reposted<\/a>\u00a0on X, \u201cNoone was raped on October 7 [sic].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, Hasso\u00a0reposted<\/a>\u00a0a protest flyer that said in huge print, \u201cZIONISTS OUT!\u201d with accompanying text, \u201cWe have found out from a trusted source that the British Museum is hosting an event \u2018for Israel\u2019 \u2026 It is our duty to confront zionists wherever they appear [sic].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Would Duke University ever allow a professor to remain on staff after reposting: \u201cPALESTINIANS OUT! It is our duty to confront Palestinians wherever they appear\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2021, Hasso\u00a0pledged<\/a>\u00a0to promote the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement against Israel \u201cin the classroom and on campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2024, Hasso convened a Duke conference,\u00a0the Palestine Seminar<\/a>, where 12 other Duke departments and programs participated, including the Provost Initiative on the Middle East, the Department of History, the Department of English, and the Program of Literature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hasso also\u00a0taught<\/a>\u00a0the Duke University Global Palestine course in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

The confidence demonstrated by the Office of the Provost in Frances Hasso, along with support from 11 additional programs and departments, highlights serious concerns about Duke University\u2019s leadership and their ability to identify and combat antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Duke\u00a0history<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0gender studies<\/a>\u00a0departments each presently feature identical glowing reviews of Hasso\u2019s recent book on their websites. These reviews allege that Israel is committing \u201cZionist settler-colonialism in Palestine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Duke University is not merely permitting Hasso to instruct; they are actively endorsing her. It is a disgrace that the institution offers Hasso repeated opportunities to \u201ceducate\u201d students.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, many\u00a0faculty<\/a>\u00a0in Duke\u2019s gender and feminist studies department have signed public, anti-Israel statements.<\/span><\/p>\n

Priscilla Wald<\/a>,\u00a0Ara Wilson<\/a>, and\u00a0Kimberly Lamm<\/a>\u00a0each signed letters supporting various academic boycotts of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anne Allison, Hasso, Charles Piot, Wald, Anne-Maria Makhulu, Jessica Namakkal, Gabriel Rosenberg, Ranjana Khanna, Adriane Lentz-Smith, and Kathi Weeks signed a 2021\u00a0<\/a>statement<\/a>\u00a0declaring, \u201cWe acknowledge our complicity in Israel\u2019s oppression of the Palestinians\u201d and \u201cexpress our solidarity with the Palestinian people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2023, Michael Hardt, Hasso, Rogers, Storti, and Robyn Wiegman endorsed a\u00a0letter<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cScholars Against the War on Palestine,\u201d which demanded an immediate ceasefire, asserting their solidarity with Palestinians. The letter criticized Israel extensively while failing to acknowledge, even once, the violent assault by Hamas on Oct. 7 or the hundreds of hostages held by Hamas-affiliated terrorists at that time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, I\u00a0detailed<\/a>\u00a0years of anti-Israel publications at Duke University Press. As an example, a recent Duke Press publication actually accuses Israelis of viewing Palestinians as rapeable. The author added, Israelis \u201ccarry their rifles as an extension of phallic power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Duke University has permitted an entire academic department and its university press to align against Israel. This is hostile towards the vast majority of American Jews that believe in the existence of a Jewish State. Clearly an investigation is in order.<\/span><\/p>\n
