US President Donald Trump called on Saudi Arabia to\u00a0join the Abraham Accords<\/a>\u00a0and officially recognize Israel while speaking at the Saudi-US Investment Forum in Riyadh on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith the historic Abraham Accords that we\u2019re so proud of, all the momentum was aimed at peace, aimed very successfully,\u201d Trump said, referring to a series of historic US-brokered normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab countries during his first term in office.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been an amazing thing, the Abraham Accords, and it\u2019s my fervent hope, wish, and even my dream that Saudi Arabia \u2014 a place I have such respect for, especially over the last fairly short period of time, what you\u2019ve been able to do \u2014 but will soon be joining the Abraham Accords,\u201d Trump added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump argued that joining the Abraham Accords would be \u201ca tremendous tribute\u201d to Saudi Arabia and that agreeing to recognize Israel is \u201cvery important for the future of the Middle East.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be a special day in the Middle East, with the whole world watching, when Saudi Arabia joins us. And you\u2019ll be greatly honoring me, and you\u2019ll be greatly honoring all of those people that have fought so hard for the Middle East,\u201d Trump stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the first Trump administration from 2017-2021, the White House helped broker the Abraham Accords, a series of\u00a0historic normalization agreements<\/a>\u00a0between Israel and\u00a0several countries in the Arab world: Sudan, Bahrain, Morocco,\u00a0and the United Arab Emirates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since returning to the White House, Trump has vowed to expand on the Abraham Accords, arguing that bolstering the normalization agreements will help foster greater peace and prosperity in the broader Middle East. According to recent reports, however, the US is\u00a0no longer demanding\u00a0Saudi\u00a0<\/span>Arabia normalize ties with<\/a>\u00a0Israel\u00a0<\/span>as a condition for progress on\u00a0civil\u00a0<\/span>nuclear\u00a0<\/span>cooperation\u00a0talks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During his remarks on Tuesday, the US president also lambasted Iran, saying that he plans to exert \u201cmassive, maximum pressure\u201d against Tehran. Trump vowed to \u201cdrive Iranian oil exports to zero\u201d if the White House and Iran cannot successfully broker a deal to place restrictions on Tehran\u2019s nuclear program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf Iran\u2019s leadership rejects this olive branch and continues to attack their neighbors, then we will have no choice but to inflict massive, maximum pressure \u2026 and take all action required to stop the regime from ever having a nuclear weapon. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,\u201d Trump said, vowing to never allow Tehran to threaten the US or its allies \u201cwith terrorism or nuclear attack.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran, the world\u2019s foremost state sponsor of terrorism, maintains\u00a0that its nuclear program is for civilian purposes rather than building weapons. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN\u2019s nuclear watchdog, reported last year that Iran had\u00a0greatly accelerated uranium enrichment\u00a0<\/a>to close to weapons grade at its Fordow site dug into a mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n
