Photo: REUTERS\/Axel Schmidt<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Anti-Israel demonstrators clashed violently with Berlin police officers during a march on Thursday, resulting in injuries and heightened tensions throughout the German capital city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">More than 600 police officers were dispatched to contain the \u201cNakba Day\u201d protest in Berlin\u2019s central Kreuzberg district, where over 50 arrests were made. The demonstrators were recognizing the 77th anniversary of the \u201cnakba,\u201d the Arabic term for \u201ccatastrophe\u201d used by Palestinians and anti-Israel activists to refer to the establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to local law enforcement, approximately 1,100 people took part in the pro-Hamas rally, which also protested against Israel\u2019s military campaign against the Palestinian terrorist group in the Gaza Strip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Demonstrators initially intended to march from S\u00fcdstern Square in the southern part of the capital to the adjacent Neuk\u00f6lln district, but local authorities only allowed the protest to remain stationary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even though a local court had ruled that the anti-Israel protest couldn\u2019t move through the city, demonstrators repeatedly attempted to march through the neighborhood. Photo: REUTERS\/Axel Schmidt<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During the protest, one of the organizers addressed the crowd, declaring, \u201cThe nakba is a continuing campaign of ethnic cleansing that has never stopped.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The demonstration was also marked by antisemitic rhetoric and inflammatory chants, including accusations that the Israeli government and military are \u201cchild murderers, women murderers, baby murderers,\u201d as well as the use of the banned slogan, \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/27\/call-genocide-south-african-jews-blast-countrys-president-chanting-from-river-to-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">From the river to the sea<\/a>, Palestine will be free.\u201d The slogan is popular among anti-Israel activists and has been widely interpreted as a call for the destruction of the Jewish state, which is located between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When police intervened to stop the inflammatory rhetoric, they were met with significant violence from the crowd, who reportedly threw bottles, stones, and other objects, and sprayed officers with red paint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After the incidents, police reported that one officer was pulled into the crowd, forced to the ground, and trampled until he lost consciousness. The 36-year-old officer sustained severe upper body injuries, including a broken arm, and remains hospitalized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe attack on a police officer at the demonstration in Kreuzberg is nothing but a cowardly, brutal act of violence,\u201d Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said in a statement. \u201cAttacks against officers are attacks on law and order and therefore against all of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThose who misuse the right to demonstrate to spread hate, antisemitic incitement, or violence will face the full force of the law,\u201d the German leader added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Pro-Hamas-protest-in-Berlin.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Pro-Palestinian demonstrators during a protest against Israel to mark the 77th anniversary of the \u201cNakba\u201d or catastrophe, in Berlin, Germany, May 15, 2025. Photo: Screenshot<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Local authorities reported that 11 officers and an unspecified number of protesters were injured during the incidents, with the injured demonstrators receiving treatment from the Berlin fire department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The German-Israeli Society (DIG) condemned the violence and hateful rhetoric, urging authorities to reconsider granting permission for such demonstrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOften, these events are not demonstrations for the rights and the legitimate concerns of Palestinians but merely express outright hatred of Israel,\u201d the group said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Germany has\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/24\/germanys-chancellor-anyone-who-incites-antisemitism-must-expect-be-prosecuted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experienced a sharp spike in antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0amid the war in Gaza.
