Photo: REUTERS\/Jonathan Ernst<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0started the week\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/18\/us\/project-esther-heritage-foundation-palestine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">attacking<\/a>\u00a0the Heritage Foundation for a project aimed at combating antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It was poor timing, given the shooting Wednesday night of two staffers of the Israeli embassy in Washington by a gunman shouting \u201cfree Palestine.\u201d Heritage was able to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Heritage\/status\/1925547788588232940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">respond<\/a>: \u201cMany have been questioning why Heritage launched Project Esther, our national strategy to combat antisemitism in the United States. Because antisemitism is leading to Jewish people being assassinated on the streets of our capital, that\u2019s why.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0countered with a news\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/23\/us\/pro-palestinian-movement-embassy-attack.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>\u00a0expressing anxiety that \u201cthe killings also risked painting all pro-Palestinian activists, the vast majority of whom do not engage in violence, with the same brush, which could lead to further repression of their movement.\u201d That\u2019s quite an angle on the murder of Israeli embassy employees in the streets of Washington, that it creates the \u201crisk\u201d of \u201cfurther repression\u201d of the anti-Israel protests that the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0insists on inaccurately describing as pro-Palestinian. You can\u2019t make this stuff up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The original\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0attack on Heritage, breathlessly headlined \u201cThe Group Behind Project 2025 Has a Plan to Crush the Pro-Palestinian Movement,\u201d quoted as an expert \u201cJonathan Jacoby, the national director of the Nexus Project, a watchdog group that works to combat antisemitism and protect open debate.\u201d The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0didn\u2019t say that Nexus got started with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opensocietyfoundations.org\/grants\/past?filter_keyword=Nexus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$75,000 in grants<\/a>\u00a0from the Open Society Foundations, the George and Alexander Soros outfit that also\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/some-anti-israel-protesters-are-paid-soros-rockefeller-funding-activism-hamas-fba26c20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pays anti-Israel protesters<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0article, which appeared on page one of the print paper on Monday, May 20, was particularly strange because it included a passage that described Jewish Voice for Peace as a Jewish organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0reported that the Heritage project \u201chas drawn criticism from many Jewish organizations amid increasing calls for them to push back against the Trump administration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After the introductory reference to \u201cmany Jewish organizations,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0report went on immediately to quote one:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u201cTrump is pulling straight from the authoritarian playbook, using tools of repression first against those organizing for Palestinian rights,\u201d said Stefanie Fox, the executive director of Jewish Voice for Peace. \u201cAnd in so doing, sharpening those tools for use against anyone and everyone who challenges his fascist agenda.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Recent polling has shown the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/02\/12\/vast-majority-us-jews-reject-jewish-voice-peace-other-anti-zionist-groups-polling-data-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overwhelming majority of American Jews reject Jewish Voice for Peace<\/a>. The\u00a0<em>Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/09\/jewish-voice-peaces-extremist-anti-israel-agenda-terror-group-ties-highlighted-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0on a study earlier this year finding the group had a \u201crecord of support for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), an internationally designated terrorist organization with the stated goal of dismantling Israel and replacing it with a Palestinian state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>The Algemeiner<\/i>\u00a0has<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/08\/16\/deeply-traumatizing-jewish-voice-peace-argues-resurfaced-booklet-jews-shouldnt-write-hebrew-liturgy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0previously reported that JVP<\/a>\u00a0argued in a recently resurfaced 2021 booklet that Jews should not write Hebrew liturgy because hearing the language would be \u201cdeeply traumatizing\u201d to Palestinians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A Heritage Foundation staffer, Yehoshua Jason Bedrick, said the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0was \u201csmearing the Heritage Foundation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIf you actually *read* Project Esther, you will find that it\u2019s not the fascist nightmare of the NYT\u2019s fever dreams, but rather a sober and thoughtful effort to address the very difficult problem of foreign terrorist groups and their government sponsors attempting to weaponize our freedoms against us\u2013while preserving our freedoms and respecting constitutional norms,\u201d Bedrick wrote in a Facebook post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Heritage Foundation wants to combat the Hamasniks and the antisemites who are cheering on them and their agenda. The\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0apparently thinks it\u2019s the Heritage Foundation, rather than the Hamasniks, who are the real problem. The sad events of the past week made clear how misguided that is. And it\u2019s just short of unbelievable, and well beyond grotesque, that, rather than ceding the point or just being quiet, the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0is reacting to the shooting by fretting that it might have the unfortunate effect of \u201cfurther\u201d repressing the anti-Israel activists.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><i><strong>Ira Stoll<\/strong> was managing editor of\u00a0<\/i>The Forward<i>\u00a0and North American editor of\u00a0<\/i>The Jerusalem Post<i>.
