Joseph Patrick Neumeyer appeared in federal court in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sunday, where the 28-year-old, dual U.S.-German citizen was charged with threatening to kill U.S. President Donald Trump and to bomb a U.S. embassy branch in Tel Aviv.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel deported Neumeyer, of Colorado, to New York on Saturday, per the U.S. Justice Department. He faces up to\u00a020 years<\/a>\u00a0in prison and up to $250,000 in fines, per the department.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis defendant is charged with planning a devastating attack targeting our embassy in Israel, threatening death to Americans and President Trump\u2019s life,\u201d\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0Pam Bondi, the U.S. attorney general. \u201cThe department will not tolerate such violence and will prosecute this defendant to the fullest extent of the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNeumeyer not only made threats against Americans and U.S. diplomatic missions, but also allegedly attempted to carry out those threats by bringing potentially deadly devices to the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv,\u201d stated Steven Jensen, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington field office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet his arrest carry an unmistakable message,\u201d Jensen stated. \u201cThe FBI and our partners will aggressively pursue those who attempt to harm U.S. citizens and interests abroad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The U.S. government alleges that on May 19\u2014in the month after he arrived in Israel\u2014Neumeyer wrote, \u201cJoin me this afternoon in Tel Aviv<\/span>
\nand \u201cWe are burning down the U.S. embassy\u201d on Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJoin me as I burn down the embassy in Tel Aviv.\u00a0 Death to America. Death to Americans,\u201d he wrote, directing an expletive at \u201cthe west,\u201d per the criminal complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n

On May 19, Neumeyer spat on a guard outside the U.S. embassy branch artist in Tel Aviv but was able to flee, while yelling profanities, as the guard sought to detain him. After a guard grabbed him by the backpack, Neumeyer managed to break free and escape, leaving the\u00a0backpack<\/a>\u00a0behind, per the complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLaw enforcement recovered from Neumeyer\u2019s backpack several bottles that had been turned into improvised incendiary devices, commonly known as \u2018Molotov cocktails,\u2019\u201d per the Justice Department. \u201cAuthorities confirmed the presence of flammable fluid in the bottles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The complaint described a guard noticing a \u201cstrong odor of \u2018pure\u2019 alcohol emanating from the backpack\u201d and \u201ca bottle with black cloth protruding from its neck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Neumeyer\u2019s social-media accounts allegedly had \u201cthreatening posts that, among other things, called for the assassination of President Donald J. Trump,\u201d according to the department, which said that law enforcement tracked him to his hotel and arrested him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the screen captures detailed in the criminal complaint are also a threat against billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and a reference to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.<\/span><\/p>\n
