Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/23\/opinion\/harvard-university-trump-administration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard Derangement Syndrome<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/em>\u201d is the headline that the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0put over a 4,000-word article by Steven Pinker that it recently published. Pinker\u2019s point is that \u201cthe invective now being aimed at Harvard has become unhinged.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yet if anyone has \u201cbecome unhinged,\u201d it is Pinker and his editors at the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>, who look silly in their eagerness to minimize Harvard\u2019s antisemitism problem. Pinker calls it Harvard\u2019s \u201calleged antisemitism,\u201d which gives you a flavor of just how detached from reality the overall article is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Don\u2019t take my word for it. Here is a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/28\/us\/politics\/harvard-university-trump-administration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White House Memo<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0from Maggie Haberman: \u201cOn substance, there are several Republicans and Democrats who share Mr. Trump\u2019s view that Harvard and other major colleges are long overdue in addressing cultural issues. They welcome a focus on the antisemitism that was on display at some of the campus protests against Israel\u2019s response to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack.\u201d Haberman writes \u201cantisemitism,\u201d not \u201calleged antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Here is a staff\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/16\/opinion\/harvard-university-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">editorial<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>: \u201cSome universities have failed to stand up to antisemitism.\u201d Not \u201calleged antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Here is an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/president\/news\/2024\/the-antisemitic-cartoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>email to the Harvard community<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0from Harvard\u2019s own president, Alan Garber, about a cartoon posted to social media by student and faculty anti-Israel groups: \u201cThe Antisemitic Cartoon.\u201d Not \u201callegedly antisemitic.\u201d Garber called it \u201cflagrantly antisemitic.\u201d The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/jewishreviewofbooks.com\/american-jewry\/15821\/harvard-sncc-and-an-antisemitic-cartoon\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">image<\/a>\u00a0was of a hand with a star of David and a dollar sign holding nooses around the necks of Gamal Abdel Nasser and Muhammad Ali.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pinker goes on to write, \u201cThough the 300-page antisemitism report reviews every instance it could find in the past century, down to the last graffito and social media post, it cited no expressions of a goal to \u2018destroy the Jews,\u2019 let alone signs that it was the \u2018dominant view on campus.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The antisemitism report was extensive, but it made no pretense of being either exhaustive or comprehensive. And even so, Pinker\u2019s straw-man standard of a publicly expressed goal to destroy the Jews being the dominant view on campus is ridiculous. There were student groups cheering on the Oct\/ 7 terrorist attack by Hamas as a justified act of liberation and resistance. There were mobs chanting \u201cfrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be free\u201d and \u201cintifada, intifada, globalize the intifada.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What does Pinker imagine is going to happen to the Jews in such a scenario? If he thinks Hamas is going to let the Jews live in peace, he\u2019s deluding himself. The reason that members of Congress were asking then-Harvard president Claudine Gay questions about whether it was acceptable to call for the genocide of Jews on the Harvard campus wasn\u2019t that the members of Congress were fantasizing; it was that the Jewish students at Harvard at the time and their allies perceived it as an ongoing problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pinker also writes, \u201cI have experienced no antisemitism in my two decades at Harvard, and nor have other prominent Jewish faculty members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Did Pinker not see the cartoon that Garber called \u201cflagrantly antisemitic?\u201d Did he not attend the commencement last year when the speaker and honorary degree recipient \u201cdelivered off-the-cuff comments that appeared to echo traditional conspiracy theories about Jews, money, and power,\u201d according to the report of Harvard\u2019s own task force on antisemitism and anti-Israel bias, which described them as \u201cseemingly antisemitic remarks?\u201d Does he not read the\u00a0<em>Crimson<\/em>\u00a0or watch social media accounts of protests with students chanting slogans such as \u201cWe don\u2019t want no Zionists here?\u201d If Pinker really hasn\u2019t experienced any antisemitism, he must not get out much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And anyway, what kind of allyship is this by Pinker to students, faculty, and staff who have been targeted by antisemitism? After a spate of campus rapes, would the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0publish a piece from a professor who feels an appropriate response is asserting, \u2018I have taught on this campus for 20 years and have never once been raped?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Writing in\u00a0<em>National Review<\/em>, Stanley Kurtz of the Ethics and Public Policy Center\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/harvard-is-illegitimate-a-reply-to-steven-pinker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">observes<\/a>, \u201cPinker is underplaying the problems.\u201d Kurtz sure has that correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pinker teaches psychology, so he\u2019s an expert. But it may not be only Harvard\u2019s critics suffering from what Pinker calls \u201cHarvard Derangement Syndrome.\u201d Professor Pinker seems to have come down with a variant of it himself \u2014 a variety that manifests itself by writing\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0opinion pieces that minimize genuine problems. That doesn\u2019t help improve the situation for those Harvard Jews who have been less lucky than Pinker or who are more perceptive than he is in understanding what is happening around them.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><i><strong>Ira Stoll<\/strong> was managing editor of\u00a0<\/i>The Forward<i>\u00a0and North American editor of\u00a0<\/i>The Jerusalem Post<i>.
