Photo: REUTERS\/Antony Paone<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A French rabbi was attacked on Friday for the second time in a week, he told Reuters, reflecting a broad rise in hate crimes across France that has included high-profile antisemitic assaults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Elie Lemmel said he was sitting at a cafe in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine on Friday when he was hit in the head by a chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI found myself on the ground, I immediately felt blood flowing,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He was stunned and unsure what exactly had happened, he said, initially thinking something must have fallen from a window or roof, before it occurred to him he had been attacked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cUnfortunately, given my beard and my kippah, I suspected that was probably why, and it\u2019s such a shame,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Friday\u2019s incident follows another in the town of Deauville in Normandy last week, when Lemmel said he was punched in the stomach by an unknown assailant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Lemmel said he was used to \u201cnot-so-friendly looks, some unpleasant words, people passing by, spitting on the ground,\u201d but had never been physically assaulted before the two attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The prosecutor\u2019s office in Nanterre said it had opened an investigation into the Neuilly attack for violence aggravated by the fact that it was committed on religious grounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A man being held for questioning at the Neuilly-sur-Seine police station underwent a psychiatric examination that required his hospitalization, it said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to German-language identity documents found in his possession, the 28-year-old man was born in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis act sickens us,\u201d former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal wrote on X regarding Friday\u2019s incident involving Lemmel. \u201cAntisemitism, like all forms of hatred, is a deadly poison for our society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last week, five Jewish institutions were sprayed with green paint in Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAttacking a person because of their faith is a shame. The increase in anti-religious acts requires the mobilization of everyone,\u201d Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said on X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">France has seen a rise in hate crimes. Last year, police recorded an 11% rise in racist, xenophobic or antireligious crimes, according to official data published in March.
