Credit: Benny Polatseck\/Mayoral Photography Office.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, signed an executive order at Tribeca Synagogue in Manhattan on Sunday recognizing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s working definition of Jew-hatred on behalf of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe City of New York recognizes, and city agencies shall consider as appropriate, the IHRA working definition of antisemitism, as adopted on May 26, 2016, as well as the 11 contemporary examples,\u201d per the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/home\/downloads\/pdf\/executive-orders\/2025\/eo-52.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">order<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cCity agencies are encouraged to use these materials as appropriate to facilitate constructive discourse, further understanding and enable a more thoughtful response to harmful antisemitic behavior,\u201d it adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The contemporary\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/holocaustremembrance.com\/resources\/working-definition-antisemitism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">examples<\/a>\u00a0that are part of the working definition include \u201cdenying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor\u201d and \u201cholding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the State of Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Adams signed the order alongside Phil McGraw (\u201cDr. Phil\u201d). The two had a conversation at the synagogue, which will air on June 17 on the \u201cDr. Phil Primetime\u201d show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAntisemitism is a vile disease that\u2019s been spreading across our nation and our city,\u201d the mayor stated. \u201cWhat\u2019s worse, since Hamas\u2019s terror attacks on Oct. 7, 2023, we have seen this hateful rhetoric become normalized on our campuses, in our communities and online as antisemitic propaganda far too often masquerades as \u2018activism.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhen Jewish New Yorkers make up 11% of the population but more than half of all hate crimes, we know this moment demands bold, decisive action to crack down on anti-Jewish hatred,\u201d the mayor stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He called the executive order a \u201clandmark\u201d move to \u201cadopt an internationally recognized definition of antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/me.jnsi.org\/uploads\/2025\/06\/54576562084_8eca4af2af_o.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>New York City Mayor Eric Adams signs an executive order and proposes legislation to codify into law the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, Tribeca Synagogue, New York, N.Y., June 8, 2025. Credit: Benny Polatseck\/Mayoral Photography Office.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBut we must go further,\u201d he said. \u201cI am calling on the City Council to join this commitment to target antisemitism everywhere it exists and immediately pass a bill to codify this definition into law. It\u2019s time we all come together to eradicate this hatred from our city, once and for all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe will no longer tolerate denying the Jewish community the right to self-determination, using code words to demean Jewish New Yorkers, or targeting our community while claiming to target Zionists,\u201d stated Moshe Davis, executive director of the Mayor\u2019s Office to Combat Antisemitism. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen the violence this breeds. Antisemitism has no place in our schools, our government or our city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yehuda Kaploun, a rabbi and U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s nominee for U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, welcomed the \u201cimportant step by New York City.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt is crucial for all cities, states and countries to adopt these policies and build on the requirements outlined in IHRA\u2019s language,\u201d he stated. \u201cAntisemitism must be a bipartisan issue and condemned by all people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAntisemitic incidents on U.S. soil are at unprecedented levels\u2014the highest in our lifetime,\u201d stated Kenneth Marcus, founder and chairman of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law and a former U.S. assistant secretary of education for civil rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe strongly commend Mayor Eric Adams for his leadership and for incorporating the IHRA definition of antisemitism into his new executive order,\u201d Marcus stated. \u201cThis frightening trend, which is getting more and more violent by the day, demands urgent and decisive action, starting with our government leaders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIHRA provides a clear framework for law enforcement, educators and all local officials to properly identify and address antisemitism in all its forms,\u201d he added. \u201cMayor Adams\u2019 example should be followed nationwide.
