Photo: Yuki Iwamura\/Pool via REUTERS<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Following Zohran Mamdani\u2019s stunning victory in New York City\u2019s Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, local Jewish leaders are expressing deep apprehension about their future status in a city facing the prospect of being led by a man who has been accused of antisemitism and&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/02\/27\/contender-in-nyc-mayoral-race-has-extensive-anti-israel-trackrecord\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made anti-Israel activism a cornerstone<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;of his political career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mamdani, the 33\u2011year\u2011old state assemblymember and proud democratic socialist, defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other candidates in a lopsided first\u2011round win in the city\u2019s Democratic primary for mayor, notching approximately 43.5 percent of first\u2011choice votes compared to Cuomo\u2019s 36.4 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Voters in New York City rank their choices in order of their preference. While Mamdani declared victory and Cuomo conceded defeat, the race\u2019s ultimate outcome will technically be&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\">decided when every vote is tallied, taking into account the ranked choice count. Mamdani\u2019s victory is all but assured.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Some observers have speculated that Mamdani\u2019s win over an older, high-profile Democrat signifies growing frustration with the party\u2019s status quo and represents a generational change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The election results have also alarmed members of the local Jewish community, who&nbsp;expressed deep concern over his&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/03\/19\/nyc-mayoral-contender-cites-hamas-produced-casualty-figures-while-condemning-israel-restarting-gaza-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">past criticism of Israel and defense<\/a>&nbsp;of antisemitic rhetoric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMamdani\u2019s election is the greatest existential threat to a metropolitan Jewish population since the election of the notorious antisemite Karl Lueger in Vienna,\u201d Rabbi Marc Schneier, one of the most prominent Jewish leaders in New York City, said in a statement. \u201cJewish leaders must come together as a united force to prevent a mass Jewish Exodus from New York City.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Avital Chizhik-Goldschmidt, who along with her husband Rabbi Benjamin Goldschmidt co-founded the Altneu, an Orthodox synagogue on Manhattan\u2019s Upper East Side, suggested that Mamdani\u2019s political ascendance indicates&nbsp;that antisemitism might actually be a political \u201casset\u201d these days.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cPerhaps soft antisemitism is not a liability for a NYC politician. It\u2019s an asset,\u201d Chizhik-Goldschmidt&nbsp;wrote. \u201cPerhaps New York City is not the city we thought it was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Former New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who later founded the organization Americans Against Antisemitism, similarly&nbsp;repudiated Mamdani and encouraged New Yorkers to consolidate behind a single candidate to oppose the presumptive Democratic nominee in the general election in November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMamdani has won the Democratic primary,\u201d he said in a video posted to social media. \u201cIt is pathetic, it is sick, it is painful for people who care about the future of New York and in particular the Jewish community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hikind added in a written post accompanying the video:&nbsp;\u201cNYC must unite to defeat the dangerous antisemite Mamdani.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A little-known politician before this year\u2019s primary campaign, Mamdani is an outspoken supporter of the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/09\/nyc-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-defends-bds-support-vows-arrest-netanyahu-synagogue-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement<\/a>, which seeks to isolate Israel from the international community as a step toward its eventual elimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mamdani has also repeatedly&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/05\/zohran-mamdani-refuses-say-israel-has-right-exist-jewish-state-nyc-mayoral-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">refused to recognize Israel\u2019s right to exist<\/a>&nbsp;as a Jewish state, falsely suggesting the country does not offer \u201cequal rights\u201d for all its citizens, and promised to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Most recently, Mamdani defended the phrase \u201cglobalize the intifada\u201d\u2014 which references previous periods of sustained Palestinian terrorism against Jews and Israels and has been widely interpreted as a call to expand political violence \u2014 by invoking the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising during World War II. In response,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/18\/us-holocaust-museum-slams-zohran-mamdani-invoking-warsaw-ghetto-uprising-justify-globalize-intifada-chant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the US Holocaust Memorial Museum repudiated<\/a>&nbsp;the mayoral candidate, calling his comments \u201coutrageous and especially offensive to [Holocaust] survivors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The same week, an old X\/Twitter post from 2015 by Mamdani resurfaced online showing him appearing to threaten that a \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/19\/zohran-mamdani-warned-third-intifada-looms-2015-wave-palestinian-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">third intifada<\/a>\u201d was coming.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"content clear\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<div class=\"content clear\">\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">New York City, which is home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, has experienced a major spike in antisemitic incidents since Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7, 2023, invasion of southern Israel, with police data showing&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/25\/new-york-city-jews-sound-alarm-anti-israel-socialist-zohran-mamdani-wins-democratic-mayoral-primary\/Jews%20were%20targeted%20in%20the%20majority%20of%20hate%20crimes%20perpetrated%20in%20New%20York%20City%20last%20yea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jews were targeted in the majority of hate crimes<\/a>&nbsp;perpetrated in New York City last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Concern among Jewish leaders over Mamdani\u2019s victory amid rising antisemitism extended well beyond New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/12\/bosnian-hotel-cancels-european-rabbi-conference-govt-minister-calls-israel-genocidal-entity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt<\/a>, president of the Conference of European Rabbis,&nbsp;warned that Mamdani\u2019s victory represents a well-known pattern that starts with hatred of Israel and ends with violence targeting Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">\u201cZohran Mamdani\u2019s win in&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">#NYC<\/span><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">&nbsp;feels deeply familiar to&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">#Europe\u2019<\/span><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">s&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">#Jewish<\/span><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">&nbsp;community. We\u2019ve seen where radical politics \u2014 especially cloaked in \u2018justice\u2019 rhetoric \u2014 can lead. It starts with slogans. It ends with violence,\u201d Goldschmidt, the former chief rabbi of Moscow, posted on social media.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn Europe, we\u2019ve learned the hard way: when far-left ideologues and radical Islamists turn Israel into a symbol of absolute evil, it quickly becomes a weapon \u2014 not against a state, but against Jews. \u2018Anti-Zionism\u2019 becomes the mask. Exclusion and incitement follow,\u201d the rabbi continued. \u201cThis isn\u2019t about legitimate critique of Israeli policy. It\u2019s about obsession.
