Photo: Ron Adar \/ SOPA Images via Reuters Connect<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zohran Mamdani, the State Assemblyman and Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, was dealt another\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/08\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-won-most-votes-of-a-candidate-nyc-primary-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reason\u00a0<\/a>to celebrate this week, when it was revealed that the young socialist had won the most votes ever in a New York City primary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While many of Mamdani\u2019s progressive comrades are reveling in their candidate\u2019s electoral success, his commanding victory on June 24 is leaving establishment Democrats concerned, confused, and in shock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yet for those who have kept a discerning eye on the left-wing trajectory of the Democratic Party, the ascendance of a politician such as Mamdani came as no surprise, and was in fact entirely predictable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What first began in 2019 as an unwillingness to disassociate from an energized leftist cohort of lawmakers entering Congress, has now evolved into a troubling pattern of Democrats failing to reject candidates espousing dangerous anti-American and antisemitic positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mamdani, the presumptive next mayor of New York City, is transparent about his hatred for Israel, and his tolerance of violent threats against Jews. His election poses a direct threat to the safety and security of Jewish residents in America\u2019s largest city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Thirty-six hours following the October 7 massacre, the lawmaker, in a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZohranKMamdani\/status\/1711093032907321525?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement\u00a0<\/a>on X, blamed the \u201congoing violence\u201d on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel\u2019s government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He has made no attempts to scrub his social media of his depraved posts, which include flipping the middle\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZohranKMamdani\/status\/1273410176003997697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finger<\/a>\u00a0at a Christopher Columbus statue, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZohranKMamdani\/status\/1261381009578188800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calling\u00a0<\/a>Jew-hating Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) his hero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Despite being given repeated opportunities to condemn the phrase \u201cGlobalize the Intifada,\u201d a term used as a rallying cry to murder Jews, Mamdani\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ggV2SeiGrVw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defends<\/a>\u00a0its use, and often reverts to speaking about his broader objective to root out \u201call bigotry.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For their part, New York\u2019s Democratic Congressional delegation is buckling under the progressive weight of their party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">With the exception of Long Island Congresswoman Laura Gillen (D-NY), who said that Socialist Mamdani is\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/gillen.house.gov\/media\/in-the-news\/time-amid-mamdanis-success-centrist-democrat-warns-her-party-not-misread-moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201ctoo extreme<\/a>\u201d\u00a0to lead New York City, the state\u2019s liberal lawmakers are refusing to rule out endorsing the socialist in the general election, while delivering varying statements on Mamdani\u2019s defense of the \u201cGlobalize the Intifada\u201d phrase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When pressed to repudiate Mamdani\u2019s defense of the violent expression, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) stated in an interview on MSNBC that Mamdani should \u201cclarify his position\u201d on the use of the term, which he<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/msnbc\/watch\/jeffries-mamdani-must-clarify-his-position-on-the-use-of-the-phrase-globalize-the-intifada-242475077969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0admits<\/a>\u00a0is \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The State\u2019s senior Senator, Chuck Schumer, who will likely face a primary challenge from the left when he is up for reelection in 2028, carefully curated his words and<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2025\/07\/senate-democrats-globalize-the-intifada-slogan-mamdani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0condemned<\/a>\u00a0the phrase without mentioning Mamdani directly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Schumer\u2019s Democratic colleague, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand\u2019s, efforts to<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/5373603-gillibrand-calls-for-mamdani-to-denounce-intifada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0denounce<\/a>\u00a0Mamdani for failing to discredit \u201cGlobalize the Intifada\u201d was soon eclipsed by the Junior Senator walking back her harsh words and apologizing to the mayoral nominee for saying in that same<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/story\/call-your-senator-sen-gillibrand-on-trumps-big-beautiful-betrayal-mamdanis-victory-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0that Mamdani had made references to<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/07\/01\/kirsten-gillibrand-zohran-mamdani-00436031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0\u201cglobal jihad.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres, who\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6375061943112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">objects<\/a>\u00a0to the jihadi slogan, is tempering any distancing from Mamdani and saying that he is \u201ccommitted to a working relationship with him.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Indeed, once radicals like Omar or Mamdani gain power, Democrats embark on a roadmap of expressing displeasure with some of their views, while simultaneously employing political jargon<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KathyHochul\/status\/1937722966470721783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0centering<\/a>\u00a0on \u201cengagement,\u201d \u201cdiscussion,\u201d and \u201cconversation,\u201d as if Mamdani\u2019s fanatical positions emanate from a sincere misreading of the issues rather than being anchored to a deeply held anti-American worldview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Americans were clued into this strategy years ago, when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) agreed to a 2019\u00a0<i>Rolling Stone<\/i>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-pictures\/women-shaping-future-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-pelosi-ashley-graham-804084\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photo\u00a0<\/a>shoot alongside members of the new insurgent wing of the party, including Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) and Ilhan Omar (MN).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Democrats weren\u2019t about to reject this new faction of disruptors and leftist ideologues; they were going to lean in and learn from them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As such, in the coming weeks, New Yorkers can expect more Democratic officials to follow the<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HKeNGT1JvQM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0lead<\/a>\u00a0of New York Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jerry Nadler, both of whom have endorsed<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/25\/nyregion\/nadler-endorse-mamdani.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Mamdani<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It\u2019s worth noting that Jeffries has officially supported anti-Israel figures in the past, with the Minority Leader<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/2024\/03\/28\/first-on-ny1--bowman-receives-formal-endorsement-of-jeffries--dem-house-leaders-in-re-election-bid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0formally\u00a0<\/a>backing disgraced former Congressman Jamaal Bowman during last year\u2019s Democratic primary in New York\u2019s 16th Congressional District.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Combined with the actions of major unions, such as the United Federation of Teachers (UFT),<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UFT\/status\/1942702842461991118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0announcing\u00a0<\/a>their endorsement of Mamdani earlier this week, it\u2019s hard to envision a scenario under which Democrats launch a serious counterweight to Mamdani\u2019s threatening candidacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And while those who live outside the city\u2019s liberal ecosystem are quick to indicate that a nominee as radical as Mamdani could never rise to power in their region, most Democrats dominating the national political landscape harbor little will to wrest control away from radicals in their party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Senior Editor of\u00a0<i>Commentary<\/i>\u00a0Magazine, Seth Mandel, recently\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commentary.org\/seth-mandel\/succession-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote\u00a0<\/a>about Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Andy Kim\u2019s (D-NJ) departure from the pro-Jewish sympathies of their predecessors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As Mandel notes, over the last year, Sens. Murphy and Kim<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kim.senate.gov\/senator-kim-statement-on-prioritizing-enduring-peace-and-security-for-israeli-and-palestinian-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0both<\/a><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/ctnewsjunkie.com\/2024\/11\/22\/murphy-votes-to-block-sale-of-offensive-weapons-to-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0voted<\/a>\u00a0to block arms sales to Israel, just as the Jewish State was battling Iran\u2019s terrorist proxies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Murphy has also praised Mamdani,<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/25\/politics\/zohran-mamdani-reaction-national-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0calling<\/a>\u00a0him a \u201cdynamic\u201d and \u201cnew voice.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Their hostility towards Israel may not present in the same dramatic fashion as Mamdani\u2019s \u2014 but\u00a0their objective conveys a similar desire to complete the progressive sea change in the Democratic Party, albeit through the more palatable and cultured Congressional process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After years of accommodating anti-Israel politicians, Mamdani\u2019s candidacy is an unsettling testament to the consequences of indifference, and that hard-left antisemitic politicians may no longer be outliers, but reflect a frightening and new normal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><i><strong>Irit Tratt<\/strong> is a writer who resides in New York.
