French Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot insisted on Friday that President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s push to recognize a Palestinian state defies Hamas\u2019s interests \u2014 even as the terrorist group welcomed the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHamas has consistently rejected the two-state solution. By recognizing Palestine, France is rejecting the stance of this terrorist organization and affirming its support for peace over war,\u201d the top French diplomat said in a post on X.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Hamas praised France\u2019s latest announcement, calling it \u201ca positive step in the right direction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

France\u2019s initiative is part of \u201ca political development that reflects growing international conviction in the justice of the Palestinian cause and the failure of the Israeli occupation to distort facts or suppress the will of free nations,\u201d said the Palestinian terrorist group, which has ruled Gaza for nearly two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamas also said that such international steps \u201crepresent political and moral pressure\u201d on Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Macron announced that France will recognize a Palestinian state and issue a formal statement at the United Nations General Assembly in September as part of its \u201ccommitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and to bring relief to the civilian population,\u201d the French leader said in a post on X.<\/span><\/p>\n

Macron called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages still held by Hamas, and\u00a0increased humanitarian aid for Gaza<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also stressed the need to demilitarize the Iran-backed terrorist group, rebuild the war-torn enclave, and create a Palestinian state that\u00a0recognizes Israel and ensures regional security<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe French people want peace in the Middle East. It is our responsibility \u2014 as French citizens, alongside Israelis, Palestinians, and our European and international partners \u2014 to prove that peace is possible,\u201d the French leader wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, despite Macron\u2019s continued efforts, his controversial diplomatic initiative to recognize a Palestinian state faces widespread public opposition,\u00a0with nearly 80 percent of French citizens rejecting the move<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A recent survey conducted by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) on behalf of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF) \u2014 the main representative body of French Jews \u2014 found that 78 percent of respondents opposed a \u201chasty, immediate, and unconditional recognition of a Palestinian state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to IFOP\u2019s survey, nearly half of French people (47 percent) believe that recognition of a Palestinian state should only be considered after the release of the remaining hostages captured by Hamas during the group\u2019s invasion of southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

The survey also revealed deep concerns about the consequences of such a premature recognition, with 51 percent of respondents\u00a0fearing a resurgence of antisemitism in France<\/a>\u00a0and 50 percent believing it could strengthen Hamas\u2019s position in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n

France\u2019s policy move comes after Spain, Norway, Ireland, and Slovenia\u00a0officially recognized a Palestinian state last year<\/a>, claiming that such a move would contribute to fostering a two-state solution and promote lasting peace in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas praised France\u2019s decision, calling it a \u201cvictory for the Palestinian cause.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis reflects France\u2019s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights to their land and their homeland,\u201d Abbas said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned France\u2019s announcement, describing it as a \u201creward for terrorism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSuch a move \u2026 risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became,\u201d the Israeli leader said in a post on X.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA Palestinian state in these conditions would be a launch pad to annihilate Israel \u2014 not to live in peace beside it. Let\u2019s be clear: the Palestinians do not seek a state alongside Israel. They seek a state instead of Israel,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We strongly condemn President Macron\u2019s decision to recognize a Palestinian state next to Tel Aviv in the wake of the October\u202f7 massacre. Such a move rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became.<\/strong><\/p>\n
