shortly after\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/08\/08\/israel-approves-plan-take-control-gaza-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Israeli security cabinet approved<\/a>\u00a0Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s plan to expand operations in northern Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe federal government will, until further notice, withhold approval for the export of any military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip,\u201d German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a statement on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Merz argued that Israel\u2019s decision\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/08\/06\/israeli-military-chief-opposes-gaza-war-expansion-raising-pressure-netanyahu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to escalate its military campaign<\/a>\u00a0against the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas \u201cmakes it increasingly difficult\u201d for Berlin to pursue its \u201chighest priorities\u201d of securing the release of the remaining Israeli hostages and achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIsrael has every right to defend itself against Hamas terrorism,\u201d the German leader said. \u201cDisarming Hamas is essential \u2014 there can be no place for Hamas in Gaza\u2019s future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, Merz warned that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/08\/07\/netanyahu-says-israel-intends-take-full-temporary-control-gaza-hostage-families-organize-flotilla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel\u2019s new offensive<\/a> \u201cbears an even greater responsibility for ensuring the population\u2019s needs are met.\u201d He also expressed \u201cdeep concern about the style=\"color: #000080;\">On Friday, the Israeli security cabinet overwhelmingly approved Netanyahu\u2019s plan to defeat Hamas, which includes taking control of Gaza City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a press release, the Prime Minister\u2019s Office announced that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will prepare to \u201ctake control of Gaza City, while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside the combat zones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shortly after the announcement, Merz also called on Israel to take \u201ccomprehensive and sustainable measures\u201d to improve\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/08\/01\/un-data-nearly-90-percent-gaza-aid-intercepted-before-reaching-intended-recipients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the humanitarian situation in Gaza<\/a>, while urging the country to avoid any steps toward annexing the West Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to a report by\u00a0<em>Politico<\/em>, Germany\u2019s decision to freeze arms exports that could potentially be used in Gaza would not apply to defense systems like missile defense or naval equipment and may only affect new contracts, leaving deliveries from previous agreements unaffected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Netanyahu vehemently condemned Germany\u2019s decision, stressing that Israel\u2019s objective is not to occupy Gaza but to free it from Hamas and pave the way for a peaceful and stable Arab government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cInstead of supporting Israel\u2019s just war against Hamas, which carried out the most horrific attack against the Jewish people since the Holocaust, Germany is rewarding Hamas terrorism by embargoing arms to Israel,\u201d Netanyahu\u2019s office said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The local Jewish community in Germany has also sharply criticized the government\u2019s decision to halt military equipment shipments to Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe German government\u2019s decision represents a victory for Hamas in the global propaganda war,\u201d Volker Beck, [resident of the German-Israeli Society (DIG), said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHamas still retains military capabilities,\u201d he continued. \u201cHow does the German government plan to disarm Hamas without resorting to force?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Remko Leemhuis, director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) in Berlin, also condemned the government\u2019s decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cRather than withholding essential materials from Israel, the German government should employ all available economic and political tools to intensify pressure on Hamas and its main supporters, including Iran,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran has long provided arms, funding, and training to Hamas, which has ruled Gaza for nearly two decades after Israel withdrew from the enclave in 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background:
