Credit: Courtesy.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">George Washington University, an urban campus in Washington, D.C., with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gwhillel.org\/copy-of-who-we-are\">some 4,500<\/a>\u00a0Jewish students, violated federal civil rights law in its \u201cdeliberate indifference\u201d to antisemitic incidents on campus that were \u201cobjectively offensive, severe and pervasive,\u201d the U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The private school ignored a \u201chostile educational environment for Jewish, American-Israeli and Israeli students and faculty,\u201d the Trump administration\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-finds-george-washington-university-deliberately-indifferent-antisemitic\">said<\/a>. \u201cGW took no meaningful action and was instead deliberately indifferent to the complaints it received, the misconduct that occurred and the harms that were suffered by its Jewish and Israeli students and faculty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Justice Department, which reportedly sought a settlement with University of California, Los Angeles\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/university-of-california-says-trump-admins-1b-settlement-offer-would-completely-devastate-it\/\">worth $1 billion<\/a>, said it will \u201cseek immediate remediation with GW for its civil rights violations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cEvery student has the right to equal educational opportunities without fear of harassment or abuse,\u201d\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-finds-george-washington-university-deliberately-indifferent-antisemitic\">stated<\/a>\u00a0Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant U.S. attorney general. \u201cNo one is above the law, and universities that promulgate antisemitic discrimination will face legal consequences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">GW is \u201cone of the most active and rapidly growing Jewish campus communities in North America,\u201d according to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hillel.org\/college\/george-washington-university\/\">Hillel International<\/a>. The Hillel on campus, which debuted a new building in 2021, was founded in the 1930s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a letter to Ellen Granberg, the GW president, Dhillon wrote that \u201cthe antisemitic, hate-based misconduct by GW students directed at Jewish GW students, faculty and employees was, in a word, shocking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Justice Department found \u201cnumerous\u201d cases, in which protesters harassed, threatened or attacked Jewish students. \u201cThe behavior was demonstrably abhorrent, immoral and, most importantly, illegal,\u201d Dhillon wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The letter noted the antisemitic \u201cencampment\u201d at the private school and other disruptions in April and May 2024 that took place \u201cduring final examinations and graduation ceremonies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe purpose of the agitators\u2019 efforts was to frighten, intimidate and deny Jewish, Israeli and American-Israeli students free and unfettered access to GW\u2019s educational environment. This is the definition of hostility and a \u2018hostile environment,\u2019\u201d Dhillon wrote. \u201cTo be clear, Jewish students were afraid to attend class, to be observed or, worse, to be \u2018caught\u2019 and perhaps physically beaten on GW\u2019s campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">GW police officers either ignored attacks on Jewish students or told the latter to leave the area, per the Justice Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jewish students, parents and alumni contacted GW, including at least eight complaints alleging anti-Jewish bias between April 25 and May 1, 2024, but the Justice Department said that its probe revealed that \u201cGW took no meaningful action and instead was deliberately indifferent to the hostile educational environment on its campus in violation of Title VI.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Under Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights act, it is illegal to discriminate based on shared characteristics, including national origin and religion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Justice Department \u201cintends to proceed with enforcement of this important federal civil rights law unless resolution of this matter is reached in the near future,\u201d Dhillon wrote. \u201cThe department therefore offers GW the opportunity to enter into a voluntary resolution agreement to ensure immediate remediation of these issues and related reforms to prevent the recurrence of discrimination, harassment and abuse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shannon McClendon, executive director of media relations at GW, told JNS that the school is reviewing the Justice Department\u2019s letter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cGW condemns antisemitism, which has absolutely no place on our campuses or in a civil and humane society,\u201d McClendon told JNS. \u201cOur actions clearly demonstrate our commitment to addressing antisemitic actions and promoting an inclusive campus environment by upholding a safe, respectful and accountable environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">GW took \u201cappropriate action under university policy and the law to hold individuals or organizations accountable\u201d and has \u201cworked diligently with members of GW\u2019s Jewish community, as well as Jewish community organizations, city and federal authorities to protect the GW community from antisemitism,\u201d McClendon said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe remain committed to working with them to ensure every student has the right to equal educational opportunities without fear of harassment or abuse,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rabbi Levi Shemtov, executive vice president of American Friends of Lubavitch (Chabad) and founder of the Chabad at GW, told JNS that the university hasn\u2019t handled Jew-hatred on its campus very well since Oct. 7, but \u201cthere are some improvements that are being made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shemtov hopes that the university can resolve things with the federal government \u201cwithout enforcement, but if they don\u2019t, then it seems enforcement is coming,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Chabad rabbi also thinks that there are \u201cmany problematic professors, including some who are Jewish\u201d at GW who \u201cliterally make the lives of Jewish and pro-Israel students specifically miserable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cGW is a wonderful place. It\u2019s going through a difficult period.
