Photo: Francois Nadeau \/ Hans Lucas via Reuters Connect<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Organizers of Montreal\u2019s 2025 Pride Parade reversed their decision to exclude two Jewish groups from the event on Sunday and apologized for banning their participation after receiving widespread condemnation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/fiertemontreal.com\/en\/news\/toutes-les-communautes-sont-invitees-a-participer-aux-festivites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday, organizers expressed remorse \u201cto the Jewish communities and specially to Jewish members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community\u201d for excluding them from the parade, which marks the conclusion of The Fiert\u00e9 Montr\u00e9al Festival that started on July 31.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cFiert\u00e9 Montr\u00e9al has always stood firmly against all forms of violence inflicted on marginalized populations or groups, including antisemitism, and remains committed to doing so,\u201d said Marlot Marleau, president of the Fiert\u00e9 Montr\u00e9al Festival. \u201cAs 2SLGBTQIA+ rights continue to erode around the world, we have a responsibility to provide an inclusive and safe gathering space for all participants, regardless of their religious or cultural background. This is a commitment we will continue to uphold in collaboration with all organizations taking part in our events.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ga\u2019ava (which in Hebrew means \u201cpride\u201d) is Canada\u2019s oldest and largest Jewish LGBTQ+ group. It participated in the Montreal Pride Parade last year. Ga\u2019ava and its partner organization, the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), said they were informed on July 31 that they were banned from attending the parade on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Explaining the decision, but without mentioning the name of either group, festival organizers\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/fiertemontreal.com\/en\/news\/fierte-montreal-precise-sa-position-sur-le-conflit-israelo-palestinien\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0they received complaints about statements made by the organizations that were perceived as \u201chateful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cTo ensure that the Fiert\u00e9 Montr\u00e9al Festival remains a safe and celebratory space for everyone, the Board of Directors of Fiert\u00e9 Montr\u00e9al has made the decision to deny participation in the Pride Parade to organizations spreading hateful discourse,\u201d they explained. \u201cThis measure is taken in the context of a complex geopolitical situation and stems from our commitment to preserving the emotional and physical safety of our communities. We refuse to allow the spaces of the Fiert\u00e9 Montr\u00e9al to be instrumentalized in the context of a conflict that involves major violations of fundamental human rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the same statement, festival organizers condemned what they claimed is \u201cgenocide\u201d taking place in the Gaza Strip. They also expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people \u201cand their opposition to genocide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ga\u2019ava said Montreal Pride representatives received anonymous complaints by people who accused the Jewish group of making hateful comments during\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/thecjn.ca\/news\/montreal-jews-to-celebrate-pride-despite-efforts-to-block-zionists-from-participating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an interview<\/a>\u00a0about attempts to exclude pro-Israel groups from the annual pride parade. Ga\u2019ava said \u201cthe terms \u2018pro-terror\u2019 or \u2018pro-Hamas,\u2019 which [Ga\u2019ava] are accused of using, may offend those who have supported or celebrated terrorism, but they do not constitute hate speech.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Carlos A. Godoy L., who has been the volunteer president of Ga\u2019ava for a decade,\u00a0<a class=\"nofancybox\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/1EMpkbMAFH\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0the \u201cdeeply discriminatory\u201d decision to initially exclude them from the parade was based on \u201cflimsy, politically motivated reasons decided behind closed doors under pressure from groups that hate Jews, deny Israel\u2019s existence, and whose members celebrated the atrocities of Oct. 7, 2023.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Eta Yudin, Quebec\u2019s CIJA vice president,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DMwJgpgxJCO\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cInstead of standing together against hate, antisemitism, and homophobia, Montreal Pride has chosen to align with those who fuel hatred, seek to divide our society, and attack the shared Quebec values with this antisemitic decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The parade\u2019s ban against the Jewish groups resulted in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Arturmaks\/status\/1951336021712576759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resignations of a festival committee member<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 who called the decision \u201cdiscriminatory and indefensible\u201d \u2014 and its chairman of the board. An executive director of the festival took leave because of the decision, according to The Canadian Jewish News. The decision was additionally\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PascalBerube\/status\/1951368296185344160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned by several Canadian politicians,<\/a><u>\u00a0<\/u>including a group which penned\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AHousefather\/status\/1951399711484580276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter<\/a>\u00a0to festival organizers about the \u201cunacceptable\u201d move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Elisabeth Prass, the Quebec Liberal Party\u2019s only Jewish parliamentarian,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elisabethprass\/status\/1950986595546374517\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cNo discrimination of any kind should take place during an event meant to promote diversity and inclusion. Antisemitism has no place in the face of acceptance of Jewish members of the LGBTQ+ community.\u201d Quebec\u2019s Minister of International Relations Martine Biron\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/M_Biron\/status\/1951411384299745718\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a>\u00a0the move \u201d counterproductive to the mission of inclusion of Montreal Pride.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Tuesday, Fiert\u00e9 Montr\u00e9al Festival organizers acknowledged that their actions were \u201cperceived by the Jewish community in Qu\u00e9bec (and especially by Jewish members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community) as a way to exclude them from its events.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-is=\"component-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis does not reflect the inclusive values that guide Fiert\u00e9 Montr\u00e9al\u2019s actions,\u201d they added. \u201cThe organization is committed to improving its internal complaint management processes to ensure that a situation like this one does not happen again and that no communities feel left out from its future festivities. The organization has reached out to representatives of the Jewish community, including CIJA, to clarify the situation and to ensure a space that is inclusive and safe for everyone, especially for Jewish members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who wish to take part in the Parade.
