<\/a>US-France Tensions Rise Over Antisemitism as New Data Shows Sharp Increase in French Attacks<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nAilin Vilches Arguello<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n As Washington presses Paris over its handling of antisemitism, new data shows anti-Jewish hate crimes in France remain far above pre\u2013Oct. 7, 2023, levels nearly two years after the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n On Monday, the French Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador Charles Kushner after he accused Paris of failing to act decisively against\u00a0rising antisemitism targeting France\u2019s Jewish community<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n In a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, Kushner voiced his \u201cdeep concern over the dramatic rise of antisemitism in France\u201d and criticized the French government for its \u201clack of sufficient action\u201d to confront it.<\/span><\/p>\n However, French authorities rejected such claims as \u201cunacceptable\u201d and warned that Kushner\u2019s letter violated international law.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe rise in antisemitic acts in France since Oct. 7, 2023, is a reality that we deplore and to which the French authorities are responding with total commitment, as these acts are completely unacceptable,\u201d the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n Aurore Berg\u00e9, France\u2019s minister for combating discrimination, stood by the government\u2019s efforts to protect its citizens, saying its fight against antisemitism is \u201cunequivocal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis matter is far too serious. In my view, it is too important to be handled through the courts in a diplomatic context,\u201d she said in an interview with Europe 1-CNews.<\/span><\/p>\n France\u2019s Jewish community has faced a\u00a0troubling surge in antisemitic incidents and anti-Israel sentiment<\/a>\u00a0since the Oct. 7 atrocities. Jewish leaders have consistently called on authorities to take swift action against the rising wave of targeted attacks and anti-Jewish hate crimes they continue to face.<\/span><\/p>\n This latest diplomatic row comes as new figures from the French Interior Ministry show 646 antisemitic incidents were recorded from January to June this year \u2014 a drop from the previous year\u2019s first-half record high but a 112.5 percent increase compared with the same period in 2023, when 304 incidents were reported.<\/span><\/p>\n The wave of anti-Jewish hatred has continued unabated.<\/span><\/p>\n Earlier this month, for example,\u00a0an olive tree planted in memory of Ilan Halimi<\/a>, a young French Jewish man who was tortured to death in 2006, was vandalized and cut down in one of the latest antisemitic acts to spark outrage within the local Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn France, we are no longer safe, neither alive nor dead,\u201d Halimi\u2019s sister, Anne-Laure Abitbol, told RTL on Monday, adding that public denunciations are no longer enough and urging concrete action.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI feel less safe in France,\u201d she said. \u201cBy recognizing a Palestinian state, Macron is encouraging antisemitism and failing to take action against antisemitic attacks in the country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Last month, Macron announced that\u00a0France will recognize a Palestinian state<\/a>\u00a0at the United Nations General Assembly in September as part of its \u201ccommitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Israeli officials have criticized the move, which was followed by several other Western countries, calling it a \u201creward for terrorism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion’68,<\/em> .
