Photo: REUTERS\/Kevin Lamarque<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Trump administration is reviewing and may block the visa applications of speakers scheduled to appear at the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/08\/19\/rashida-tlaib-set-speak-terrorist-connected-conference-second-consecutive-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People\u2019s Conference for Palestine<\/a>\u00a0in Detroit, Michigan later this week over links to terrorism,\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0has learned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A spokesperson for the US State Department told\u00a0<i>The Algemeiner\u00a0<\/i>that officials have \u201cnoted\u201d the gathering, set\u00a0to take place from Aug. 29-31, and will closely monitor visa applications for invited international speakers, citing a preponderance of \u201cterrorist sympathizers\u201d on the program\u2019s lineup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cGiven the public invite lists seems to include a number of terrorist sympathizers, we are going through and ensuring all international speakers slated to attend the conference are being placed on a \u2018look out\u2019 status for visa applications, so we are alerted if a request is submitted and can ensure they are appropriately processed,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn every case, we will take the time necessary to ensure an applicant does not pose a risk to the safety and security of the United States and that he or she has credibly established his or her eligibility for the visa sought, including that the applicant intends to engage in activities consistent with the terms of admission,\u201d the spokesperson added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The conference\u00a0will feature dozens of radical anti-Zionist activists, academics, artists, and political organizers, including US Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tlaib\u2019s appearance at last year\u2019s iteration of the People\u2019s Conference for Palestine<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/27\/inside-terrorist-connected-michigan-conference-where-rashida-tlaib-spoke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0sparked intense backlash<\/a>, with critics pointing out the event\u2019s connections to Wisam Rafeedie and Salah Salah, members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), an internationally designated terrorist organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The conference is convened by a coalition that includes the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/05\/20\/anti-israel-campus-groups-resourceful-finding-ways-harass-jewish-students-report-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palestinian Youth Movement<\/a>, Al-Awda: The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, and the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, among others. Several of these groups have maintained ties with PFLP, openly supported boycott efforts against Israel, and called for an arms embargo in the wake of Israel\u2019s military campaign against Hamas. The programming highlights sessions on \u201cDocumenting Genocide\u201d and \u201cBreaking the Siege,\u201d rhetoric that critics argue mischaracterizes Israel\u2019s actions as it seeks to defend itself against terrorist attacks following Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7, 2023, invasion of and massacre across southern Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Detroit gathering is expected to attract thousands of attendees, with dozens of speakers and activists scheduled to participate. Among the roster are well-known anti-Israel figures such as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/07\/31\/amazon-labor-union-along-with-linda-sarsour-accuses-israel-of-apartheid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linda Sarsour<\/a>, Miko Peled, and Chris Smalls. Sarsour has erroneously compared Zionism to \u201cwhite supremacy in America\u201d and accused Israel of perpetuating \u201cJewish supremacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Arabs comprise about 21 percent of Israel\u2019s population and include full rights of citizenship, including the ability to serve in parliament and on the Supreme Court as well as the ability to protest openly against the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The planned presence of several foreign terror sympathizers has sparked outrage among observers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Abed Abubaker, a self-described \u201creporter\u201d from Gaza, is expected to make a physical appearance at the Detroit conference. Abubaker has repeatedly praised the Hamas terrorist group as \u201cresistance fighters\u201d on social media and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/Detail\/2025\/01\/02\/740176\/Press-TV-Journalist-of-the-Year--Abubaker-Abed,-the-young-chronicler-of-Gaza%E2%80%99s-tragedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won a \u201cjournalist of the year\u201d award<\/a>\u00a0from Iran\u2019s state-controlled media outlet PressTV. In a January 2025 post, he showered praise on long-time Hamas leader and Oct. 7 mastermind Yahya Sinwar, saying that the terrorist\u2019s \u201clove of resistance and land is seen very clearly.\u201d In a March 2025 post, Abubaker posted that international supporters of the Palestinian cause should \u201cattack your governments.\u201d He also defended Hamas\u2019s murdering of dissidents, saying that the victims were \u201ccollaborating\u201d with Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Some of the speakers have been convicted and imprisoned in Israel for terrorist activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Omar Assaf, a former member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), and Lama Ghosheh, a Palestinian journalist from East Jerusalem, are scheduled to speak at the conference. Assaf spent eight years in jail for his role in the DFLP, which was previously a US-designated terrorist group, and Ghosheh received a three-year sentence from an Israeli court in 2023 for inciting violence and praising terrorism\u00a0in the West Bank and Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/05\/08\/freed-israeli-hostage-calls-pulitzer-board-revoke-prize-palestinian-writer-who-justified-hamas-abductions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mosab Abu Toha<\/a>, a Gaza-born writer, is also set to appear at the conference. Abu Toha\u2019s social media posts reveal he has denigrated the Israeli hostages held in Gaza, denied the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/02\/20\/saddest-day-yet-israel-mourns-slain-hostages-return-following-grotesque-hamas-ceremony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">murder of the Bibas children<\/a>, and spread fake news and antisemitic remarks. In other posts, he referred to Israeli soldiers as \u201ckillers\u201d and criticized international media for \u201chumaniz[ing]\u201d them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Perhaps most striking, Hussam Shaheen was slated to speak at the conference. He spent 27 years in prison for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder but was released earlier this year as part of a temporary Israel-Hamas ceasefire that saw Palestinian prisoners released in exchange for Israeli hostages. However, Shaheen\u2019s name no longer appears on the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/peoplesconferenceforpalestine.org\/program-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of speakers on the conference\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">US-based speakers also have extremist associations. Hatem Bazian, for example, co-founded Students for Justice in Palestine, a group that has become notorious for intimidating Jews on university campuses, as well as American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), a nonprofit he now chairs which has sponsored a series of anti-Israel protests following Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 terrorist attacks. Bazian works as a senior lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley. On Tuesday,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/08\/26\/uc-berkeley-professor-hatem-bazian-israel-wants-conquer-mecca-might-charge-admission-fee-egypts-pyramids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0reported on recent comments by Bazian<\/a>\u00a0in which he accused Jews of exploiting antisemitism to make money and claimed that Israel wants to conquer most of the Middle East, including Mecca and Medina, the holiest sites in Islam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The event will also host Mahmoud Khalil, one of the leaders of the anti-Israel encampment movement at Columbia University. Khalil rose to national prominence after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/03\/10\/ice-arrests-pro-hamas-activist-columbia-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detained him in March<\/a>\u00a0for what the Department of Homeland Security alleged to be leading \u201cactivities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.\u201d Khalil, who became a permanent US resident last year, was released from detention in June when a federal judge ordered his release. The activist also drew scrutiny last month after he\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/07\/22\/mahmoud-khalil-refuses-condemn-hamas-visits-high-profile-democrats-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refused to condemn<\/a>\u00a0Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 atrocities during a CNN interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since returning to the White House earlier this year, the Trump administration has launched an overhaul of the US visa system, part of what officials describe as an effort to root out individuals sympathetic to terrorism or those espousing antisemitic views.
