<\/a>Jewish Teen Assaulted in Lyon as France Faces Growing International Scrutiny Over Rising Antisemitism<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nAilin Vilches Arguello<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n French authorities have opened an investigation after a Jewish teenager was physically assaulted and subjected to antisemitic slurs while leaving a synagogue last week \u2014 among the latest in a\u00a0surge of anti-Jewish hate crimes<\/a>\u00a0that has shaken France\u2019s Jewish community since the start of the war in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n On Tuesday, the Lyon prosecutor\u2019s office announced it had opened an investigation for \u201caggravated violence against a minor on religious grounds\u201d following a complaint filed by the father of a Jewish teenager who was brutally assaulted while leaving a synagogue last Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the complaint, the 14-year-old boy was \u201cinsulted with antisemitic remarks\u201d and then beaten as he left the place of worship.<\/span><\/p>\n An unidentified man approached the victim, who was walking alone, and asked if he smoked. When the boy replied \u201cno,\u201d the man allegedly began hurling antisemitic insults before kicking him in the hip.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAntisemitism is a poison that has no place in our republic,\u201d Fabienne Buccio, prefect of the Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes region, said in a post on social media, adding that \u201cstate services are combating it with determination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF), the main representative body of French Jews, also condemned the attack and warned of an \u201cunprecedented wave of antisemitic acts\u201d in Lyon and its surrounding region, expressing concern over a \u201cpoisoned atmosphere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n This latest antisemitic incident comes amid\u00a0growing international scrutiny of the French government<\/a>\u00a0over the rising tide of antisemitism in the country and its efforts to safeguard the local Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n On Monday, the French Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador Charles Kushner after he\u00a0accused Paris of failing to act decisively<\/a>\u00a0against the rising antisemitism targeting France\u2019s Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n In a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, Kushner voiced his \u201cdeep concern over the dramatic rise of antisemitism in France\u201d and criticized the French government for its \u201clack of sufficient action\u201d to confront it.<\/span><\/p>\n However, French authorities rejected such claims as \u201cunacceptable\u201d and warned that Kushner\u2019s letter violated international law.<\/span><\/p>\n Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticized France\u2019s decision to summon Kushner, calling the move the \u201cheight of hypocrisy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cInstead of addressing the issue of the rising antisemitism in France in a substantive manner \u2014 France preaches against \u2018interference in the internal affairs of states.\u2019 The height of hypocrisy!\u201d the top Israeli diplomat said in a post on X.<\/span><\/p>\n Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also criticized Macron\u2019s efforts to protect the French Jewish community, demanding stronger government action against the surge in hate crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cYour call for a Palestinian state pours fuel on this antisemitic fire,\u201d Netanyahu wrote in his letter, referring to Macron\u2019s recent\u00a0announcement that France will recognize a Palestinian state<\/a>\u00a0at the UN General Assembly next month.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt is not diplomacy, it is appeasement. It rewards Hamas terror, hardens Hamas\u2019s refusal to free the hostages, emboldens those who menace French Jews,\u201d the Israeli leader continued.<\/span><\/p>\n However, Macron strongly rejected these claims, insisting that the fight against antisemitism should not be \u201cweaponized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cProtecting France\u2019s Jewish citizens from the rise in antisemitism has been an absolute priority of mine from day one,\u201d Macron wrote in a letter to Netanyahu.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe fight must not be the subject of manipulation amid a conflict in the Middle East that affects France\u2019s national cohesion and the security of its citizens,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n France\u2019s Jewish community has faced a\u00a0troubling surge in antisemitic incidents and anti-Israel sentiment<\/a>\u00a0since the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n Jewish leaders have consistently called on authorities to take swift action against the rising wave of targeted attacks and anti-Jewish hate crimes they continue to face.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the French Interior Ministry, 646 antisemitic incidents were recorded from January to June this year \u2014 a drop from the previous year\u2019s first-half record high but a 112.5 percent increase compared with the same period in 2023, when 304 incidents were reported.<\/span><\/p>\n Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion’68,<\/em> .
