<\/a>Spain\u2019s PM S\u00e1nchez Faces Backlash for Fueling Anti-Israel Hostility Amid Surge in Antisemitic Incidents<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nAilin Vilches Arguello<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez is facing backlash from his country\u2019s political leaders and Jewish community, who accuse him of fueling antisemitic hostility after\u00a0incidents at the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/a>\u00a0disrupted the prestigious cycling race.<\/span><\/p>\n Amid a sharp rise in anti-Jewish hate crimes and anti-Israel sentiment, Lorenzo Rodr\u00edguez, mayor of Castrillo Mota de Jud\u00edos in northern Spain, accused the country\u2019s leader of \u201cfueling a discourse of hatred\u201d against Israel and the Jewish people.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe government is fostering antisemitism that will prove deeply damaging for Spain,\u201d Rodr\u00edguez said in an interview with the local outlet\u00a0El Espa\u00f1ol<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cS\u00e1nchez\u2019s moves are less about serious foreign policy and more about deflecting attention from his trials and failures in governance,\u201d he continued. \u201cSpain isn\u2019t leading anything \u2014 it\u2019s merely whitewashing Hamas and other terrorist groups.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n On Sunday,\u00a0anti-Israel protests forced the finale of the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/a>\u00a0cycle race to be abandoned as police tried to quell demonstrations against the participation of an Israeli team.<\/span><\/p>\n In his interview, Rodr\u00edguez blamed S\u00e1nchez for fostering a hostile climate in Spain, saying the country is witnessing \u201chatred toward an entire people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n He also criticized the Spanish leader for failing to take a strong stand on other international crises, including those in Russia and Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe all recognize that the Palestinian people are suffering, but the solution cannot be to blame the Jewish people,\u201d Rodr\u00edguez said.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cPeople are afraid. There\u2019s growing concern because our town was recently targeted,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe are being singled out and threatened even though we have nothing to do with this war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Before the incidents on Sunday that led to the race\u2019s cancellation, S\u00e1nchez expressed \u201cadmiration for the Spanish people mobilizing for just causes like Palestine\u201d through their protests.<\/span><\/p>\n Madrid\u2019s Mayor Jos\u00e9 Luis Mart\u00ednez-Almeida strongly condemned S\u00e1nchez\u2019s statement, accusing him of encouraging hostility and fueling tensions.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe prime minister is directly responsible for this violence, as his statements this morning helped instigate the protests,\u201d Martinez-Almeida said after the race was canceled.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cToday is the saddest day since I took office as mayor of this great city,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n Santiago Abascal, leader of the far-right Vox party, also criticized S\u00e1nchez\u2019s remarks, accusing him of stoking division to maintain his hold on power.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe psychopath has taken his militias to the streets,\u201d Abascal wrote in a post on X. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t care about Gaza. He doesn\u2019t care about Spain. He doesn\u2019t care about anything. But he wants violence in the streets to maintain power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Shortly after the incidents, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) publicly denounced the violence, urging authorities to respond quickly and decisively.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cViolence and intimidation have no place in a democratic society and cannot be excused under the guise of freedom of expression,\u201d FCJE said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThese violent demonstrations fuel hatred and contribute to a concerning rise in antisemitism in Spain, which we have been warning about over the past two years,\u201d the statement read. \u201cIt is unacceptable that violence is justified on ideological grounds and hostility is directed toward the Jewish community\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Since the start of the war in Gaza, Spain has become\u00a0one of Israel\u2019s fiercest critics<\/a>, a stance that has only intensified in recent months, coinciding with a shocking rise in antisemitic incidents targeting the local Jewish community \u2014 from violent assaults and vandalism to protests and legal actions.<\/span><\/p>\n On Monday, S\u00e1nchez called for Israel to be barred from international sports events after pro-Palestinian activists disrupted the finale of the Vuelta cycling race in chaotic scenes in Madrid.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe sports organizations should ask whether it\u2019s ethical for Israel to continue participating in international competitions.
