<\/a>outh African President Says \u2018Boycotts Never Really Work\u2019 Despite BDS Support<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nAilin Vilches Arguello<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n South African President Cyril Ramaphosa insisted that \u201cboycott politics doesn\u2019t work\u201d following the Trump administration\u2019s announced absence from a summit in his country later this month \u2014 despite his ruling party\u2019s ongoing support for the\u00a0boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement<\/a>\u00a0against Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n On Wednesday, Ramaphosa urged US President Donald Trump to reconsider his decision to boycott the G20 Leaders\u2019 Summit, scheduled for Nov. 22-23 in Johannesburg, northeastern South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n Ramaphosa criticized Washington for \u201cgiving up the very important role that they should be playing as the biggest economy in the world\u201d in its decision to skip the summit \u2014 the first to be held in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt is unfortunate that the United States has decided not to attend the G20. All I can say in my experience in politics is that boycotts never really work. They have a very contradictory effect,\u201d the South African leader told reporters outside parliament in Cape Town.<\/span><\/p>\n Trump, who has\u00a0previously accused the South African government<\/a>\u00a0of human rights abuses against white minorities \u2014 including land seizures and killings \u2014 called the decision to host the G20 summit in the country a \u201ctotal disgrace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cNo US government official will attend [the summit] as long as these human rights abuses continue,\u201d he wrote in a post on Truth Social.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n However, the\u00a0South African government<\/a>\u00a0has strongly rejected any claims of genocide, saying such accusations are \u201cwidely discredited and unsupported by reliable evidence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Ramaphosa reaffirmed that the summit will proceed as scheduled, regardless of Washington\u2019s absence.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe G20 will go on. All other heads of state will be here, and in the end, we will take fundamental decisions. And their absence is their loss,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe US needs to think again whether boycott politics actually works, because in my experience, it doesn\u2019t work. It\u2019s better to be inside the tent rather than being outside the tent,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Despite such claims, Ramaphosa\u2019s ruling African National Congress (ANC) party has officially endorsed the BDS campaign against Israel for years.<\/span><\/p>\n The BDS movement seeks to isolate the Jewish state internationally as a step toward its eventual elimination. Leaders of the campaign have repeatedly stated their\u00a0goal is to destroy the world\u2019s only Jewish state<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2012, the ANC announced its full backing of the BDS movement, urging \u201call South Africans to support the programs and campaigns of the Palestinian civil society which seek to put pressure on Israel to engage with the Palestinian people to reach a just solution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Following\u00a0Ramaphosa\u2019s comments this week, it remains unclear why he continues to back anti-Israel boycotts if he believes they don\u2019t work.<\/span><\/p>\n Since the start of the war in Gaza, the South African government has been one of Israel\u2019s fiercest critics, actively confronting the Jewish state on the international stage.<\/span><\/p>\n Beyond its\u00a0open hostility toward Israel<\/a>, South Africa has actively supported Hamas, hosting officials from the Palestinian terrorist group and expressing solidarity with their \u201ccause.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In one instance, Ramaphosa led a crowd at an election rally in a chant of \u201cFrom the river to the sea, Palestine shall be free\u201d \u2014 a popular slogan among anti-Israel activists that has been widely interpreted as a genocidal call for the destruction of the Jewish state, which is located between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n Since December 2023, South Africa has also been pursuing its\u00a0case before the International Court of Justice\u00a0<\/a>accusing Israel of committing \u201cstate-led genocide\u201d\u00a0in its defensive war against Hamas in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n Israeli leaders have condemned the case as an \u201cobscene exploitation\u201d of the Genocide Convention, noting that the Jewish state is targeting terrorists who use civilians as human shields in its military campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion’68,<\/em> outh African President Says \u2018Boycotts Never Really Work\u2019 Despite BDS Support Ailin Vilches Arguello South Africa\u2019s President Cyril Ramaphosa attends the 20th East Asia Summit (EAS), as part of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Oct. 27, 2025.
