Credit: Sandro Halank via Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, shortly after declaring in a speech that Berlin must \u201cstand with Israel\u201d as part of a renewed \u201cWestern alliance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The call was \u201cgood and friendly\u201d and focused on \u201cdiplomatic and regional issues,\u201d the Prime Minister\u2019s Office said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Saturday, Merz referenced Israel in a speech to the Junge Union Deutschlands\u2014the youth wing of his Christian Democratic Union party\u2014in Rust, near Stuttgart in western Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe position of the Federal Republic of Germany must be clear, where we stand. In the Western alliance,\u201d Merz said, before pausing. He then added, \u201cAt Israel\u2019s side, dear friends. I have not forgotten that,\u201d as thunderous applause resounded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Successive German governments have described a commitment to Israel\u2019s security as a core principle of their foreign policy, rooted in the legacy of the Nazi regime\u2019s near annihilation of European Jewry.
