<\/a>German leader vows to \u2018stand with Israel\u2019 as part of Western alliance<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nCanaan Lidor<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, shortly after declaring in a speech that Berlin must \u201cstand with Israel\u201d as part of a renewed \u201cWestern alliance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The call was \u201cgood and friendly\u201d and focused on \u201cdiplomatic and regional issues,\u201d the Prime Minister\u2019s Office said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n On Saturday, Merz referenced Israel in a speech to the Junge Union Deutschlands\u2014the youth wing of his Christian Democratic Union party\u2014in Rust, near Stuttgart in western Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe position of the Federal Republic of Germany must be clear, where we stand. In the Western alliance,\u201d Merz said, before pausing. He then added, \u201cAt Israel\u2019s side, dear friends. I have not forgotten that,\u201d as thunderous applause resounded.<\/span><\/p>\n Successive German governments have described a commitment to Israel\u2019s security as a core principle of their foreign policy, rooted in the legacy of the Nazi regime\u2019s near annihilation of European Jewry. At the same time, Berlin has funneled millions of dollars to Palestinian and other organizations that critics say work to undermine Israel\u2019s legitimacy and oppose Jewish statehood.<\/span><\/p>\n Germany\u2019s government has adopted a friendlier posture toward Israel than many other European countries since Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, which prompted an Israeli retaliation that evolved into a regional war.<\/span><\/p>\n In June, Merz said Israel was \u201cdoing the world\u2019s dirty work\u201d by striking in Iran and targeting its nuclear program.<\/span><\/p>\n However, two months later, Merz\u00a0halted<\/a>\u00a0the export of \u201coffensive\u201d weapons to Israel after Netanyahu\u2019s Security Cabinet approved expanding the war against Hamas in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n Merz argued that Jerusalem\u2019s decision to intensify its military operations \u201cmakes it increasingly difficult\u201d for Berlin to pursue its \u201chighest priorities\u201d of securing a ceasefire.<\/span><\/p>\n A U.S.-brokered Israel-Hamas truce took effect on Oct. 10.<\/span><\/p>\n Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion’68,<\/em> German leader vows to \u2018stand with Israel\u2019 as part of Western alliance Canaan Lidor German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday.
