Photo: CAM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Outgoing New York City Mayor&nbsp;<span class=\"person-popover\" data-nid=\"90525\">Eric Adams&nbsp;<\/span>said on Sunday that Jewish New Yorkers should be worried about their safety and the prevalence of antisemitism in the city when&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/02\/27\/contender-in-nyc-mayoral-race-has-extensive-anti-israel-trackrecord\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayor-elect&nbsp;<\/a><span class=\"person-popover\" data-nid=\"1095815\">Zohran Mamdani takes<\/span>&nbsp;office in January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIf I were a Jewish New Yorker, I would be concerned about my children,\u201d he added. \u201cWhen it comes down to the energy that is brewing, there\u2019s a level of concern that I know I have. And we need to be honest about the moment, because people want to sugarcoat the moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mamdani, a far-left democratic socialist and anti-Zionist, is an&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/09\/nyc-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-defends-bds-support-vows-arrest-netanyahu-synagogue-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">avid supporter of boycotting all Israeli-tied entities<\/a>&nbsp;who has been widely accused of promoting antisemitic rhetoric. He has repeatedly accused Israel of \u201capartheid\u201d and \u201cgenocide\u201d; refused to recognize the country\u2019s right to exist as a Jewish state; and refused to explicitly condemn the phrase \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/07\/16\/mamdani-says-will-discourage-use-globalize-intifada-reaffirms-commitment-anti-israel-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">globalize the intifada<\/a>,\u201d which has been associated with calls for violence against Jews and Israelis worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mamdani was&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/11\/18\/car-ramming-stabbing-attack-west-bank-kills-one-injures-three\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elected as the new mayor of New York City<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this month, beating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Adams, who was running for reelection as an independent, pulled out of the mayoral race in late September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Leading members of the Jewish community in New York have&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/11\/05\/mamdani-victory-sends-chills-though-nyc-jewish-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed alarm about Mamdani\u2019s victory<\/a>, fearing what may come in a city already experiencing a surge in antisemitic hate crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) hosted a special gathering on Sunday in Tel Aviv\u2019s Dubnov Gallery to honor Adams\u2019 strong support for Israel and the Jewish communities in New York over the past four years, particularly after the Hamas-led terrorist attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and the global rise in antisemitism that followed. When it comes to confronting the rise in antisemitism, Adams was asked if he thinks anything has changed in New York over the last two years \u2013 following his famous&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=saUotFD6W6E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWe Are Not Alright\u201d speech<\/a>&nbsp;in the aftermath of Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 atrocities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cNo, we\u2019re not [alright],\u201d Adams replied. \u201cWe\u2019re far from being alright. We\u2019re going in the wrong direction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The outgoing mayor said that antisemitism is becoming \u201ccool and hip\u201d among younger generations due in large part to social media indoctrination, and organized efforts to normalize and spread anti-Israel and anti-Jewish false narratives. He called on Jewish organizations and their allies to formulate and carry out a \u201cwell-executed business plan\u201d to fight antisemitism. He also expressed concern that the incoming Mamdani administration will not push forward on efforts to unite the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI knew part of the role [as mayor] was to heal the city and bring us together, and there\u2019s more healing to do. And I\u2019m not confident that this incoming administration understands that,\u201d he explained. \u201cA lot of the work that we\u2019ve started on many areas, but particularly the area of healing and bringing our city together, I think we are going to lose some ground on that, and that sort of troubles me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Adams stressed that leaders must not stay silent about hatred, urging Mamdani to understand that \u201cbeing a mayor is both substantive and symbolic. They both go together. Your words can translate into the actions of others. Even if you disagree, you must be a leader for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe symbolism \u2026 There are things that we do to send a symbol that one is welcome. And he has failed to do that,\u201d Adams said. \u201cYou cannot be slow on defining that you do not embrace a \u2018globalize the Intifada.\u2019 The symbolism of being a leader is just as important as the substance. I think he must stand up and show that he can be a leader of the city with all of this diversity. Even if you don\u2019t agree or disagree, you must be a leader for everyone in the city because your words actually can translate into the actions of others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In his opening remarks at Sunday\u2019s event, CAM CEO Sacha Roytman highlighted Adams\u2019 longtime commitment to combating antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Adams created the first-of-its-kind&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/05\/13\/new-york-city-mayor-establishes-first-kind-office-combat-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mayor\u2019s office dedicated to combating antisemitism<\/a>; signed an&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/09\/new-york-city-mayor-signs-executive-order-adopting-ihra-definition-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive order<\/a>&nbsp;adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism; established the city\u2019s first Jewish Advisory Council; and launched the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/05\/19\/new-york-city-and-israel-sign-declaration-of-intent-for-new-council-to-foster-economic-business-partnerships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City-Israel Economic Council.<\/a>&nbsp;He participated in CAM\u2019s Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism in Athens, Greece, in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cYou stood before leaders from across the globe and said that mayors must act and must not allow antisemitism to rise in their cities,\u201d Roytman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAfter Oct. 7, when antisemitism surged, you were out in the streets standing with us,\u201d he continued, referring to Adams. \u201cYour famous words \u2014 \u2018We are not alright\u2019 \u2014 still echo in our minds, because that is exactly how we feel when we see antisemitism rising and when we see who New York elected as its next mayor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cYour voice brings people together \u2014 Jews and Muslims, African Americans, and so many others,\u201d Roytman added. \u201cThe friendship between Jews and the Black community is essential.
