Photo: REUTERS\/Khaled Abdullah<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel\u2019s potential partnership with Somaliland could be a \u201cgame changer,\u201d boosting the Jewish state\u2019s ability\u00a0to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/06\/houthi-leader-warns-israelis-those-who-want-sleep-comfortably-should-leave-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">counter the Yemen-based Houthi terrorist group\u00a0<\/a>while offering strategic and geographic advantages amid shifting regional power dynamics, experts assessed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), a prominent Israeli think tank, released a new report arguing that Somaliland\u2019s strategic position along the Red Sea, its closeness to Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, and its willingness to work with pro-Western states could make it a key ally for Israel, benefiting both nations amid rising regional volatility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Somaliland is an unrecognized state in the Horn of Africa, situated on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden and bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Ethiopia to the south and west, and Somalia to the east.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Unlike most other states in the region, Somaliland has relative security, regular elections, and a degree of political stability \u2014 qualities that could make it a valuable partner for international allies and a key player in regional cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cSomaliland\u2019s significance lies in its geostrategic location and in its willingness \u2014 as a stable, moderate, and reliable state in a volatile region \u2014 to work closely with Western countries,\u201d the INSS report said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cSomaliland\u2019s territory could serve as a forward base for multiple missions: intelligence monitoring of the Houthis and their armament efforts; logistical support for Yemen\u2019s legitimate government in its war against them; and a platform for direct operations against the Houthis,\u201d it continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Iran-backed terrorist group has been\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/03\/18\/yemens-houthis-wont-dial-down-under-us-pressure-iranian-appeals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waging an insurgency in Yemen<\/a>\u00a0for the past two decades in a bid to overthrow the Yemeni government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since 2014, the Houthis have controlled a significant portion of the country\u2019s northern territory and areas along the Red Sea, which they captured in the midst of a civil war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Yemeni terrorist group began severely disrupting global trade with attacks on shipping in the Red Sea corridor following the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct.7, 2023, arguing their aggression was a show of support for Palestinians in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, Houthi terrorists in Yemen have\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/23\/terrifying-israelis-recall-deafening-explosion-houthi-missile-strike-tel-aviv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regularly launched missiles and drone attacks targeting the Jewish state<\/a>. However, the Iran-backed group has stopped firing in recent weeks, amid the current ceasefire in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Houthi rebels \u2014 whose slogan is \u201cdeath to America, death to Israel, curse the Jews, and victory to Islam\u201d \u2014 said they would target all ships heading to Israeli ports, even if they did not pass through the Red Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the newly released study, Israel could gain multiple advantages from formal recognition of Somaliland, including a pro-Western partner with substantial mineral resources and a rare foothold of stability along the Red Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Beyond targeting Israel, the Houthis have threatened \u2014 and in some cases attacked \u2014 US and British ships, prompting both Western allies to carry out multiple retaliatory strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.
