REUTERS\/Marco Bello<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">US President Donald Trump said on Saturday the airspace above and surrounding<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela\u00a0<\/span>should be considered \u201cclosed in its entirety,\u201d but gave no further details as Washington ramps up pressure on President Nicolas Maduro\u2019s government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cTo all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0VENEZUELA\u00a0<\/span>TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY,\u201d Trump said in a Truth Social post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">US officials contacted by Reuters were surprised by Trump\u2019s announcement and unaware of any ongoing US military operations to enforce a closure of<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela<\/span>n airspace. The Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment and the White House did not provide any further explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Venezuela<\/span>\u2018s communications ministry, which handles all press inquiries for the government, did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Trump\u2019s post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">MASSIVE MILITARY BUILDUP IN CARIBBEAN<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">David Deptula, a retired lieutenant general who commanded a no-fly zone over northern Iraq in 1998 and 1999, said Trump\u2019s announcement raises more questions than it answers. Imposing a no-fly zone over<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela\u00a0<\/span>could require significant resources and planning, depending on the goals of the airspace closure, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe devil\u2019s in the details,\u201d Deptula said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Trump administration has been weighing<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela<\/span>-related options to combat what it has portrayed as Maduro\u2019s role in supplying illegal drugs that have killed Americans. The socialist<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela<\/span>n president has denied having any links to the illegal drug trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Reuters has reported that options under US consideration included attempting to overthrow Maduro, and that the US military is poised for a new phase of operations after a massive military buildup in the Caribbean and nearly three months of strikes on suspected drug boats off<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela<\/span>\u2018s coast. Trump has also authorized covert CIA operations in the South American country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Maduro, in power since 2013, has contended that Trump is seeking to oust him and that<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela<\/span>n citizens and the military will resist any such attempt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Trump told military service members earlier this week that the US would \u201cvery soon\u201d begin land operations to stop suspected<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela<\/span>n drug traffickers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The streets of Caracas were largely quiet on Saturday morning, though some people braved rain to go shopping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Maduro and high-ranking officials in his government, some combination of whom appear almost daily on state television, have decried US imperialism in their recent comments, but do not single out Trump by name, as the<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Venezuela<\/span>n government may be trying to de-escalate tensions, according to security and diplomatic sources.
