We will always stand by your side. Germany is an important friend, and I am convinced that the Chancellor\u2019s visit will contribute to the strengthening of the special relations between the countries,\u201d the minister continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Merz wrote on X Saturday night that \u201cthe ceasefire in Gaza is stabilizing. Now we must successfully move into the second phase. This means permanently removing the basis for Hamas\u2019s terror and ensuring that the precarious humanitarian situation of Gaza\u2019s civilian population improves quickly and noticeably.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hours before taking off to Israel, Merz spoke by phone on Saturday with Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas and urged him to implement \u201curgently necessary reforms\u201d in the P.A.,&nbsp;<em>AFP<\/em>&nbsp;reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The P.A. could \u201cplay a constructive role in a post-war order,\u201d German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius was cited as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Merz expressed support for the Trump administration\u2019s peace plan for the Mideast, welcoming what the German leader called the P.A.\u2019s \u201ccooperative attitude,\u201d&nbsp;<em>AFP&nbsp;<\/em>reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The chancellor added that Berlin still views a two-state solution as the ultimate path toward peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike, the government spokesperson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Merz&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/german-leader-vows-to-stand-with-israel-as-part-of-western-alliance\/\">spoke<\/a>&nbsp;with Netanyahu on Nov. 16, shortly after declaring in a speech that Berlin must \u201cstand with Israel\u201d as part of a renewed \u201cWestern alliance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A day earlier, Merz referenced Israel in a speech to the Junge Union Deutschlands\u2014the youth wing of his Christian Democratic Union party\u2014in Rust, near Stuttgart in western Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe position of the Federal Republic of Germany must be clear, where we stand. In the Western alliance,\u201d said Merz. \u201cAt Israel\u2019s side, dear friends. I have not forgotten that,\u201d he added, to thunderous applause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Successive German governments have described a commitment to Israel\u2019s security as a core principle of their foreign policy, rooted in the legacy of the Nazi regime\u2019s near annihilation of European Jewry.
