Photo.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Members of Congress gathered at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations resolution determining that Zionism is a form of racism and Daniel Patrick Moynihan\u2019s denunciation of that \u201cinfamous act.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) said that for the past 50 years, Israel has proven that Resolution 3379 \u201cwas not true.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis should be a time not to run and hide but to indeed prove that Zionism is not racism, and you can see it in modern-day Israel,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cHow many resolutions of any organization could be proven wrong for 50 years?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Led by a bloc of Arab states and communist countries, 72 countries passed the \u201cZionism is a form of racism\u201d resolution in 1975 with the support of many non-aligned countries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The resolution was repealed in 1991 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and to date, it is the only resolution ever repealed in the General Assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/me.jnsi.org\/uploads\/2025\/12\/UN7664614-1320x880.jpg\" width=\"100%\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>The United Nations General Assembly repealed a 1975 resolution that equated Zionism with \u201cracism,\u201d Dec. 16, 1991. Mariaschin, CEO of B\u2019nai B\u2019rith International, which hosted the Dec. 9 event, told JNS that despite the repeal of 3379, the United Nations and its agencies remain a hotbed of anti-Israel discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe more things change, the more they stay the same,\u201d Mariaschin said. \u201cAll we have to do is take a look at the record. Israel has never served on the Security Council of the United Nations. It\u2019s been a member of the U.N. since 1949.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWherever you look in the system, you have this inherent bias, and yes, these various agencies, and there are many agencies and many organizations inside the U.N. system that practice this kind of bias, and frankly, this kind of hatred,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The American ambassador to the United Nations in 1975, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, reacted to the passage of the resolution with fury in a speech that is widely celebrated as one of the greatest pieces of rhetoric ever delivered at the General Assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cA great evil has been loosed upon the world,\u201d the envoy said. \u201cThe General Assembly today grants symbolic amnesty\u2014and more\u2014to the murderers of the six million European Jews.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Gil Troy, a distinguished scholar in North American history at McGill University and author of \u201cMoynihan\u2019s Moment,\u201d a history of the speech, said that the future New York senator used blunter words to convey his support to Israel\u2019s U.N. Ambassador Chaim Herzog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHe stands up, straightens his tie, walks across the room, hugs Herzog and yells really loudly, \u2018f**k \u2019em,\u2019\u201d Troy said. \u201cHe later said, \u2018I uttered an Anglo-Saxonism not found in the Talmud.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Moynihan\u2019s condemnation of the resolution was almost immediately undercut by the Ford administration, when Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said in the days following the speech that \u201cwe have to keep the American reaction in some balance\u201d and that the United States should \u201cpay no attention\u201d to the vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Troy told JNS that the contrast between the two reactions was \u201cmind-blowing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThere\u2019s this tremendous ego clash between Moynihan and Kissinger, Harvard professors who are used to being the smartest guy in the room,\u201d Troy said. \u201cOn the day of Nov. 10, 1975, before Moynihan gives the speech, Kissinger turns to one of his WASPy State Department aides and says, \u2018Moynihan doesn\u2019t get it. We\u2019re running American foreign policy. This isn\u2019t a synagogue.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHere you have the Holocaust-survivor Jew making fun of the Irish-Catholic liberal Democrat,\u201d Troy told JNS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Troy said that Moynihan\u2019s legacy is having stood for both America\u2019s values as well as its interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe flow-through of a Moynihan is so important, because if the United States doesn\u2019t stand for core values, and it doesn\u2019t stand for democracy, it doesn\u2019t stand for principles, then what are we?\u201d Troy said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">All of the congressional speakers at the B\u2019nai B\u2019rith event on Tuesday were Republicans, including Reps. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.), Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Randy Fine (R-Fla.). Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) shared a letter of support, saying he was unable attend in-person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mariaschin told JNS that his organization is committed to ensuring that support for Israel remains bipartisan but that he is concerned about \u201csome erosion\u201d in Congress of support for the Jewish State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019m concerned about some of the language which is being used about Israel when you start talking about \u2018It\u2019s all about the Benjamins,\u201d he said, referring to a 2019 comment from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhen you talk about an apartheid state, when you start voting to embargo delivery of weapons to Israel in the middle of a war, there are serious issues here,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to address them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Some on the right have also begun to use \u201cZionist\u201d as an apparent slur, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.)&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMTG\/status\/1997726264300388476\">writing<\/a>&nbsp;on Sunday that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is a \u201cCanadian-born Zionist Texas senator.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt\u2019s moving in from both sides,\u201d Mariaschin said. \u201cAt the time when this resolution was adopted, there was universal opprobrium, pretty much from all sides of the spectrum.
