<\/a>Australia\u2019s \u2018Hanukkah Massacre\u2019 Is Worse Than You Think<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n Daniel Pomerantz<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Chabad\u2019s \u201cHanukkah by the Sea\u201d event near Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, turned into\u00a0a bloody massacre<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday: 15 murdered and dozens more injured, as of the latest update.<\/span><\/p>\n Far from being an isolated incident, this nightmarish display of terror is only the latest symptom of a dangerous and systematic attack\u00a0by the Australian government<\/em>\u00a0against its own Jewish population.<\/span><\/p>\n According to news sources<\/a>, the terrorists were Sajid and Naveed Akram: a father and son\u00a0of Pakistani origin<\/a>\u00a0who had pledged\u00a0allegiance to ISIS<\/a>\u00a0shortly before carrying out their antisemitic bloodbath.<\/span><\/p>\n In one rare bright spot, Ahmed Al Ahmed, an immigrant from Syria, heroically\u00a0risked his life<\/a>\u00a0to disarm one of the terrorists, likely saving many innocent lives in the process. Al Ahmed survived several gunshots and is recovering in hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n In the aftermath of this modern day pogrom, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese\u00a0issued a statement<\/a>\u00a0in which he made\u00a0no mention whatsoever<\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0Jews, antisemitism, Hanukkah, Islamic extremism,terrorism,\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0ISIS.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Albanese\u00a0referred to the massacre<\/a>\u00a0merely as \u201cshocking\u201d and \u201cdistressing,\u201d and said that his thoughts were with \u201cevery person affected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Within hours, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u00a0utterly excoriated Albanese<\/a>, accusing him of \u201cpouring fuel on this antisemitic fire,\u201d and noting that he had sent Albanese a letter last August, warning of the very conditions that had brought about this attack, a warning that had gone unheeded.<\/span><\/p>\n In tandem with the Israeli Prime Minister\u2019s vigorous public scolding, Albanese held\u00a0a press conference<\/a>, in which he finally\u00a0condemned<\/a>\u00a0the Bondi attack as antisemitic.<\/span><\/p>\n However, Albanese continued to avoid any mention of Islamic extremism, despite Australian law enforcement\u00a0having already publicly confirmed\u00a0<\/a>that the terrorists had pledged allegiance to the\u00a0Islamic State terror organization\u00a0(ISIS), and that they were carrying an ISIS flag in their vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n According to reports, the Mossad\u00a0had been warning Australia<\/a>\u00a0regularly for months about terror plots against the local Jewish community. Local police deny there were specific warnings about this particular attack, but Israeli leaders from all sides of the political spectrum countered that\u00a0Australia had ignored<\/a>\u00a0\u201ccountless warning signs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Australia\u2019s national failures are reminiscent of the Dutch pogrom of November 2024, in which local Muslim attackers violently hunted Israeli soccer fans through the streets of Amsterdam \u2014 after Dutch police\u00a0ignored urgent warnings<\/a>\u00a0from Israeli intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n The conditions for a similar massacre are currently shaping up in New York City, where the incoming mayor responded to a highly threatening antisemitic protest\u00a0by accusing<\/a>\u00a0the local Jewish community of \u201cviolations of international law.\u201d (I previously addressed both topics in depth at\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/a>).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n For the past two years since the October 7 massacre, not only has Australia seen a massive rise in\u00a0violent antisemitic attacks<\/a>, but local Jewish leaders\u00a0have consistently objected<\/a>\u00a0to the government\u2019s\u00a0permissive atmosphere toward attacking Jews, such as failing to apply appropriate penalties and needed protections.<\/span><\/p>\n Examples include frequent and\u00a0enormous marches<\/a>\u00a0calling to \u201cGlobalize the Intifada\u201d (a phrase that the United States Congress\u00a0officially recognizes<\/a>\u00a0as a call for violence against the Jewish people), public calls to \u201cgas the Jews,\u201d as well as Australia\u2019s\u00a0recognition of a Palestinian state<\/a>\u00a0last September, a move widely regarded in the Arab world as a\u00a0reward for the October 7 massacre<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Like most countries with free speech protections, Australia also has numerous federal and local\u00a0laws against incitement<\/a>, which authorities have routinely\u00a0failed and refused to enforce<\/a>\u00a0in protection of Australia\u2019s Jewish communities.<\/span><\/p>\n Prime Minister Albanese has promised to respond to the massacre by tightening Australia\u2019s gun laws. Ironically, Australia already has among the\u00a0strictest gun control regimes in the entire world<\/a>.
