Photo: Romain Costaseca \/ Hans Lucas via Reuters Connect<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An Algerian woman residing illegally in France was sentenced on Thursday to less than three years in prison&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/12\/08\/french-nanny-faces-trial-poisoning-jewish-family-case-stirring-outrage-rising-antisemitic-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for poisoning the food of the Jewish family<\/a>&nbsp;that employed her as a nanny, but was acquitted of antisemitism-aggravated charges \u2014 a ruling that has come amid renewed criticism of the French government\u2019s response to rising antisemitic incidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The 42-year-old nanny, who has worked as a live-in caregiver for a family with three children aged two, five, and seven since November 2023, was sentenced at the criminal court in Nanterre, just west of Paris, to two and a half years in prison for \u201cadministering a harmful substance that caused incapacitation for more than eight days,\u201d French media reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, the court declined to uphold antisemitism charges against the nanny, accused of poisoning the family by contaminating their food and drinks with toxic substances, noting that her incriminating statements were made several weeks after the incident and recorded by a police officer without a lawyer present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Solange Marle, the nanny\u2019s lawyer, praised the court\u2019s ruling as \u201csatisfactory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAntisemitism was not at all the motive behind this act. In this case, justice was applied independently, free from political or media influence,\u201d she told French media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For their part, the family\u2019s lawyers described the ruling as \u201cincomprehensible,\u201d insisting that \u201cjustice has not been served.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">They said the court failed to consider the full range of converging evidence \u2014 including the children\u2019s testimony, statements from third parties, the nanny\u2019s social media posts, and religious objects vandalized in the house \u2014 which, they claimed, showed the antisemitic motive behind the poisoning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The nanny, who has been living in France in violation of a deportation order issued in February 2024, was also convicted of using a forged document \u2014 a Belgian national identity card \u2014 and barred from entering France for five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">First reported by&nbsp;<i>Le Parisien<\/i>, the shocking incident occurred in January last year, just two months after the caregiver was hired, when the mother discovered cleaning products in the wine she drank and suffered severe eye pain from using makeup remover contaminated with a toxic substance, prompting her to call the police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After a series of forensic tests, investigators detected polyethylene glycol \u2014 a chemical commonly used in industrial and pharmaceutical products \u2014 along with other toxic substances in the food consumed by the family and their three children.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to court documents, these chemicals were described as \u201charmful, even corrosive, and capable of causing serious injuries to the digestive tract.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even though the nanny initially denied the charges against her, she later confessed to police that she had poured a soapy lotion into the family\u2019s food as a warning because \u201cthey were disrespecting her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThey have money and power, so I should never have worked for a Jewish woman \u2014 it only brought me trouble,\u201d the nanny told the police. \u201cI knew I could hurt them, but not enough to kill them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to her lawyer, the nanny later withdrew her confession, arguing that it offered no proof of an antisemitic motive and emphasizing that jealousy and a perceived financial grievance were the main factors behind the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The court\u2019s ruling comes as&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/08\/27\/jewish-teen-assaulted-lyon-france-faces-growing-international-scrutiny-rising-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international scrutiny of the French government continues to grow<\/a>&nbsp;over the rising tide of antisemitism in the country, with US and Israeli officials calling on French authorities to take stronger action to safeguard the local Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This week, US Ambassador Charles Kushner slammed the French government once again, accusing it of ignoring the surge in antisemitic incidents and warning that \u201cantisemitism has long scarred French life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe majority of Jews in France live in fear and they feel totally abandoned by their government,\u201d Kushner told&nbsp;<em>Time France<\/em>&nbsp;in an interview. \u201cFrance has lost its way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThere are so many incidents that we have kept track of and that happened in this country, and the government does absolutely nothing,\u201d he continued. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t feel welcomed here if I was scared to walk around with a yarmulke on my head, or scared to put a mezuzah on my door.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Earlier this year,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/08\/25\/us-france-tensions-rise-antisemitism-new-data-shows-sharp-increase-french-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the French Foreign Ministry summoned Kushner<\/a>&nbsp;after he accused Paris of failing to act decisively against the rising antisemitism targeting France\u2019s Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, Kushner had voiced his \u201cdeep concern over the dramatic rise of antisemitism in France\u201d and criticized the French government for its \u201clack of sufficient action\u201d to confront it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, French authorities rejected
