Photo: REUTERS\/Kylie Cooper<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Israeli government and leading US Jewish groups sharply criticized\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/01\/01\/mamdani-sworn-in-mayor-new-york-citys-jews-prepare-uncertain-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">newly inaugurated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a>\u00a0after he used his first day in office on Thursday to revoke a series of executive orders enacted by his predecessor to combat antisemitism, arguing the moves have weakened protections for Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Among the most controversial actions was Mamdani\u2019s decision to revoke New York City\u2019s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, a framework widely used by governments and law enforcement to identify contemporary antisemitic behavior, including some forms of anti-Zionist rhetoric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel\u2019s Foreign Ministry lambasted the move as an invitation for intensified bigotry against Jewish New Yorkers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">\u201cOn his very first day as New York City mayor,<\/span><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">\u00a0Mamdani shows his true face: He scraps the IHRA definition of antisemitism and lifts restrictions on boycotting Israel. This isn\u2019t leadership. It\u2019s antisemitic gasoline on an open fire,\u201d the ministry posted on social media on Friday.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">IHRA \u2014 an intergovernmental organization comprising dozens of countries including the US and Israel \u2014\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/09\/new-york-city-mayor-signs-executive-order-adopting-ihra-definition-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopted the \u201cworking definition\u201d of antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0in 2016. Since then, the definition has been widely accepted by Jewish groups and lawmakers across the political spectrum, and it is now used by hundreds of governing institutions, including the US State Department, European Union, and United Nations,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the definition, antisemitism \u201cis a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and\/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.\u201d It provides 11 specific, contemporary examples of antisemitism\u00a0in public life, the media, schools, the workplace, and in the religious sphere. Beyond classic antisemitic behavior associated with the likes of the medieval period and Nazi Germany, the examples include denial of the Holocaust and newer forms of antisemitism targeting Israel such as demonizing the Jewish state, denying its right to exist, and holding it to standards not expected of any other democratic state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The definition could have been problematic for Mamdani, a far-left democratic socialist and avowed anti-Zionist who has made anti-Israel activism a cornerstone of his political career and been widely accused of promoting antisemitic rhetoric. A\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/09\/nyc-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-defends-bds-support-vows-arrest-netanyahu-synagogue-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supporter of boycotting all entities tied to Israel<\/a>, he has repeatedly refused to recognize Israel\u2019s right to exist as a Jewish state; routinely accused Israel of \u201capartheid\u201d and \u201cgenocide\u201d; and refused to clearly condemn the phrase \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/07\/16\/mamdani-says-will-discourage-use-globalize-intifada-reaffirms-commitment-anti-israel-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">globalize the intifada<\/a>,\u201d which has been used to call for violence against Jews and Israelis worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Leading members of the Jewish community in New York have\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/11\/05\/mamdani-victory-sends-chills-though-nyc-jewish-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed alarm about Mamdani\u2019s electoral victory<\/a>, fearing what may come in a city already experiencing a surge in antisemitic hate crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Beyond the IHRA definition, Mamdani also nullified an order\u00a0that\u00a0opposed the campaign to boycott Israel. The boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement, which Mamdani openly supports, seeks to isolate Israel from the international community as a step toward its eventual elimination. Leaders of the movement have repeatedly stated\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/06\/19\/german-domestic-intelligence-agency-designates-bds-a-suspected-extremist-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their goal is to destroy the world\u2019s only Jewish state<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mamdani further revoked\u00a0a directive for the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to review protests near synagogues following contentious demonstrations outside Jewish institutions last year. However, a subsequent executive order from Mamdani included similar instructions to police. The new mayor also committed to continuing the work of the Mayor\u2019s Office to Combat Antisemitism, which was established last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In November, hundreds of people\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/11\/20\/columbia-university-student-groups-promote-targeting-nyc-synagogue-where-mob-chants-antisemitic-death-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amassed outside a prominent New York City synagogue<\/a>\u00a0and clamored for violence against Jews. Mamdani issued a statement which \u201cdiscouraged\u201d the extreme rhetoric used by the protesters but did not unequivocally condemn the harassment of Jews outside their own house of worship. Mamdani\u2019s office notably also criticized the synagogue, with his team describing the event inside as a \u201cviolation of international law.\u201d The protesters were harassing those attending an event being held by Nefesh B\u2019Nefesh, a Zionist organization that helps Jews immigrate to Israel, at Park East Synagogue in Manhattan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The rollbacks were part of a broader action by Mamdani to\u00a0revoke all executive orders issued by his predecessor, former Mayor Eric Adams, since Sept. 26, 2024, when Adams was indicted for corruption, charges of which have since been dismissed.\u00a0Mamdani\u2019s office has framed the move as an administrative reset rather than a targeted policy shift, saying the new mayor sought to begin his term with a clean slate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Leading Jewish groups, including the two main community organizations in New York, rebuked Mamdani for his first steps as mayor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMayor Mamdani pledged to build an inclusive New York and combat all forms of hate, including antisemitism. But when the new administration hit reset on many of Mayor Adams\u2019 executive orders, it reversed two significant protections against antisemitism: the city\u2019s adoption of IHRA and critical protections against the [BDS] movement against the State of Israel,\u201d the statement read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhile we welcome Mayor Mamdani\u2019s executive order seeking to better protect houses of worship, and his continuation of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/12\/31\/new-york-city-mayors-office-releases-antisemitism-report-jews-brace-mamdani-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Mayor\u2019s Office to Combat Antisemitism<\/a>, our community will be looking for clear and sustained leadership that demonstrates a serious commitment to confronting antisemitism and ensures that the powers of the mayor\u2019s office are used to promote safety and unity, not to advance divisive efforts such as BDS,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cSingling out Israel for sanctions is not the way to make Jewish New Yorkers feel included and safe, and will undermine any words to that effect. Bringing New Yorkers together and building broad coalitions will be foundational to the mayor\u2019s ability to advance a more inclusive New York.\u202f\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The statement was signed by the UJA-Federation of New York, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, the Anti-Defamation League\u2019s office covering New York and New Jersey, the American Jewish Committee\u2019s New York office, the New York Board of Rabbis, Agudath Israel of America, and the Orthodox Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Adams also criticized Mamdani\u2019s reversals, saying they dismantle safeguards put in place following a surge in antisemitic incidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201c@NYCMayor promised a New Era and unity today. This isn\u2019t new. And it isn\u2019t unity,\u201d Adams posted on social media. \u201cI\u2019ve been clear: I will be vocal in defending our Jewish brothers and sisters, just as they stood up for African Americans during the civil rights era.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">New York City is home to the world\u2019s largest Jewish population outside Israel, and its mayor traditionally plays an influential role in US\u2013Israel relations and global Jewish affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mamdani assumed office amid an alarming\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/01\/07\/majority-new-york-city-hate-crimes-targeted-jews-2024-new-data-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surge in antisemitic hate crimes across New York City<\/a>\u00a0over the last two years, following the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7, 2023, massacre across southern Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jews were targeted in the majority (54 percent) of all hate crimes perpetrated in New York City in 2024, according to data issued by the NYPD. A new report released on Wednesday by the Mayor\u2019s Office to Combat Antisemitism noted that figure rose to a staggering 62 percent in the first quarter of this year, despite Jewish New Yorkers comprising just 11 percent of the city\u2019s population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A Sienna Research Institute poll released in early November revealed that a whopping 72 percent of Jewish New Yorkers believe that Mamdani will be \u201cbad\u201d for the city. A mere 18 percent hold a favorable view of Mamdani.
