Photo: REUTERS\/Kylie Cooper<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Newly inaugurated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing backlash from a Jewish nonprofit organization for removing some social media posts about the city\u2019s fight against antisemitism from the official mayoral account on X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC) called it \u201ctone-deaf\u201d and \u201cshameful\u201d that Mamdani, 34, deleted two X posts that were uploaded by his predecessor Eric Adams\u2019 administration hours before the new mayor was sworn in and took over the account on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Wednesday morning, during his last day in office, Adams posted on<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rekatz\/status\/2006834524702032183\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0City Hall\u2019s official mayoral X account<\/a>\u00a0a thread of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rekatz\/status\/2006834524702032183\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three posts<\/a>\u00a0that discuss the city\u2019s \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/12\/31\/new-york-city-mayors-office-releases-antisemitism-report-jews-brace-mamdani-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first-ever municipal report<\/a>\u201d on efforts to combat antisemitism. Adams said the \u201cbold\u201d and \u201cdetailed\u201d report is a \u201cblueprint for 2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Thursday, after Mamdani took office and control of the account, two posts within the thread were removed and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCMayor\/status\/2006390520663462053?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a notice<\/a>\u00a0was written that said: \u201cThis Post was deleted by the Post author.\u201d The final post in the thread that was not deleted reads: \u201cThis administration put the tools into place to protect Jewish New Yorkers and fight hate. We\u2019re calling on every elected official to do the same.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A member of the far-left Democratic Socialists of America, Mamdani is the first Muslim to be New York City\u2019s mayor and the city\u2019s first mayor to be sworn in using a Quran. A\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/09\/nyc-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-defends-bds-support-vows-arrest-netanyahu-synagogue-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supporter of boycotting all entities tied to Israel<\/a>, he has repeatedly refused to recognize Israel\u2019s right to exist as a Jewish state; routinely accused Israel of \u201capartheid\u201d and \u201cgenocide\u201d; and refused to clearly condemn the phrase \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/07\/16\/mamdani-says-will-discourage-use-globalize-intifada-reaffirms-commitment-anti-israel-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">globalize the intifada<\/a>,\u201d which has been used to call for violence against Jews and Israelis worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt is difficult to overstate how disturbing it is that one of your very first acts as Mayor of New York City, on your very first day in office, was to delete official @NYCMayor tweets addressing the protection of Jewish New Yorkers,\u201d NJAC began by saying in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarkGoldfeder\/status\/2006888094184751395\/photo\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday that was addressed to Mamdani. The letter was shared on social media by the nonprofit organization\u2019s director Mark Goldfeder. It was sent to Mamdani, Department of Investigation Commissioner Jocelyn Strauber, and the Conflicts of Interest Board Executive Director Carolyn Miller, according to the Goldfeder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAt a moment of unprecedented antisemitic intimidation, violence, and exclusion in the city, the decision to erase official statements affirming the safety and protection of Jews is not merely tone-deaf, it is shameful,\u201d the letter further stated. \u201cIt sends a message, whether intended or not, that Jewish New Yorkers are uniquely underserving of continuity, clarity, or reassurance from their own government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"connatix-outstream-video\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The letter also noted that deleting posts from the mayoral X account without first preserving them in the City\u2019s official archive may violate both state law as well as the New York City Charter, since all social media posts from that account are considered part of official public record. The Jewish organization demanded that Mamdani \u201crestore or reissue\u201d a clear statement affirming the city\u2019s commitment to protecting Jewish New Yorkers \u201cnot as a favor, but as a fundamental obligation of office.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cEven if they were archived, the choice to delete statements specifically addressing Jewish safety on Day One invites scrutiny and erodes public trust,\u201d the letter explained. \u201cSelective removal of official statements concerning the protection of Jewish New Yorkers \u2013 particularly if comparable statements regarding other communities were retained \u2013 raises concerns of viewpoint discrimination and unequal treatment, and risks eroding constitutional norms that require government neutrality and equal concern for all protected groups.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cNew York City\u2019s mayoralty is an institution, not a social-media account to be curated for convenience or optics. The record matters, the law matters, and the safety and dignity of Jewish New Yorker\u2019s most certainly matter,\u201d the letter stated in conclusion. \u201cYour first days in office will define your administration. This is not how that definition should begin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mamdani spokesperson Dora Pekec told the\u00a0<em>New York Post<\/em>\u00a0the deleted posts are being archived and were not singled out because of their content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe mayor\u2019s team has begun archiving posts from the @NYCMAYOR account that were published by the previous administration, in chronological order,\u201d Pekec said in a statement. \u201cThis ongoing process is administrative in nature and is not based on the content of the posts. The mayor remains steadfast in his commitment to root out the scourge of antisemitism in our city and will deliver on his commitment to renewing the Mayor\u2019s Office to Combat Antisemitism and increasing funding for the Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes by 800 percent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hours after taking office, Mamdani formally revoked all executive orders issued by the previous administration since Sept. 26, 2024, when Adams was indicted for corruption, charges of which have since been dismissed. As part of Mamdani\u2019s move, he tossed out the city\u2019s adoption of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/06\/09\/new-york-city-mayor-signs-executive-order-adopting-ihra-definition-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism<\/a>.
